Well, that's where most people learned about this, from a TV series. It was a novel that was turned into a mini-series.
In the story, a young bride who just had a baby with her Mpondomise husband found the snake (a cobra) while changing her baby's nappy. She got frightened & killed it in panic. As a result she became mad & committed suicide by drowning herself. That's why both the book & the mini-series are called Ingqumbo yeminyanya or The wrath of the ancestors. You won't go unpunished.

Is it like a spirit animal/totem for Igbo people?

In my tribe we have the Mpondomise clan & their spirit animal is a snake. When a baby is born, the snake pays a visit & it often hides itself inside the baby's blanket. Because of this one clan, people often accuse all of us of either having snakes hidden in our vjjs or that we're born with snakes, which is just ridiculous.
