I Dominiccash360: Open letter to NAFDAC
Dear NAFDAC
The health of millions of Nigerians depends significantly on the effectiveness of our food safety system. There is growing public concern about the quality of food sold in our markets, particularly reports of fruits ripened with calcium carbide, grains preserved with hazardous chemicals, palm oil adulterated with dyes, and other unsafe food handling practices.
I respectfully urge NAFDAC to consider a more aggressive, emergency-style food safety response. One practical initiative would be to create a nationwide consumer food testing program where citizens can submit samples of fruits, vegetables, grains, oils, and other everyday food items for laboratory analysis it doesn’t have to be free. NAFDAC could then provide a report indicating whether harmful chemicals, pesticide residues, heavy metals, adulterants, or other contaminants are present above acceptable safety limits.
Such a program would:
Empower consumers to make informed decisions; Identify unsafe vendors and supply chains; Generate valuable national food safety data; Strengthen public confidence in NAFDAC; and Potentially reduce long-term health burdens associated with toxic food exposure.
Many Nigerians are increasingly worried that prolonged exposure to contaminated food may be contributing to rising cases of kidney disease, liver damage, and other chronic health conditions. A transparent testing system would help separate facts from rumors while protecting public health.
This initiative could also create opportunities for collaboration with the private sector. Accredited independent laboratories could be licensed to provide affordable food testing services under NAFDAC oversight, expanding access to testing across the country.
I hope NAFDAC will consider this proposal as part of a broader strategy to strengthen food surveillance and consumer protection in Nigeria.
Thank you for your service to the nation. |

Health › Re: How We Are Consuming Lot Of Carbohydrate Which Is Spiking Our Sugar Levels by Iwin2: 9:04am On Aug 08 |
DrAda: In a country with very poor food security, this may be targeted at the wrong audience.
Also, there is quite a bit of misinformation in this post, so I took the liberty of asking ChatGPT to address some of the claims, particularly within the context of our local environment.
1. “Beans is more carbohydrate than protein, therefore it isn't really a healthy source of protein.” — FALSE A food does not have to contain more protein than carbohydrate to qualify as a good protein source. Beans are widely recognised as an important plant-based protein source. They also provide complex carbohydrates, fibre, folate, iron, potassium and other nutrients.
2. “Beans contains little protein.” — MISLEADING Cooked beans typically provide about 7–9 g of protein per 100 g, depending on the variety. A normal serving can therefore contribute a meaningful amount of protein to the diet.
3. “Healthy proteins are found in eggs, fish and meats.” — INCORRECT Eggs, fish and meat are excellent sources of high-quality protein, but healthy protein is not limited to animal protein. Beans, lentils, peas, nuts and seeds are also recognised sources of healthy plant protein.
4. “Rice + beans = carbohydrate + carbohydrate with fibre and little protein.” — MISLEADING Rice and beans actually make a useful nutritional combination because their proteins complement each other. Legumes are relatively rich in lysine but lower in methionine, while cereals such as rice have the opposite pattern. Eating them together therefore improves the overall amino-acid profile of the meal.
5. “The ratio of beans should be higher than rice.” — THERE IS NO SUCH UNIVERSAL RULE There is no scientifically established beans-to-rice ratio that everyone should follow. Appropriate portions depend on age, energy requirements, activity level, nutritional status, health conditions and the overall diet.
6. “Rice has a high glycaemic index and digests very fast.” — OVERGENERALISATION The glycaemic index of rice varies considerably according to the type of rice, processing and method of preparation. Not every type of rice has the same glycaemic index, and eating rice as part of a mixed meal can also alter the glycaemic response.
7. “Garri has a high GI and breaks down carbohydrates very fast.” — OVERSIMPLIFIED The glycaemic response to garri can vary according to processing, preparation, quantity consumed and what it is eaten with. Glycaemic index should not simply be interpreted as how quickly a food “breaks down carbohydrates.”
8. “Carbohydrates are converted to glucose and can spike blood sugar, so carbohydrate intake should be limited.” — MISLEADING Conversion of digestible carbohydrate to glucose is normal physiology. Carbohydrates are an important source of energy. What matters is the type and quantity of carbohydrate, portion size, overall dietary pattern and the individual's metabolic health.
9. “Beans doesn't really spike sugar on its own; what you pair it with is the problem.” — NOT QUITE CORRECT Beans contain carbohydrates and therefore can raise blood glucose. However, because they contain fibre, resistant starch and protein and generally have a low glycaemic index, they tend to produce a slower and more gradual rise in blood glucose than many refined carbohydrate foods.
10. “The best pairing with beans is eggs, fish, meat, plantain, vegetables and fruits.” — NO SINGLE ‘BEST’ PAIRING EXISTS Beans can form part of many nutritionally balanced meals. Interestingly, plantain is also predominantly a carbohydrate food, so recommending beans with plantain while describing beans with rice as “carbohydrate + carbohydrate” is inconsistent.
Most importantly in the Nigerian context
In a country where food insecurity and affordability of animal-source foods are significant concerns, describing beans as containing “little protein” or suggesting that only eggs, fish and meat provide “healthy protein” is particularly problematic. Beans are an affordable, culturally acceptable and valuable source of plant protein, in addition to providing fibre, complex carbohydrates and important micronutrients.
The appropriate public-health message should therefore be dietary diversity, appropriate portions and balanced meals—not that beans are “not really a healthy source of protein.” Thanks for this detailed and well articulated information and englightenment |

I think if Alhaji Atiku is as bad as OBj want Nigerian to believe. Obj should have deployed all the arsenal available to him as the president of Nigeria to get Atiku arrested and taken to court. Obj controlled all security apparatus which could have been deployed to investigate him and charged him to court. Ribadu was the EFCC boss back then and was bidding obj interest. Why did Obj still allowed Atiku to complete 2nd term with him. They both ran the government for 8 years so how come Obj allowed Atiku personality to stay with him. Since 2007 and no government that took power after Obj ever convicted him of any wrong doing till date. Obj must be deeply pained for the failure of the 3rd term bid. Obj should go and rest. Atiku indeed has been very respectful for keeping quiet all thiswhile to respond to obj reckless attacks |

Why did Obj allowed Atiku to run government with him for 8 years if the allegations were true. Why didn't Obj use all the arsenal available as the president to take him to court |

emkz: Let us now discuss Atiku's records.
1. Atiku, can you clarify your relationship with Williams Jefferson, a former US congressman who was jailed over suspicious activities with you?
2. Atiku, is it true that you sold government assets to your cronies while you were vice president?
3. Atiku, is it true that you said you'd not make members of your family rich?
4. Atiku, did you say you'd make your friends rich because your friends are entitled to be rich?
5. Atiku, is it true that you were barred from the US and that you entered as Saraki's aide in 2019?
6. Atiku, did you pay $1.2 million to a lobbying firm owned by a certain Edward Ikemefuna Okeke, better known as Dr. Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten, to clean up your image? Why did you have to clean your image if it wasn't dirty?
7. Who dirtied your image?
8. Is it true that you wanted your former boss out of the way because you wanted his position? ----------- I love the questions you have raised for Atiku. But don't you think if those allegations were true Obj and Ribadu as the EFCC chair would have taken him to court? Did you think this government too wouldn't have taken him to court. |
Culture › Re: Top 10 Most Spoken Languages In Nigeria (2026) by Iwin2: 7:20pm On Jul 27 |
CalmluxPaint: This statistics is clearly faulty, especially with Pidgin English not being the number one most spoken language in Nigeria by a long mile.
All of the South-South, South East, North Central, South West, and a significant population of the North East and North West speak Pidgin English.
Let's not even talk about its influence on Afrobeats and the global acceptance of it. If we consider its number of speakers in Lagos, Kano, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa and Edo State alone, that's well over 50 million speakers.
There was a research earlier this year that ranked it amongst the top 5 spoken languages in Africa. ---------_-----_------------ You are absolutely current and correct *Earlier in 2025*, data compiled by _Visual Capitalist_ from _Ethnologue_ ranked *Nigerian Pidgin English as #1 most spoken language in Africa*, which also puts it well within the top 5. *What the research said:* - *Nigerian Pidgin: 121 million speakers* in 2025 - *Global rank: 14th* in the world - *Breakdown*: Only ∼5 million speak it as a first language, but ∼116 million use it as a second language - It *surpassed Egyptian Arabic, Hausa, and Swahili* to become Africa's most spoken language Other African languages on that same 2025 list: *Hausa* ranked 19th globally with 94 million speakers, *Swahili* had 87 million, and *Egyptian Arabic* had 119 million. *Why it grew so fast* The report linked it to rapid urbanisation, regional trade, and Nigerian pop culture — music and Nollywood films spreading it beyond Nigeria. Academics also call West African Pidgin the largest language cluster in West Africa, with 106–143 million speakers across 6 countries. *Note* It’s still considered an informal/"national" language. But as a spoken lingua franca, it’s now #1 on the continent. So yes, not just top 5 — it was ranked #1 in Africa for 2025. |
Politics › Re: Electricity: Tinubu Finally Copied My Power Sector Blueprint — Atiku by Iwin2: 5:14pm On Jul 27 |
seunmsg: This dude was Vice President for 8 years. Obasanjo gave him absolute power to manage the economy and instead of implementing whatever blueprint he's talking, he simply used his position as Chairman of National Privatization Council to buy over half of Nigeria's assets at very ridiculous prices. After selling the assets to him self, he also refused to pay the displaced workers their pension and severance benefits. Just last week, Tinubu just completed the payment of retirement benefits of PHCN staff.
Today, Atiku has the audacity to claim someone is copying his useless blueprint. What nonsense blueprint is he talking? Maybe he has forgotten but we will remind him. Tinubu as governor pioneered the the unbundling of the power sector. He was the first governor in Nigeria to to start an independent power project. That IPP initiative has been the template for all the reforms that are being done in the power sector. Funny enough, it was the same PDP government of Obasanjo and Atiku that frustrated the IPP initiative of Tinubu back then. Today, he wants to take credit for the reforms. ----------------------------- I am not against your preferred candidate but I make this post to correct what you said that wasn't true and correct that BAT paid ex phcn staff. No ex phcn ( disengaged) staff that have received any major payment from the federal government as part of their severance money since 2013 even after court ruling . Several petition have been written and numerous appeals from many well meaningful Nigerian have been prayed to this present government but no Favourable out come yet. The noise in the media about government settling ex phcn staff was a pastry sum for only a year increment arrears for a little above 3000 ex staff out of over 45000 staff laid off. |

Mattswaggz: https://saharareporters.com/2026/06/25/breaking-nigerian-soldiers-reject-fresh-move-deploy-repentant-terrorists-military It’s partly true — but the story splits into two claims that need to be separated: *1. What soldiers are saying* Soldiers told SaharaReporters: - They’re “uncomfortable” because past intel leaks compromised operations - Some claim recent deadly attacks were due to “repentant” terrorists leaking strategy to Boko Haram - Troops say they now sleep separately and don’t trust the ex-fighters So yes, _some frontline soldiers have voiced rejection/fear_ about working with reintegrated ex-insurgents. *2. What the military/Defence HQ says officially* Defence HQ and Operation Safe Corridor have repeatedly denied that ex-insurgents are recruited or deployed: - *Brig.-Gen. Yusuf Ali*, Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor: “At no point are participants armed, mobilised, or deployed for combat operations”. The programme is “non-kinetic” — deradicalisation + reintegration only. - DHQ: “Once you have any criminal record, you cannot join the military or any security agency”. - They say the viral video of “armed repentant terrorists” was not from their official camp in Mallam Sidi, Gombe, and some state-led DRR initiatives “operate independently”. *Bottom line* - *True*: Some soldiers have complained to media about a Borno govt move to attach reintegrated ex-Boko Haram to local security groups supporting operations. They fear sabotage. - Disputed/denied by DHQ*: The military says _Operation Safe Corridor_ does NOT arm or deploy ex-fighters with troops. They call the claims “false, misleading, and entirely unfounded”. So the “fresh move” soldiers reject appears to be a *state-level* attachment to vigilante/local security outfits, not formal recruitment into the Nigerian Army. DHQ insists no repentant terrorist is in the military or used in combat. |
