vivo's Y30 series includes three smartphones - Y30, Y30 Standard Edition, and a Y30 for China. That number has now increased to four as the company just unveiled the vivo Y30g.

The vivo Y30g is built around a 6.51" HD+ LCD with a notch for the 8MP selfie camera. Around the back, we get a dual camera setup comprising 13MP primary and 2MP depth sensor units. The third circle above the flash isn't for a real camera.

Under the hood, the vivo Y30g has a Helio P65 SoC paired with 8GB RAM. The smartphone boots Android 11-based OriginOS and comes with 128GB storage. Although it also has a microSD card slot, which allows storage expansion by up to 1TB.

The rest of the vivo Y30g's features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 5,000 mAh battery that's charged through a microUSB port at up to 18W.

PhonesRealme 8 5G Gets FCC Certified by jarednld(op): 1:38pm On Mar 31, 2021
The Realme 8 5G bearing model designation RMX3241 bagged NBTC certification last week, and now it has been certified by FCC as well, moving it a step closer to the launch.

The FCC listing reveals that the Realme 8 5G will pack a 5,000 mAh battery and run Android 11-based Realme UI 2.0 out of the box like its 4G counterpart, but there will be some differences between them. For starters, the Realme 8 5G will be thicker (8.5mm) and heavier (185 grams) than the non-5G variant.
Moreover, the Realme 8 5G will feature a side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of an in-display solution like the 4G version. This means we could see the 5G model come with an LCD panel instead of AMOLED.

The US certifying authority also tells us that unlike the 4G version, the Realme 8 5G will come with an NFC chip onboard.

The rest of Realme 8 5G's specs are still unknown, but we'll surely hear more about the smartphone in the coming days.

Science/TechnologyHuawei Said To Be In Early-stage Talks To Sell Its Premium Smartphone Sub-brands by jarednld(op): 5:08pm On Jan 26, 2021
China's Huawei Technologies is in early-stage talks to sell its premium smartphone brands P and Mate, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said, a move that could see the company eventually exit from the high-end smartphone-making business.

The talks between the world's largest telecommunications equipment maker and a consortium led by Shanghai government-backed investment firms have been going on for months, the people said, declining to be identified as the discussions were confidential.

Huawei started to internally explore the possibility of selling the brands as early as last September, according to one of the sources. The two sources were not privy to the valuation placed on the brands by Huawei.

However, Huawei has yet to make a final decision on the sale and the talks might not conclude successfully, according to the two sources, as the company is still trying to manufacture at home its in-house designed high-end Kirin chips which power its smartphones.

"Huawei has learned there are unsubstantiated rumours circulating regarding the possible sale of our flagship smartphone brands," a Huawei spokesman said. "There is no merit to these rumours whatsoever. Huawei has no such plan."

The Shanghai government said it was not aware of the situation and declined to comment further.

The potential sale of Huawei's premium smartphone lines suggests the company has little hope that the new Biden administration will have a change of heart towards the supply chain restrictions placed on Huawei since May 2019, the two people said.

The Shanghai government-backed investment firms may form a consortium with Huawei's dealers to take over the P and Mate brands, according to the second person, a similar model to the Honor deal. Huawei is also likely to keep its existing P& Mate management team for the new entity, if the deal goes through, the two people said.

Huawei, the world's biggest telecoms equipment vendor and No.2 smartphone maker, last November announced the sale of its budget phone brand Honor to a consortium of 30 dealers led by a company backed by the Shenzhen government.

The second source said the all-cash sale fetched more than CNY 100 billion (roughly Rs. 1,12,560 crores). Honor declined to comment.

The Honor sale was aimed at keeping the budget brand alive, as sanctions slapped on Huawei by the United States had hampered the unit's supply chain and cut off the company's access to key hardware like chips and software such as Alphabet's Google Mobile Services.

Huawei may have a similar objective in pursuing the sale of the mobile brands. The two sources said that Huawei's latest plans for the two high-end brands were motivated by insufficient chip supplies.

Washington says that Huawei is a national security threat, which Huawei has repeatedly denied.

Science/TechnologyMicrosoft Is Making It Easier To Transfer Files From Outlook To Teams With Drag by jarednld(op): 5:02pm On Jan 26, 2021
Microsoft has added drag and drop support for transferring file attachments from Outlook to Teams. This feature will make it easier to move attachments between the two Microsoft productivity apps. It was first requested on the Microsoft forum back in 2016. The capability to drag and drop between the two apps is now available, allowing users to move files from Outlook to Teams with ease. Microsoft is also working on letting users on the free version of Teams use Calendar to schedule calls.

A Microsoft Teams administrator replied on the 2016 thread, confirming that users can now drag and drop attachments directly from Outlook to Teams. Until now, users had to first drag the files onto a location like the desktop, and drag them from there to the files tab in Teams.

The feature had started working in the Web client version of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome in February last year, when it was also marked as ‘partially done'. By October, the Microsoft Teams administrator had said that the feature was available on Teams Web client and was being tested directly from Outlook to Teams.

Besides that, the administrator has also shared that the ability for Microsoft Teams users on the free version to use Calendar was being tested internally. This feature would allow users to schedule conference calling using the calendar. This request was brought up in the forum in August 2018.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is increasing the upload file size limit of Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint to 250GB. While support for the same will start rolling out by the end of this month, general availability can be expected by the end of Q1 2021. Users will be able to share large files that may contain 8K or 4K videos, 3D models, large scientific dataset, research projects, and more.

Science/TechnologyZoom Update Brings Apple Silicon Support, Email And Calendar Apps May Be In The by jarednld(op): 1:15pm On Dec 24, 2020
Zoom has released a new update for Android and desktop users. The Android update comes with several new additions including a call-end tone that will be unique to all end calls – whether the call ended abruptly or if the caller knowingly ends the call. Desktop users get support for Apple Silicon processors as well. Furthermore, a new report claims that Zoom may be working on launching a new Email service and a calendar app to compete with the likes of Google and Microsoft.

Zoom for Android is receiving an update with version number 5.4.7. This update is available on Google Play Store and it brings along a new chime for all call ends, along with many other fixes and security enhancements. The update allows for contacts imported through the contact-integration process, to be added as a Zoom contact. Non-verbal feedback options are moved to the reactions button in the corner of the participants' video. The host will see each participant's reactions in the participant list, as well as the aggregate numbers of each reaction at the bottom of the list. Host and co-hosts can now also utilise the raise-hand feature along with the participants and webinar attendees. The Zoom for Android update further improves grouping of security options when scheduling.

Support for text messaging (SMS and MMS) for Zoom Phone Pro users has also been added.
Zoom for desktop also gets a similar update and it additionally brings along support for Apple Silicon processors. The macOS Zoom desktop client will better support computers with ARM CPUs, the changelog says. Most changes that have been introduced in the Android update have also been added for desktop users. The desktop update brings poll reports available during live session and improves grouping of security options when scheduling. There are some minor bug fixes and security improvements as well with this update.A new report from The Information suggests that Zoom may be working on expanding its portfolio and introducing new calendar and Email services. The Web Email service may go into testing as early as next year, while there's no timeline for the calendar app reported yet. Online video-conferencing reliance is likely to be reduced over the course of next year with the COVID-19 vaccine now being administered, and Zoom may be looking to add more products to its portfolio to stay relevant. The report adds that Zoom aims to build a full enterprise app suite to become a single-purpose platform for enterprise and regular users.
