Spain defender Gerard Pique has revealed that he will retire from international football following the 2018 World Cup after growing "tired" of criticism.
The centre-back has long been a contentious figure in the Spain ranks due to his public backing of Catalan independence, as well as his part in perceived past squabbling between Barcelona and Real Madrid players.
Pique also came under fire from the press during Sunday's 2-0 win over Albania, with some claiming he had cut the regulation short-sleeved jersey in order to remove the trim on the shirts that bears the design of the Spanish flag.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart admits that he would have struggled to win his battle with Pep Guardiola if he had stayed at Manchester City.
Hart was sent out on loan to the Serie A club having fallen down the pecking order under the Catalan coach, who also signed Claudio Bravo from Barcelona.
And Hart, who signed for City in 2006, said he felt unlikely to be able to win back his spot had he stayed with the Premier League leaders.

Striker Mauro Icardi has signed a new contract at Inter that ties him to the Nerazzurri until 2021, the club have announced.
Argentina international Icardi's previous deal was due to expire in three years' time but Inter have been eager to prolong the captain's stay at San Siro.
The 23-year-old joined Inter from Sampdoria in 2013 and has scored 58 goals in 114 appearances in all competitions.

Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol believes Pep Guardiola has taken on his greatest challenge in the Manchester City job.

Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires believes Arsene Wenger will remain at the club beyond this season, despite strong links with the England job.
Wenger recently celebrated 20 years in charge at Arsenal, during which time he has won three Premier League titles and the FA Cup on six occasions.
The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of this season, though, with speculation continuing to mount that 2016-17 will be his last at Emirates Stadium.

Gohouri has been found dead in a river in
Germany. The 34-year-old, who played
defence for Wigan Athletic between 2010
and 2012, had been reported missing two
weeks ago. Ghouri attended his a
Christmas party on December 11 and was
due to travel to see his family in Paris.
When he failed to turn up his family filed a
missing persons report and a police appeal
for his whereabouts was issued. German
media confirmed today his body had been
found in the River Rhine, with no
indication of violence.

up in Paris. During his career he played for
teams in Israel, Switzerland and Germany
before joining Wigan in 2010.He was
