Since they are unawre and are suddenly able to see things out of this world they will have an overload of information which will render them dumbfounded and overwhelmed hence they are erratic and stuck between 2 dimensions. So they can't behave like normal human who are restricted to 5 senses.

What the mental hospital do to correct this is to use electric shock to try and reset them
Now they use heavy sedatives not to cure them. But to make them act like normal person with 5 senses. That is the job of mental institutions.
