The Bayelsa state government said its public service reform has reduced its workforce from 55,000 to 27,000, after it expunged 28,000 ghost workers from the payroll. The Bayelsa Commissioner for Information, Mr Daniel Iworiso-Markson, stated this on Saturday. Iworiso-Markson was reacting to criticism by the Bayelsa chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) to the job cuts. He berated APC for criticising the reforms adding that the aim was to deal with payroll fraud and not to sack workers. An APC member of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, representing Brass 1 Constituency, Mr Israel Soni-Goli while receiving two members of the PDP led government noted that the government was not managing the reforms properly. The Bayelsa Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Ibarakumo Otobo and Mr Asari Mangeta, an aide to Gov. Seriake Dickson, had on Wednesday defected from the PDP to the APC. According to Iworiso-Markson, the APC only made a failed attempt to discredit the well intentioned and generally well received public sector reforms in Bayelsa. He said that media reports quoting the APC as having described the sack of 28,000 workers as regrettable only shows that the party and its followers are not abreast of developments in Bayelsa. https://globalsentinelng.com/2018/06/23/bayelsa-removes-28000-ghost-workers-from-payroll/ |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it termed Gestapo-style arrest of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South by the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) on Friday, saying it’s an attempt to weaken opposition. In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said the latest arrest is an attempt is mostly targeted at opposition members of the federal parliament. “The arrest has further confirmed our earlier alarm that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government has commenced a total clampdown on the opposition and perceived opponents of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid. “The PDP notes that the federal government has given no reasons for the arrest and detention of Senator Abaribe, who has been kept incommunicado without access to his lawyers and associates. “The party also notes the apprehension of Nigerians following numerous alleged plots by the federal government to frame up other lawmakers, including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, as well as Senators Dino Melaye and Shehu Sani. “Nigerians can now see that our dear nation is fast descending into a fascist state where constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech no longer obtains and citizens are marked, arrested and detained on the whims and caprices of those in power. The PDP which expressed fear over the safety of senator Abaribe charged the DSS to immediately declare Senator Abaribe’s whereabouts, as well as the charge against him. A pastor in Nigeria has urged his followers to pay him more than $2,000 to unleash a squadron of “prayer warriors” to help the country’s footballers secure a World Cup win. Earlier this week, self-styled prophet Tommy Yisa Aika said that the Super Eagles lost their opening match to Croatia because God was punishing them for hiring a white coach, Gernot Rohr. But he now says Nigeria can salvage the situation and become the first African team to win the tournament — as long as fans give him 750,000 naira ($2,092, 1,797 euros). “What I need is a token 750,000 (naira) to get some spiritual materials and also to give my prayer warriors as honorarium,” he said in a television interview, the Daily Post reported. Aika said his crack congregation was on standby and ready for action, “so that what has been destroyed can be readjusted to grant the Super Eagles divine favour all through the tournament”. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/06/against-iceland/ |

Five women working for a charity in remote eastern India were abducted and gang-raped at gunpoint, police said Friday, in the latest horrific sex assault in the country. The women said in their complaint they were performing a play to raise awareness about human trafficking in the largely tribal Khunti district of Jharkhand state on Tuesday when they were abducted. The assailants shot videos of the attack and threatened the women if they went to the police. The women worked for the non-governmental organisation Asha Kiran which is supported by a local Christian missionary group, police officer Rajesh Prasad said. “We have been questioning several people,” Prasad told AFP. Police have also rounded up some supporters of Pathalgadi, an anti-establishment self-rule movement popular in several tribal villages. Pathalgadi supporters resent outsiders and do not allow them to enter or settle in their area. Khunti is also a hotbed of Maoists, armed guerrillas who have been waging a decades-long insurgency mainly for land rights. Prasad said the women had undergone medical tests and that police were awaiting the results. India has been in the global spotlight since the 2012 gang-rape and murder of a woman on a New Delhi bus sparked angry protests. But the number of sex attacks has grown since then with some 39,000 rape cases reported nationally in 2016. Jharkhand has especially been in the spotlight after three teenagers were raped and burnt alive in separate incidents last month. The Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau said a re-election was for continuity because “Nigeria cannot get anybody better than President Buhari’’. For the Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the administration had delivered on all its promises and deserve a second term. “We promised Nigerians that we were going to fight insecurity, we fought insecurity; we promised Nigerians that we were going to revive the economy, we have revamped the economy. “We promised we were going to fight corruption, corruption today is a taboo in Nigeria,’’ Mohammed said. The Minister of Trade, and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah added that under the leadership of the President the citizens had changed the conversation in the country. According to him, we are now talking about the importance of security, fighting corruption and good economy “rather than saying corruption is not a problem, it is not different from stealing’’. The ministers had earlier taken turns to itemise the achievements of the administration including the expansion of the tax net and diversification of the economy to generate more funds for development. They also highlighted the achievements in infrastructure development in line with the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan to enhance job creation, trade and security in different parts of the country. “It is quite encouraging that all the things that the nation needs to do to go on the part of growth we are doing. “We are building, we are investing in our security, we have addressed the issue of tax, we have created the enabling environment by investments in infrastructure, which will allow people to take advantage of the government’s initiatives,’’ Adeosun said. Lai Mohammed noted that the country exited recession within two quarters while the country’s stock exchange had grown by more than 40 per cent in recent times. He added that 200,000 jobs were created though the N-power job creation scheme while the administration was feeding 8.2 million pupils in the school feeding programme. He said that the Social Investment Programme of the administration was second to none, adding that government had built 850 kilometers of roads while power generation had increased to 7,000 megawatts from 2,630 megawatts it inherited. Enelamah noted that under the present administration the country was having the same conversation and noted that it was important to continue on the trajectory of the progress being made to sustain it. The Rescue administration holds every single live as sacred hence cannot play politics with the lives of the very people who voted it into power. “While government is saddened by these attacks, we wish to reiterate that the government is not resting on its oars to find lasting solutions to these attacks. As a government, will never leave the citizens at the mercy of these attackers no matter the situation because it is our constitutional duty to ensure the safety of lives and well-being of the people. ” It is however, disheartening that while government is working round the clock to ensure adequate security of lives of the people, some people are bent on scoring very cheap political points and sowing seeds of discord among the peace-loving people by attributing the current security challenges especially the recent attacks to what they feel as action or inaction of the government. Any attempt to portray this government in bad light remains an exercise in futility. “As a government we are committed to ensuring a safe and secured environment that will guarantee peaceful coexistence among the various groups in the state as we remained resolute to the well-being of our people.” Source https://globalsentinelng.com/2018/06/21/4-killed-10-missing-in-fresh-plateau-attack/ |

The Defence Headquarters has said that there was no concrete evidence to support the claim that the Islamic State – ISIS was sending its members to Nigeria to train the Boko Haram terrorists. “It is pertinent to state categorically that there is no concrete evidence on the ground to back the claim,” Brig.-Gen. John Agim, the Acting Director Defence Information said on Wednesday in Abuja. Agim recalled that the Barnawi faction of Boko Haram terrorists in 2016 pledged alliance to the ISIS after troops dislodged them from Sambisa forest. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria is aware that there is collaboration between terrorist groups, thus, it is important to note that the activity of one group in a country influences other groups in other countries and because of this knowledge, activities of other terrorist groups usually affect our own military strategy. “The Nigeria military will continue to condemn all tactics by terrorist groups of isolating the Armed Forces of Nigeria, from any foreign collaboration,” Agim said. He assured that proactive measures were being taken to nip any such development (ISIS training terrorists in Nigeria) “if it exists in the bud”. The DDI assured Nigerians that the armed forces was capable of defending the country and its citizens from every attempt to infiltrate it by criminals. “Hence, the ill motivated stories, clips and their claims should be disregarded,” he said. The United Nations, UN has focused on the plight of the girls’ victims of sexual violence and abuse by Boko Haram terrorists as it celebrates International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflicts. UN has urged the Nigerian authorities to give more attention to protecting girls and children who were victims of sexual violence and abuse by the terrorists. Ms Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, stated this while briefing on the International Day. Under this year’s theme, “The Plight and Rights of Children Born of War,” the Day encourages solidarity with the survivors who have endured multiple ordeals, in the wake of sexual violence. A short video clip featured ‘Khadija’, who was kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists at Banki, Borno and impregnated, being tagged ‘Boko Haram wife’ and her baby, ‘Boko Haram son’ in the camp. Patten said she met with the victim girls and children born out of rape arising from the sexual violence and abuse when she travelled to Maiduguri in 2017. “I met with 200 young girls and there were 162 babies and I was really disturbed by the fact that these young girls and their babies were not only rejected by their families, by their communities but also by the very people they were living with inside the camp. “And my visit to Maiduguri made me realise that more attention needs to be given. I think the focus really has to be on the rights. NAN |
