But before we single this enemy out, you should remember that, worry and envy, and jealousy, and hatred, and doubt, and fear are all states of mind which are fatal to taking action.

Talking about poverty as the richest experience that can come to a boy has a potential linkage to me in particular because, you could not say that I had no fair share out of it as a little boy.

Coming from the family of middle class parents (civil servants) in a country such as Nigeria which failed to recognize the devoted efforts of her citizens, I had rough time dealing with this fear called poverty.

Father having no shelter, finding himself in a one room apartment with a small veranda which he uses as his own bed-room while we five children sleeps with mama in a room. Due to congestion in that one room, we always find it difficult perceiving natural air and worst still, instead of enjoying our sleep like most kids supposed at that period of time, you will find us sweating profusely like pigs which lacked water in their pens.

In order to curtail the suffering we do undergo in such a small room, Papa devised a means that we should be sleeping at the edge of the corridor which is a passage for everybody living in the House.

I and my brother were apportioned to this position and anytime tenants pass the passage we instantly became their foot mat. The daughter of the landlord devised this as an opportunity to match on us each and every night.

Well, the reason for this my little excerpt is to inform you and bring to your understanding that, this writer as a boy have had fair share of ugly experiences brought about by poverty. But, one constant thing Papa always sought for is never to stay stagnant with this condition but to find a way to get out of it.

May be, this might be an experience you know not of! Yet I rejoice in the experience now, I mean! I envy every boy who is in that condition and is going through it.

Using a short story as always, about a Swedish gentleman, Years ago, group of socialists or co-operators as you may call them came together with a purpose of establishing themselves economically.

They purchased large acre of land and their idea was to work for themselves and pay no one, each person establishing himself at the kind of work that impresses him.

It did not take long, the Swedish gentleman joined them, and he was placed in printing department at his own request but, he complained he do not like the job. He was changed to the farm to operate the tractor; he could only withstand two days and immediately applied for transfer to the diary.

Now, the cow became his problem and was also changed to the laundry. He almost tried all the jobs and liked none and began to look like he did not fit-in the co-operation and will soon be dropped.

So, one of the members happened to think about only remaining job, that is wheeling bricks to the brick yards which he agreed upon and was doing the job with all enthusiasm.

Days went by and no complaint was registered, and when asked; he agreed he loved the job he was doing.

Just imagine any one preferring the job of wheeling bricks. Not too long, the bricks finished and he came to the co-operation manager and you could imagine what he said; “so I think I can go back to Swedish” and back to Sweden he went.

A man engaging in a work he loves so much poses no hardship for him to do more and even better work than that for which he is paid for and this is the reason why every man owe it to himself to find the type of work he likes and enjoys best.
