Politics / Ease Lockdown Or Expect Upsurge In Criminality – Niger Delta Agitator Tells Wike by James604: 3:12pm On May 08, 2020
PORT HARCOURT: A Niger Delta agitator, Mr. Precious Iyoyo, a.k.a, General Playboy, has urged the Governor of Rivers State to ease the total lockdown imposed in Port Harcourt, noting that the act would lead to an upsurge in criminal activities within the state.

Iyoyo who spoke in a telephone interview yesterday in Port Harcourt also regretted that the palliatives released by the government were only given to political party faithful, adding that ordinary residents of the state have not received any palliative either from the state or the Federal Government.

He said government is only rewarding political party members and those who are troublesome leaving out peaceful individuals and those who are not party members, noting that if nothing is done to support those who are peaceful that criminality might resume.

As part of pallitive measures to cushion the hardship commuters face due to the ban on the operation of commercial motorcyclists, popularly called ‘Achaba’ and the restriction on the limited number of persons in a Keke NAPEP, to curtail the spread of Coronavirus, the Bauchi state government has said it will purchase 500 Keke NAPEP tricycles in order to boost intra city movement.

The governor, Bala Mohammed said yesterday, that government will purchase 500 tricycles (KEKE NAPEP) for distribution to riders as alternative means of transportation.

The governor, while addressing stakeholders on the Covid-19 situation in the state, said that the tricycles will be given to the leaders of the unions for onward disbursement to riders as hire purchase.

The Kwara Butchers Association says it lost cows worth N20.5 million during the one-month lockdown in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lockdown was aimed at reducing COVID-19 spread.

Alhaji Lam AbdulRasaq, the Chairman of the Association, made the disclosure in llorin on Friday during an interview with the News Agency of NAN).

AbdulRasaq said many of the association’s cows died in transit due to fatigue and other challenges on the road, while some others slaughtered got spoilt because of lack of patronage.

According to the chairman, the N20.5 million loss was incurred by more than 1,000 members across the state’s 16 local government areas.

He, however, said that sales had improved with the gradual ease of the lockdown.

According to AbdulRasaq, butchers now sell off whatever number of cows slaughtered.

China said on Thursday it supports the World Health Organization (WHO) in trying to pinpoint the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and accused U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of telling one lie after another in his attacks on Beijing.

The virus has killed more than 255,000 people worldwide, including more than 70,000 in the United States, the worst-affected country, since it was first identified in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December.

Pompeo accused China of withholding virus samples he said were needed for global vaccine research, and he demanded transparency. Most experts believe COVID-19 originated in a market selling wildlife and jumped from animals to people, but Pompeo and U.S. President Donald Trump have said there is evidence it came from a laboratory, without elaborating.
