Culture › I Stumbled On Something Interesting Happening In Abuja’s Culture Scene by JadahIbrahim(op): 9:42am On Sep 14
I love to write about culture and community, and every once in a while you come across something that doesn’t feel like everything else out there. This is one of those.

Mangoed Third Spaces
It’s a Nigerian cultural community, based in Abuja, built around a fairly old-fashioned idea: that culture — film, music, fashion, politics, art, history, all of it — is meant to be sat with and talked through, not just consumed and scrolled past.

The name plays on the “third space” concept: not home, not work, but somewhere you go because of who you become there and who you meet there.
What struck me digging into it is how deliberately intellectual the whole thing is positioned.

This isn’t a party brand or a content page dressed up as a “community.” It draws from something they call veranda culture — that older Nigerian tradition of people sitting outside for hours, letting conversation wander from the mundane into the genuinely interesting, purely because the company made it worth it.

Mangoed is trying to bring that spirit back, just translated for a generation that gathers as much online as it does in person.
It started, from what I can tell, as a digital home for that kind of conversation — theories, commentary, debate, the kind of engagement that treats being a fan or a thinker as an active identity rather than a passive one.

From there it’s grown into occasional in-person gatherings: film and music events, themed experiences, and now history too, all curated rather than generic, each one built around something specific enough to actually be worth showing up for.

There’s clearly an appetite for this. A lot of the eccentric, art-loving, intellectually curious pockets of Nigerian culture have fewer places to exist right now, online or physically, and this feels like a genuine attempt to build one back.

Worth knowing about if this is your kind of thing
Their next project is called The Independence Files — an immersive Independence Day experience in Abuja that sounds unlike anything else I’ve seen locally around that date. From what’s been shared, guests work through a set of recreated historical documents in small teams, piecing together a fuller version of Nigeria’s road to independence than the version most of us got in school, guided by a live storyteller throughout.

It’s happening Sunday, October 4th, 2026, at Strobrié Cafe in Garki, with a small marketplace running alongside it.

If you’re the kind of person who misses rooms full of people who actually want to talk about things properly, this seems worth keeping an eye on.

Investment › Outsourcing Client Engagement: A New Approach To Real Estate by JadahIbrahim(op): 9:07am On Jan 20, 2025
The Nigerian real estate market is one of the most promising sectors for investment. With land being one of the most valuable assets, its appeal to individuals and businesses alike is undeniable. However, despite its potential, real estate in Nigeria remains fraught with challenges, from unclear documentation to fraudulent transactions and disputes over ownership.

For many, navigating the process of buying land or property can feel like entering uncharted territory. Questions around legitimacy, title verification, and secure payment processes often arise, leaving buyers hesitant to proceed.

This has sparked conversations about the need for a new, transparent approach to real estate in Nigeria—one that emphasizes trust, professionalism, and efficiency.

What Are the Challenges in Real Estate?

Buying land or property in Nigeria is not without its risks. Some of the most common challenges include:
1. Fraudulent Land Sales: Cases of multiple sales of the same land to different buyers remain a persistent issue.
2. Unclear Documentation: Many buyers struggle with verifying the authenticity of land titles and other legal documents.
3. Complex Processes: Negotiating terms, managing payments, and ensuring proper registration can be overwhelming for first-time buyers.

These challenges have highlighted the need for services that simplify real estate transactions and protect the interests of buyers and sellers alike.

Kawaakari Investments: A Case Study in Transparency and Innovation

One company working to redefine how real estate transactions are handled is Kawaakari Investments. Specializing in land sales and property transactions, Kawaakari Investments is built on the principles of trust, professionalism, and client satisfaction.

What This Means for Real Estate in Nigeria

The approach taken by companies like Kawaakari Investments signals a shift in the real estate sector. Buyers and sellers are beginning to prioritize professionalism and transparency, seeking out services that prioritize their interests and reduce the risks involved in transactions.

This new approach also emphasizes education—helping clients understand the importance of proper documentation, location analysis, and working with reputable professionals.

Why This Matters

As Nigeria’s population continues to grow, the demand for land and property will only increase. Ensuring that the real estate sector is accessible, secure, and efficient is critical for fostering confidence among investors.

The example of Kawaakari Investments shows that with the right structure and values, it is possible to build a business that not only succeeds but also addresses the pain points many people face in real estate.

Career › A Beacon Of Hope: Mark Faeren Hirekaan’s Award-winning Photo by JadahIbrahim(op): 8:04pm On Jan 18, 2025
When art meets purpose, stories that shape the world emerge. Mark Faeren Hirekaan’s photograph, “Solar Powered Light Source Promotes Safe Childbirth in Nigeria,” has earned him the prestigious 2024 Climatelinks Photo Contest award. This isn’t just a win for Mark—it’s a celebration of African talent, resilience, and innovation.

A Vision Illuminated

Taken in Kebbi State, Nigeria, the photo captures a deeply human moment: Aishat, a healthcare worker, providing antenatal care under the steady glow of a Solar Suitcase. This life-saving device, designed by We Care Solar, ensures consistent lighting for remote health facilities, creating safer environments for childbirth and maternal care in regions where electricity is unreliable.

Mark’s work goes beyond capturing beauty; it documents the solutions that drive progress. “Photography isn’t just about the present,” Mark explains. “It’s about preserving moments that inspire a better tomorrow. Through my lens, I tell stories of hope, resilience, and transformation.”

Championing African Talent

As a Nigerian photographer and storyteller, Mark’s journey is rooted in a commitment to showcasing Africa’s potential. His work with USAID’s Integrated Health Program has taken him to the heart of communities, documenting lives changed by impactful initiatives like the Solar Suitcase.

Mark’s art reminds us that Africa is not just a beneficiary of aid—it’s a hub of talent and innovation, leading the charge in solving global challenges like maternal mortality and energy poverty.

A Spotlight on Collaboration

At the heart of this achievement is collaboration. The Solar Suitcase, developed by We Care Solar, exemplifies how simple, clean energy solutions can save lives. By equipping healthcare facilities with reliable lighting, it empowers health workers, reduces maternal and neonatal deaths, and replaces unsafe energy sources.

Mark’s photo is a testament to the power of partnerships—between technology and humanity, global organizations and local communities—to create lasting change.

Storytelling for Impact

Winning the Climatelinks Photo Contest amplifies Mark’s mission to use photography as a tool for advocacy. His image serves as a reminder of what’s possible when talent, purpose, and innovation come together.

Through his lens, Mark not only captures moments—he inspires movements. This recognition solidifies his role as a voice for change, illuminating the path forward for a more equitable and sustainable world.

Education › How The Rich Young Ruler Organization Is Redefining Financial Education In Jos by JadahIbrahim(op): 4:12pm On Jan 12, 2025
When it comes to finances, many young people feel stuck, but The Rich Young Ruler Organization, led by Paul Terkator Hirekaan, is flipping the script. Through innovative programs and events like the Jos Finance Conference, this organization is helping young entrepreneurs and students take charge of their financial futures.

The Second Annual Jos Finance Conference, held on November 30, 2024, brought together over 700 attendees eager to learn about wealth creation, management, and growth. With free and subsidized training on digital skills, stock markets, blockchain, and Web3, participants walked away equipped with tools to navigate today’s financial world.

Earlier in the year, the organization also hosted the Unijos Finance Conference, where University of Jos students were taught practical ways to budget, save, and invest.

The conference featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including Paul Hirekaan, Emmanuel Odah (CEO of Precision Automation), and Christine Vihishima (The Money Mechanic), who shared actionable advice. Attendees didn’t just learn; they also built connections, creating opportunities for future collaborations.

With support from the One Stop Investment Center and the Ministry of Budget and Planning, it’s clear that this initiative is gaining traction beyond the event itself. The Rich Young Ruler Organization is proving that financial education can be practical, engaging, and life-changing.

If you missed this year’s conference, keep an eye out. This is just the beginning of a movement to reshape financial literacy in Jos and beyond!
