Former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, whose record-setting boxing career, unprecedented flair for showmanship, and controversial stands made him one of the best-known figures of the 20th century, died on Friday aged 74, media reports said.

Family spokesman Bob Gunnell told NBC News that Ali died in a Phoenix-area hospital. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.

“My heart is deeply saddened yet both appreciative and relieved that the greatest is now resting in the greatest place,” boxer Roy Jones Jr. said on Twitter.
Ali was hospitalized this week for a respiratory ailment. The former prize fighter had long been suffering from Parkinson’s syndrome, which impaired his speech and made the once-graceful athlete almost a prisoner in his own body.

Ali proclaimed himself “the greatest” – as well as “the boldest, the prettiest, the most superior, most scientific, most skillfullest.”
Few could argue with him at his peak in the 1960s. With his dancing feet and quick fists, he could – as he put it – float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. He was the first person to win the heavyweight championship three times.

Ali became much more than a colorful and interesting athlete. He spoke boldly against racism in the ’60s, as well as the Vietnam War.
Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on Jan. 17, 1942, as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., a name shared with a 19th century slavery abolitionist. He later changed his name after his conversion to Islam.

Ali is survived by his wife, the former Lonnie Williams, who knew him when she was a child in Louisville, along with his nine children.

The Federal Government has scrapped post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, as a pre-condition to gaining admission into universities in the country.

The government and stakeholders in education sector also pegged 180 as the benchmark for 2016 admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to improve the quality of education in Nigeria.

These decisions were reached at the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria.

The Minister of Education , Malam Adamu Adamu,while declaring open the meeting, said since the federal government and stakeholders had confidence in the examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriulation Board, JAMB, there was no need for other examinations to be conducted by universities after JAMB exams.

He said: “As far as I am concerned, the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing, the universities should not be holding another examinations and if the universities have any complain against JAMB, let them bring it and then we address it.

‘’But if JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test, then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission.

“The ministry expects that all candidates given admission must be from JAMB. but JAMB must stop issuing admission letters, JAMB should get in touch with institutions before offering admission to students.

‘’The closing date is November 30th and no university should exceed its admission capacity and any tertiary institution that doesn’t follow the rule, the ministry would start sanctioning them.

‘’Institutions should stop admitting students into un-accredited courses in their institutions. The institutions should stop writing JAMB to increase their quotas because JAMB cannot do that.”

The minister also said institutions should stop writing J AMB to increase their quotas as there were relevant agencies to do so.

Adamu also reminded the stakeholders that the criteria for admission was still in force, and asked the institutions to adhere to it.

“Merit is 45%, catchment area 35% and educational development in less developed states 20%, this is for federal universities and for states universities, merit 40%, catchment 40 % and less developed local governments get 20%,’’ he said.

The Minister also asked the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others

She is in a critical condition in hospital but is expected to survive.

The children’s grandmother, Tanella McCoy, said Rogers was a ‘good mother’ and did not appear to be having any problems with her children.

‘I don’t know what to feel right now. I don’t know where to go, I don’t know where to turn,’ Ms McCoy told The Arizona Republic.

A young man in Benin had his life, and genitals exposed in the ‘open public’ when he was caught attempting to steal female citizen’s phone.

The guy who claims to be 22 years old was had successfully removed the phone, but on his way out of the lady’s shop, his cup finally overflowed. Someone who noticed his kurukere movements stopped and searched him, and behold, a phone not belonging to him was found on his person. He was stripped naked and given the flogging of his life with koboko. The police came in afterwards and saved the disgraced lad.

Multichoice Cable television (DSTV) has removed popular transgender reality television programme, “I am Cait’’ form E Entertainment Channel following complaints by Nigerians. This is contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the company.

The top television company succumbed to pressure from the Nigerian market, adding that the docu-series had been removed from the DSTV channel 124 and GOtv channel 24. The company had assured that they would review client’s complaints and ensure that their interests were given priority.

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, is a gold medal-winning track star who set a world record in the decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics. As Bruce, he became a reality TV star in “Keeping Up with the Kardashians’’. In 2015, Jenner revealed that she is transgender and has become a woman, now known as Caitlyn.
