I will not say only APC but every Nigerian is guilty of this and until we reposition our mentality and desires, it will only get worse
All our leaders grew among us so it's an innate problem that require entire repositioning of our mental state and allegiance to national development

So should the Nigerian masses go and secure the borders themselves?

While I tend to agree with you that the masses contribute to the present situation we find ourselves, the buck eventually stops at the table of those in power.

If policies are not put in place by those elected to stop the rot, then you are calling for mob action.

Hmm...

When you tell people that removing subsidy is not an end in itself, they throw up blind arguments.

If as the government said that pms subsidies became unsustainable because of corrupt practices and rising costs, the commonsense thing to have done is check the corrupt practices and then address the issues that gave rise to the increasing costs.

How can you admit that people committed economic sabotage for years and then rather than get those people to pay for thier crimes against the masses, you leave the masses to thier fate because you are too cowardly to do the right thing?

Does bat think the economic saboteurs would just simply go away because he decided to run from them and instead suffer the masses? That cabal would simply evolve into another monster to continue to feed off the broken system, afterall, they are untouchable.

First address the factors that have made fuel subsidy unsustainable, then you can remove the subsidy. At that point, pms could come down to as low as N350- N400 per litre without subsidy, which is still bearable in our present economic state IF the N70k minimum wage is implemented across board.

Once pms crosses N400, reintroduce subsidies, at this point, government would be paying about N50-N75 subsidy. When prices drop, stop the subsidy.

To those saying smuggling because of high prices in other countries, I ask...

1. Why should Nigerians pay more for a product it has comparative advantage simply because the government is too incompetent to perform its duty of securing the nation's borders?

2. What stops fuel prices from going up in those countries as the price in Nigeria rises? So because fuel is N2000 in Cameroon, Nigerians must pay N2500 for something they can get at N500?

3. What happens when the much touted CNG is also adopted by neighbouring countries? So the prices would also rise due to smuggling?

Apc is just made up of senseless characters who are cunning and out for themselves only.

Actually economic liberalization must be imemented first, in the form of privatization & deregulation. When this is done, corruption will automatically be reduced, with no need for extreme measures.

Again, look at corruption in private universities vs government universities in Nigeria.

Those old enough to remember can tell the difference between NITEL and the private owned telecoms companies.

Also privatization & deregulation creates so much job opportunities and wealth that most people will have enough not to worry about how much the politicians are stealing.

Fighting corruption is a losing battle in a government dominated economy. It will never work, Nigeria has been fighting corruption since Jan 1966 and here we are.

Directly at the topic , what she said about replacing stock or goods in retail stores is what really got to me. The mechanics of inflation are inexorable. It's not just the prices, it also creates scarcity. Scarcity is terrible.

This is frightening. What is the solution for a small business like yours? It's important to price your goods and services appropriately. There's no kindness in business.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Private universities? Hope you know corruption is not just about stealing public funds?

Anyway, it is well.

I always insist that infrastructural projects are not necessarily signs of progress or development.

Any project that does not have a direct and lasting impact in improving purchasing power, reducing cost of living and improving security for generality of the masses is not a 'good' project.

That space for airport would have been better invested in farming or a massive solar/wind energy project. Things that have a direct correlation to improving living standards.

Very interesting video, really. I've talked to several people in Nigeria this past week and what I heard about the economy generally confirms her view of the situation.

Unfortunately this kind of suffering will continue as long as Nigerians refuse to embrace FREE MARKETS and the tenets of SAP reforms started in 1986....privatization of all sectors and industries and resources AND full deregulation of ALL prices, including labour, energy and forex AND lifting ALL bans, tariffs and restrictions on ALL imports & exports of legal goods and services. This is the FIRST STEP to making Nigeria a prosperous and developed nation.

The woman in the video seems to be a fairly well to do Nigerian. She should know living in Nigeria is still better than living in the UK.

https://www.nairaland.com/7738556/nigerians-uk-really-suffering

Good Luck to Nigeria.

No country in the world does all that you said.

As much as there is a need for extensive liberalisation of the economy, there first needs to be a sanitisation of the socio-political and economic system.

It is not as if corruption & insecurity can be eradicated totally, but it has to be reduced to such an extent that it becomes very difficult to get away with such acts and impossible to do so over a certain level.

Also, policies and reforms must be masses oriented or driven to benefit them the most economically. Political office holders must reduce excesses and also be subjected to the same policies.

Politics / A Government That Dupes Its Citizens by ivandragon: 7:46am On Sep 17
It was a rude shock to read the press statement by the NNPC that petrol (PMS) will sell at the pumps for between N950/litre and N1,012/litre, depending on the location.

While fuel will be sold for N950/litre in Lagos, the cheapest price, it will sell for as much as N1,012/litre in Borno State. In Delta and other South-South states, where crude oil is produced, PMS will also sell for N950/litre.

Let’s review the trend of activities leading to the current pricing of PMS, which makes it easy for citizens to conclude that the government is “yahooing” its own people.

On May 29, 2023, President Tinubu, exercising his God-given “Emilokan,” hurriedly declared that the fuel subsidy was gone, without reviewing the books to see if the subsidy being paid was even necessary. Worse, no measures were put in place to cushion the effect of the resulting price hike on the masses. This is where the yahooing started.

Upon the declaration that the “subsidy is gone,” PMS, which was selling for around N198/litre, skyrocketed to N650/litre, representing an increase of 228%.

To the ordinary citizen, this increase implies that the subsidy the government had been paying was N452/litre (the 228% increase).

Only God knows how the price of N650/litre was arrived at and how transparent the process was, considering that for almost a decade, NNPC has not paid subsidies to anyone but itself.

The citizens, with no choice, accepted this price and decided to live with it, believing that the fraudulent activities associated with subsidy payments had been eliminated. They thought they were making a sacrifice for the nation’s progress. Little did they know they were being yahooed.

From nowhere, the NNPC published an affidavit announcing a name change from “subsidy” to “shortfall” and claimed that the government had not been paying subsidies but had instructed them to fund the gap between the shortfall and landing cost. This change of name was a calculated move, as we will see.

If I may ask, what shortfall is there when citizens are already paying an additional N452/litre? Remember, only NNPC determines what constitutes the landing cost, making citizens vulnerable to being yahooed due to the opaque nature of NNPC transactions.

After the name change from subsidy to shortfall, NNPC declared massive profits as a private limited liability company wholly owned by the Federal Government. Gbam!!!

In less than a few months after this profit declaration, the same NNPC released a statement blaming PMS scarcity (which seems artificially induced) on its inability to meet obligations amounting to over $6 billion to its suppliers.

They then requested that the dividends due to the federal government, meant for the federation account, be used to settle these debts. This is why they changed the name from subsidy to shortfall in the first place. My fellow citizens, did you suspect yahoo?

Without consultation with other tiers of government or appropriation by the National Assembly (which seems unnecessary now because they must stand on his mandate), the federal government approved NNPC’s request to confiscate these dividends. What did you expect?

A palm fruit that falls into palm oil is home with its children. This shows NNPC is just a tool in the hands of the Federal Government, bent on duping its citizens.

Now let’s address the recent price increase of PMS from N650/litre to N950/litre. The justification was that they couldn’t continue to pay the shortfall in landing costs.

My fellow citizens, this is a fabricated lie. This was the point where they set the price for PMS from the Dangote Refinery.

They knew that releasing PMS from the Dangote Refinery would force prices below N650/litre, hence the recent price hike and artificial scarcity that drove prices as high as N1,200/litre to N1,500/litre, depending on the location.

This was done to justify selling PMS from Dangote Refinery at between N950/litre and over N1,000/litre, as proposed today.

It’s said that if you tell one lie, you need ten more to cover it. If NNPC claims that the recent price increase to N950/litre is due to the difference between landing cost and pump price, how come PMS from Dangote Refinery is sold at the same price? Is the Dangote Refinery in Malta?

Are they incurring tariffs, landing charges, clearing costs, demurrage, and other costs tied to inefficiencies in importing fuel? Do you still think we’re not being duped?

For you to know that the new PMS price from Dangote Refinery contains tax elements and is an attempt to further impoverish citizens, consider these questions:

Why is Dangote selling AGO (diesel) and other products to the market while selling PMS only to NNPC?

Why did the federal government stop Dangote Refinery from selling fuel since May 2024, even though it has been selling diesel and kerosene? If you didn’t know, there’s no way Dangote Refinery can refine diesel and other products without producing PMS as well. Stockpiling PMS since then would be wasteful, indicating the PMS being sold today was deliberately held back, awaiting the conclusion of the government’s duping strategy.
In a responsible government, rather than creating a monopsony for NNPC and allowing Dangote Refinery to enjoy a monopoly, the federal government would have pushed NNPC to quickly complete the turnaround maintenance of its three refineries to compete with Dangote Refinery and drive down PMS prices. Why hasn’t this been done?
If the process is transparent, why are NNPC and Dangote Refinery fighting over the price of PMS sold? NNPC claims they bought PMS at N893/litre, while Dangote says they sold it in dollars at a price “with a lot of savings” compared to current import prices.

Fellow citizens, it’s clear that there are tax elements in the PMS price from Dangote Refinery, which explains why the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service is involved in the so-called Presidential Technical Committee on the sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira.

The painful truth is that despite these multiple taxes, we don’t see any positive impact on the standard of living. On the contrary, the quality of life is declining daily, and they are still taxing us on PMS produced in Lekki.

It is parents that often cause problems such as these.

If the parents are responsible and do not buy smart phones for the kids that can be connected to the Internet, then kids would stay off social media.

The better thing is to get a tablet, download whatever educational materials the child needs then lock the internet connection feature until the next download.

Restrict time in front of television.

We can't always push around responsibilities when most of those responsibilities are ours in the first place.

DSS ‘Arrests’ Baze Varsity Lecturer Over #EndBadGovernance Protest

The Department of State Services (DSS) has been accused of arresting a University Lecturer, Dr. Abubakar Alkali, over his alleged support for the recent #EndBadGovernance protest, which rocked parts of the country in August.

LEADERSHIP reports that a 10-day nationwide anti-hunger and hardship protest, which later transmuted to #EndBadGovernance Movement, took place between August 1 and 10.

While the protesters were protected in some parts of the country, security operatives cracked down on them in other parts while many others were arrested and thereafter arraigned in court for various offences.

According to an Abuja-based lawyer, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, on Saturday, he said Dr. Alkali, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Petroleum & Gas Engineering at the Baze University in Abuja, was allegedly abducted by DSS operatives three weeks ago and taken to Sokoto State, for supporting the #EndBadGovernance protest.

“He has been in custody since then,” Adeyanju added in message sent to LEADERSHIP on Saturday night.

A text message sent to DSS hotline for confirmation was unanswered at press time as the Secret Police organisation has no official spokesperson currently.
