If it were to be overloading the lift door would not close, it will just keep giving a beeping sound till one person drops.
Also if one is stucked in an elevator, the last thing you want to do is panick, just relax, if possible sit on the floor but we Nigerians no go gree.
I am an elevator installer and I also do maintenance, I have been stucked in an elevator for like 30mins before, when they finally opened up the door, I was sitting down on the floor with my shirt off and playing game on my phone

Instead of talking about power failure, you say na overload and maintenance.

No power hence they became stuck in there., I have been in such situations too but for 10 minutes before power was restored, and it's not a place for an asthmatic to be in.

Exactly what I have been quoting people hear saying, most people are just talking because they do not have an idea on how elevators operate

I take the elevator everyday at work.

I or people using it have ever had reasons to complain.

1. An elevator MUST have an independent backup power for safety should there be general power outage.

The one at my office got three(3) layers of backup. You'd hardly realize power went out

2. It must be periodically maintained. Not just when it breaks down.
Mine is serviced twice(2) a month.

3. On busy days, a security personnel should be stationed close to ensure strict compliance with maximum allowed weights. At times, everyone wants to get on not minding the safety rules.

4. Use stairs occasionally for your health sake and to minimize the possibility of being trapped.

5. Choose the right floors and avoid rerouting during elevation. For instance, you're going to the 4th floor and you press 3 only to starts panic tapping 4 mid-elevation. That can jam or reconfigure settings.

Nigeria and Nigerians are not terrible or slow and backwards.

Some of these stuff can be avoided with proper orientation and strict compliance.

I'm really sorry to hear about this, one that lift you entered in your office needs to be changed or let them get a UPS, that will solve the power failure problem and by the way why didn't they put the generator on when the lights went off?
This is to show your building management do not have elevator maintenance team.
God forbid but if you were involved i a car accident but you came out safe, will you stop entering cars because of it?

Nigeria lifts is not a joke.

Imagine coming out from office in a normal day, then you enter lift to take you down, and you are sealed inside a metal box lift with no opening or escape route and no means of calling people outside because of network, then the lift malfunction and free falls from 10th floor and suspended at the 2nd floor and it begins to vibrate up and down, then the light was off and 30mins the place begins to get hot with limited air. When all hope is lost, power was restore and the lift pickup again......... That was my experience

I have to disagree with you here, from what I read up there that elevator became faulty when it was moving and it doesn't happen every time. For you to say if you are going up 10 floors or should use the stairs is wrong and I can tell you don't know much about elevators.
Most elevators in hotels, clubs, hospitals and even malls are backed up by UPS that ca continue functioning for more than 45mins when there is power failure and those that don't have UPS have what we call an ARD which is an Automatic Rescue Device that is connected with the controller so if there is a power outage the lift automatically takes you to the next floor and the door opens for you.
I can tell you that those people got sucked in that elevator because there was no lift operator in that hotel or even a maintenance man with little knowledge of lifts, if not there is a key provided t all clients that can open the doors manually and if the elevator is in between floors all they need to do is to switch off the power so the lift doesn't move when it comes on and open manually as put a chair in there and rescue them

Never EVER use an elevator when in Nigeria. If you must climb ten flights of stairs to reach an upper floor of any Nigerian building, do so and be glad that you won't suffocate in a tiny metal box in the highly likely event that the electrical grid power fails while that elevator is between floors.

If Papa God had intended Nigerians to operate elevators, the electrical power to ensure that those elevators don't trap and suffocate people would flow without interruption, which is clearly NOT the case.

I repeat, do NOT ever enter any metal box in ANY Nigerian building, if you value your life. If you are not physically fit enough to climb ten flights of stairs, then PLEASE just head back to your village and stay there to wait out the next 50 years patiently, in order to ensure that electricity supplies stabilize in Nigeria.
