The Lagos State Government has mandated e-hailing operators to present their vehicles for inspection to enhance safety, improve service quality, and ensure regulatory compliance across the transportation sector.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.
Osiyemi stated that the ministry had observed the deplorable condition of some vehicles licensed to operate under e-hailing platforms within the state. “This has necessitated a comprehensive audit of all vehicles to be used,” he said.
According to Osiyemi, any vehicle found unsuitable will not be allowed to operate on Lagos roads. He decried the growing safety concerns for motorists and the poor service delivery by some operators, stressing that the state government was committed to safeguarding lives and property.
He added that the state would not tolerate practices that put its residents at risk. “The lack of robust databases among many e-hailing platforms makes it difficult to track discrepancies and criminal activities perpetrated through their services.
“The ministry will not hesitate to enforce sanctions where necessary,” he added. He quoted the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Olawale Musa, as saying that all drivers must be duly registered and certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute.
He urged operators to comply or risk having their licenses suspended. Musa noted that such practices of unregistered vehicles hinder effective tracking and pose significant security risks, which will not be tolerated According to him, the ministry will strictly enforce penalties for any infractions.
He said the digital system developed by the ministry requires up-to-date data to enable effective regulation of the transportation sector. He urged residents to stop booking e-hailing rides offline to avoid bypassing the safety features and accountability mechanisms built into the apps. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/08/lagos-orders-compulsory-inspection-of-e-hailing-vehicles/

Only a coalition can defeat Tinubu, and even this will be difficult. 7.With 8 years for the North after Tinubu (if he wins), Obi’s next realistic shot at President is 2038, when he’ll be 80 years old. 8.Before that, in 2031 after Tinubu’s tenure, Obi will most likely be offered VP under a Northern regime - taking us back to square one. Politics › Daniel Not Above The Law, Says Abiodun Amid Demolition Row by iwaeda(op): 12:12am On Aug 10, 2025 |
The Ogun State Government has advised a former governor of the state and senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the state, Gbenga Daniel, to stop crying foul and comply with lawful directives Kayode Akinmade, a spokesman for Governor Dapo Abiodun, stated this in response to the alleged plan to demolish Daniel’s Asoludero residence and Conference Hotel in the Sagamu Local Government Area of the state. The former governor had raised concerns over a plan by the state government to demolish his properties using the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, which he said were legally constructed before the law came into existence. He maintained that the move by the state government to demolish his private residence in Sagamu and Conference Hotels Limited, among others, was politically motivated and also a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law. However, the governor’s aide Akinmade declared that Daniel was not above the law. He explained that the former governor, like others who owned properties within that neighbourhood, were served with the notices. He said Daniel, rather than presenting his planning permit and land title to the relevant government agency for verification within the time specified in the notices, resorted to cheap blackmail. READ ALSO: Three-Time Minister, French Teacher, Other Facts About Audu Ogbeh Akinmade said, “The Ogun State Government is not engaged in any untoward move against Otunba Gbenga Daniel in any way. “The fact of the matter, quite simply, is that in his holistic approach to development efforts across the length and breadth of Ogun State, His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, has embarked not only on building new communities as exemplified by the affordable housing estates and the yellow roof revolution but also on the redevelopment of Ogun State’s towns and cities through urban renewal. This, he started with Ibara GRA in Abeokuta, the state capital, and is being extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode GRAs. “This initiative involves the auditing of existing developments within these areas to determine the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals and other commercial buildings. “This is a statutory and due process requirement that will provide information for any government intervention. And this informed the development audit exercise currently being carried out simultaneously in both Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu GRAs. “Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s building happens to be within the Sagamu GRA and among those that were served notices as required under the Town Planning Law and Regulation of Ogun State. Many other structures were also similarly served.” https://www.channelstv.com/2025/08/09/daniel-not-above-the-law-says-abiodun-amid-demolition-row/ |

Politics › 83 Million Nigerians Remain Poor, 10% Control 90% Of Nigeria’s Wealth — Oxfam by iwaeda(op): 11:26am On Aug 08, 2025 |
The Country Director of Oxfam in Nigeria, John Makina, has raised the alarm over the deepening inequality in Nigeria, saying it continues to favour a privileged few while keeping the majority trapped in poverty.
Mr Makina made the remarks in Abuja on Thursday at a policy dialogue titled ‘The Next 90%: Youth, Policy & A Fairer Nigeria’, according to a statement shared with PREMIUM TIMES. The event convened stakeholders from the Senate, key ministries, embassies, international organisations, and civil society groups.
Speaking at the event, Mr Makina lamented that inequality is starkly evident in the political marginalisation of young people.
He also spotlighted the continued marginalisation of women in governance, noting that only 4.2 per cent of elected officials in Nigeria’s National Assembly are female. This, he said, is despite women playing a dominant role in rural agriculture and still suffering from literacy gaps — with just 35 per cent female literacy compared to 59.5 per cent for men.
Tax revenue losses
Mr Makina further criticised Nigeria’s fiscal policy, revealing that in 2024, the country lost over N5 trillion to tax incentives granted to large corporations — an amount equivalent to 18.5 per cent of the federal budget.
He called for wide-ranging reforms, including wealth and excess profit taxes, stronger regulation of corporations, breaking monopolies, and investments in public services.
“To address youth challenges, we need progressive labour policies that promote decent work and fair pay. Raising the national minimum wage to reflect the real cost of living is a good start,” he said.
He noted that about 65 per cent of Nigeria’s workforce operates in the informal economy, and formalising these businesses through access to credit, training, and social protection could boost economic inclusion.
Reducing vulnerable employment, which affects 55 per cent of young Nigerians, Mr Makina said, is also vital. “Encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises through simplified registration, tax incentives, training, and credit support can help.”
Background
Nigeria’s economic and political inequalities have worsened over the past decade, despite promises of reform by successive governments. After two terms in office, the late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration ended in 2023, leaving behind a legacy marked by inflation, unemployment, and a growing debt crisis.
Though Nigeria saw modest post-COVID economic growth, millions slid deeper into poverty. Rising food prices, declining oil production, and heavy spending on fuel subsidies drained government finances.
In 2023, fiscal deficits surpassed 5 per cent of GDP, and actual revenues consistently fell short of projections, forcing more borrowing. The naira’s value plunged, and inflation remained in double digits.
Security challenges also escalated. In the North-east, Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks persisted. In the North-west, bandits and armed groups wreaked havoc. The South-east saw growing separatist unrest. Farmer-herder clashes in the Middle Belt further inflamed tensions.
Despite these, the political elite continued business as usual. Many anti-corruption efforts under Mr Buhari were accused of targeting only political opponents. Civic space shrank, with arrests of journalists and suppression of protests. Notably, Twitter (renamed X) was banned for seven months between 2021 and 2022.
In the 2023 elections, veteran politicians President Bola Tinubu (APC) and Atiku Abubakar (PDP) emerged as frontrunners, reinforcing fears of entrenched interests.
However, Peter Obi of the Labour Party gained momentum among disillusioned youths, especially in the southeast.
In a past statement in 2018, the former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had argued that Nigeria’s problems stem not from geographical restructuring but from poor resource management and corruption.
“Unless we deal with the fundamental issues — especially corruption — our economy will keep going one step forward, two steps back,” Mr Osinbajo said during a 2018 town hall in Minnesota.
He noted that under the Mr Buhari government, measures like the Treasury Single Account (TSA) helped reduce graft, and corruption proceeds were tied to infrastructure spending in the federal budget.
On agriculture, Mr Osinbajo, a professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the administration boosted rice production to reduce import dependency.
He also pointed to port reforms and efforts to improve Nigeria’s ranking in the World Bank’s ease of doing business index.
Despite progress in some sectors, Mr Makina raised questions regarding youth exclusion, women’s marginalisation, and corporate capture of public resources, which have continued to constrain Nigeria’s development. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/812761-83-million-nigerians-remain-poor-just-10-control-90-of-nigerias-wealth-oxfam.html

Two persons have been killed and three others abducted by armed men in Ganmu village, near Babanla, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The attack, it was gathered, occurred when the victims, who were travelling from Lagos to Babanla, suffered a flat tyre near the community.
While attempting to fix the fault, they were ambushed by five gunmen who opened fire on them.
The victims, who lost their lives in the attack were identified as Alhaji Abdulrazak Ewenla, a native of Ajia village, and Jimoh Audu from Ganmu.
The three abducted individuals have been named as Kazeem Ajide, Wahidi, and Mufutau, although the surnames of the latter two have not yet been confirmed.
Following the incident, a combined team of police operatives, military personnel, and local vigilantes were deployed to the scene to comb the area and restore order.
The state police command, in a statement by its spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on Thursday, confirmed the attack.
She, however, dismissed a viral video suggesting that residents had fled the village, creating the impression of a ghost town.
“Contrary to the misleading viral video, the area is not deserted. The security presence seen in the clip is a coordinated deployment to maintain public safety and aid the rescue effort,” the statement read in part.
The Command said it had launched a full investigation into the incident, with efforts ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims unharmed and bring the perpetrators to justice. https://dailytrust.com/gunmen-kill-2-travellers-abduct-3-in-kwara/

Politics › 2027: Jonathan Ready To Run Again, Close Ally Confirms by iwaeda(op): 7:40am On Aug 07, 2025 |
Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, will be one of the leading candidates to confront incumbent President Bola Tinubu, in the 2027 presidential poll, a close ally of the Bayelsa-born politician confirmed to Vanguard yesterday.
The ally, who is also in the People Democratic Party, PDP, as Jonathan, told Vanguard that the plan to draft the former President to contest on PDP’s platform had gone far, and that he had accepted, adding that the former president was going into the race to find ways of addressing Nigeria’s rising poverty, hardship and the general suffering that had gripped the citizenry in recent years.
The source said the project to bring back Jonathan to reposition Nigeria was being driven by key Nigerian leaders and elders, who believed the former president stabilised the country and its economy within the six years of his administration.
The source said it was in a bid to rescue the country and restore the dwindling economy and Nigeria to its pride of place that key PDP leaders and elders started ‘pleading with him’ to consider running against Tinubu in 2027.
There are those who believe that giving him the opportunity to run for a single term of four years remained the clearest pathway for power to return to the north in 2031 and remain there for eight years without a serious struggle by the south.
Going by the fact that Jonathan had already served out a term of four years, he cannot run for more than another four years in office if he wins the election in 2027, just like Tinubu if he gets re-elected.
Meeting with northern leaders Jonathan’s ally said the Otuoke-born politician had already met behind the scene with some top leaders within and outside the PDP to consult them and seek their support for the 2027 presidential race.
According to the politician, Jonathan met with former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, retd., last weekend in his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, and briefed him on his desire to run for one term in 2027.
Although the source did not say what General IBB’s response to Jonathan was, he, however, expressed optimism that the idea had been properly sold to the north.
The official also disclosed that Jonathan was currently in the South-South consulting and meeting with critical stakeholders, with a view to selling the project to them and soliciting their unflinching support.
It was, however, not clear at press time who the GEJ team was meeting with in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Tuesday and yesterday but it is believed that his support base in the region would not be a problem to him.
PDP intensifies effort to woo Jonathan Meanwhile, Vanguard gathered that the PDP is actively courting Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election under its platform.
Reliable sources informed the BBC Hausa Service monitored by our correspondent in Kaduna that the move, backed by top PDP figures, including some governors, was aimed at convincing Jonathan to return and lead the party’s charge against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Tinubu.
While confirming the development, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the party’s move was in response to growing calls from Nigerians who now believe Jonathan’s past administration was under-appreciated.
“Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in not re-electing Dr. Jonathan. They now acknowledge his achievements and are even apologising, pleading with him to return and rescue the country,” Abdullahi said.
He added that since Jonathan remained a PDP member, the party saw no reason not to approach him. “He is a compassionate leader, and as a party that listens to Nigerians, we felt compelled to heed their call,” he added.
Sources also revealed that some high-ranking PDP stakeholders recently travelled to The Gambia to meet with the former president and persuaded him to accept the party’s ticket.
Jonathan gives conditions According to Abdullahi, Jonathan has shown signs of interest and has begun laying down conditions, including clarity on whether he would participate in the primaries or be given the ticket outright, and whether the party genuinely recognises his capacity to lead.
“He has started listening to the emissaries and is consulting with his inner circle,” Abdullahi disclosed.
He may get automatic ticket
In an exclusive interview with Vanguard in Abuja yesterday, Daniel Woyengikuro, PDP’s National Financial Secretary, described Jonathan as the party’s national leader and a central figure in its strategy for zoning the presidency to the south.
“Is he not the best candidate for us at this moment? He is not just a former president; he is the leader of the party now. Aside from Obasanjo, the next person in line is him. Goodluck Jonathan is the national leader of this party,” Woyengikuro said.
He explained that the PDP was already consulting with Jonathan and engaging with his associates to encourage his return and deeper involvement in reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
“Nigeria has reached a point where we need to salvage this country. We need to salvage this country for our generation and for the generations ahead of us.
“The people who can do this, at least for now, are the leaders of the party, especially when we’re talking about the Southern presidency. Someone like Goodluck Jonathan is okay,” he added.
Asked whether the PDP would consider giving Jonathan an automatic ticket, Woyengikuro gave his full endorsement.
“For me, that’s what I firmly stand for. You can quote me anywhere: I want him to come. An automatic ticket for him, as it stands now. Because we must salvage both this party and the nation.
“If Goodluck finally accepts, you will see that the entire dynamics will change. The entire politics of 2027 will change,” he stated.
In addition to Jonathan, Woyengikuro praised Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, describing him as a dynamic leader capable of bridging generational gaps.
“We have Governor Seyi Makinde, a vibrant leader who is doing great things in Oyo. Now that we are talking about the Presidency remaining in the south, these are the two main individuals I stand for: Goodluck Jonathan and Seyi Makinde,” he said.
What the law says on Jonathan’s eligibility Amid the push to get Jonathan to run, there is division in the polity on his eligibility, following a 2018 Constitutional amendment that bars those sworn-in twice in the past from running for presidency or governorship.
The sections of the Constitution that address the issue of presidents and governors being sworn in more than twice are Sections 137(3) and 182(3). These sections state that a person who was sworn in to complete the term of another person as President or Governor shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term
*Section 137(3) applies to the President and states: “A person, who was sworn in to complete the term for which another person was elected as President, shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term.”
*Section 182(3) applies to Governors and states: “A person, who was sworn in to complete the term for which another person was elected as Governor, shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term.”
These sections aim to prevent individuals from serving more than eight years in office, either as President or Governor, even if they assume the role due to the incumbent’s inability to serve.
The amendment, now referred to as the Fourth Alteration Act, became effective on June 8, 2018, when it was signed into law by then President Muhammadu Buhari.
Currently, lawyers are divided on the issue. While some are of the view that Jonathan could no longer contest any presidential election, having completed the unexpired term of the late President Umar Yar’Adua and concluded another term in 2015, others contended that the new provisions cannot be applied to Jonathan who started his tenure before the law took effect.
In 2022, when the matter came up, a Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State held that Jonathan could not be barred by the amendment. Then, there were rumours that the former president would run and some supporters had procured the APC’s N100 million nomination and expression of interest forms but he declined to contest.
The position of lawyers supporting Jonathan’s eligibility was upheld in a judgment delivered on May 27, 2022, by a Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State by Justice Isa Hamma Dashen on a suit, marked: FHC/YNG/CS/86/2022 filed by Andy Solomon and Idibiye Abraham (who claimed to be members of the APC).
Defendants in the suit were Jonathan, the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Solomon and Abraham argued that by the provisions in Section 137(1)(b) and (3) of the constitution, Jonathan was no longer eligible to vie for the office of the president because he had taken an oath to that office on two previous occasions.
However, Justice Dashen held, among others, that Section 137(3) of the constitution did not bar Jonathan from contesting the 2023 presidential election because the provision could not be applied retroactively.
The judge held that the oath taken by Jonathan on May 6, 2010, after the death of President Yar’Adua, complied with a constitutional provision and not because he contested and won the election.
He noted that the 2007 general election produced the late Musa Yar’Adua as the President and not Jonathan, adding that Section 137(3) could not have a retroactive effect to stop him from contesting the 2023 presidential election.
The judge held that Section 137(3), which came into effect on June 8, 2018, “cannot apply retroactively, except the legislature, in clear terms, expressly stated their intention for it to be so.”
Lawyers divided over Jonathan’s eligibility Meanwhile, senior lawyers in the country yesterday weighed in on the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Their intervention followed a reported move by the PDP, to consider handing automatic ticket to the former President should he return to the party and become politically active again.
However, the said decision of the PDP threw up questions about Jonathan’s legal standing to vie for presidency again, in view of the fourth alteration to the 1999 Constitution, which forbade anyone from taking the presidential oath twice after election.
Reacting to the development, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr. Dayo Akinlaja, argued that former President Jonathan was not caught up by the said constitutional amendment. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/08/2027-jonathan-ready-to-run-again-close-ally-confirms/
