Business / Naira Abysmal Appreciation by JayKiz(m): 7:46am On Dec 04, 2020
These are not the good times for the Nigerian Naira currency. The Nigerian economy, its Central Bank, the custodian of its monetary policy, which many of her citizens expects to engineer sound monetary policy that would have safeguard the none further devaluation of the naira is at this point helpless and worried. However, the blame should not be place at the door step of the CBN or the current managers has the problems with the naira goes beyond them and particular beyond the Nigerian state and Africa as well. It is important to approach this discussion from both a process and content perspectives, it is only by so doing that one can begun to unravel the intricacies of the entire range of issues involved and their interconnectedness. But first a general observation is required from an historical perspectives on Africa economy and it currency problems. The internationalization of Africa economy spell from the history of the “colonial economy that essentially serves as the stimulation of extensive primary produce given by deliberate capital allocation and enabling infrastructure like railways and other rural road network, linking to sea port for onward transfer to the metropolitan markets of the colonial masters. This pattern of economic activities did not create the secondary sectors of industrial process”. Thus, we can fathom from a logical conclusion that, the systemic and systematic plight of colonial Africa economy abused by its colonial master nurture in conjuncture with representatives of international monopoly capital is the root cause of the region currency woes. No doubt, the majority of Africa’s estimated 800milion people and still counting are disillusioned and desperate. The region is not just on the bottom rung of human development indicators. African has become a metaphor for disease, poverty, unemployment, corruption, bad governance, political instability and faces the greatest human displace. Moreso, it economy is worse for it with of de-industrialization, technology and skills deficit and poor productive capacity.

Nairaland / General / 81% Of People Living In Africa Know Their HIV Status- WHO by JayKiz(m): 4:19pm On Dec 01, 2020
As the world commemorates the 2020 World AIDS Day, WHD, today, the World Health Organization, WHO, has declared that at least 81% of Africans already know their HIV status.

This was contained in a message delivered today by WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti to mark the day in the African continent.

Moeti said, ” 2020 is a milestone year towards ending AIDS epidemics and 81 % of the people living with HIV know their status.”
“Among them, 70 percent of adults and 53 percent of children are receiving lifelong antiretroviral therapy, ART.”
The WHO Regional Director noted that the WAD is marked every year on the 1st of December by the global community to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have lost their lives to AIDS.
According to the global health body, worldwide, there are 38 million people living with HIV and 67% of them reside in the African Region.

In 2019, more than 1 million people in the Region were newly infected with HIV, accounting for 60% of the global total, and sadly, 440,000 people in the Region died from HIV-related causes.
Speaking on the 2020 WAD theme “global solidarity and shared responsibility” was chosen because of the context of the COVID-19 pandemic as it reveals how important it is for the world to come together, with determined leadership from governments and communities to sustain and expand access to essential services, including HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care.

WHO noted that with the COVID-19 pandemic it is becoming even more challenging for countries to provide these services, particularly in areas affected by conflict, disasters, outbreaks and rapid population growth.

WHO lamented that presently in the African Region new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths are not reducing fast enough to meet the Sustainable Development Goal target of ending AIDS epidemics by 2030.
Children living with HIV are not being adequately identified for HIV treatment. Girls and women aged 15–24 years account for 37% of all new HIV infections, and stigma and discrimination especially against key populations continues to create barriers to service access.

And then the good news is that Eighty-five percent of pregnant and breastfeeding women living with HIV are on ART, which protects their health and prevents HIV transmission to their newborn infants.
The health body however commended countries and stakeholders for contributing to the progress on HIV in the African Region, and urged them to come up with innovative ways to keep services going during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO called for global solidarity and shared responsibility among all stakeholders to ensure integrated, people-centred, quality care and an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities for HIV services.
The rights of women and girls, and gender equality, must be at the centre to stop new HIV infections among girls and young women, it emphazied.

Nairaland / General / Tambuwal Condoles Borno Empire Over Massacre by JayKiz(m): 11:43pm On Nov 30, 2020
Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajiun!!!
It is with deep shock and displeasure that the government and good people of Sokoto state received the sad and upsetting news of Boko Haram attack on scores of rice farmers in a village near Maiduguri today.

We are deeply concerned and worried that an unspecified number of our enterprising citizens, who had traveled hundreds of kilometers to seek their means of livelihood in the areas where the attacks took place, were also affected.
This act, at once abominable, disgusting and inhuman, is very disturbing.

As we condoled the government and good people of Borno, with who we have consistently shared our sympathy and solidarity in weathering this horrendous trend of insecurity, we also commiserate with the families of the victims from our state.

God willing we will collaborate with the government of Borno to ascertain the number of our citizens affected with a view to identifying them. In the same vein we will support the families of the victims.

“I pray to Allah to grant all of the victims eternal rest and their families the fortitude to bear this heart wrenching loss”.
He also pray for God’s intercession in bringing this spate of insecurity in the country at large to an end.

Nairaland / General / Revolutionizing Education In Abia Through Digital Learning by JayKiz(m): 9:39am On Nov 29, 2020
Indeed, better times are here once again for Abia children. In a question of months, if not days, digital learning will be pioneered this part of the world. And this innovation will shoot them miles ahead their contemporaries.

In the words of Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu” with that device, my children will ahead of other children in Nigeria”.
The most interesting episode of this narrative is that the state has taken delivery of the machines that will teach Abia children using smart box.

Another interesting feature of this digital learning process is that it can teach up to 25 subjects with different curricular already programmed in the machine.
The story is not yet completed as four model schools across the senatorial districts will soon spring up. The model schools will be located at Obingwa, Osisioma, Ohafia and Umuahia.

The current innovation is one in a million. Remember the Education for Employment Programme (E4E). A programme that was conceptualized around creating employment and to ensure that education leads to employment by imbuing the youths with the technical skills that would enable them become either self-employed or sought after by others. E4E reactivated Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) in the state.
It was also conceptualised in training youths in various technical and vocational skills to take up jobs in industries or be self-employment and help grow the economy.
This was a perfect interpretation of the Chinese proverb of “teaching the youths how to fish instead of giving them fish”. “In this new Abia” according to Gov. Ikpeazu during his inaugural speech at Umuahia Township Stadium, “instead of giving our people fish (handouts), we will focus on leading them to grow economically”.

This was disclosed on Monday at the National Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 23rd National press briefing by the Chairman Boss Mustapha. Within the last two weeks, flights from Europe (the Air France, Lufthansa and KLM) resumed their operations into Nigeria.

Mustapha said, “Ahead of the upsurge in travels for the Christmas and New Year festivities, we urge strongly that for this year, such trips should be put on hold firmly because of the risks involved. The transmission rate has simply become astronomical.” “Now that European airlines have joined others operating into Nigeria, the PTF still considers it highly necessary to caution as always, against non-essential trips (especially to high burden destinations) because the world is now experiencing a new wave of the pandemic, more than ever before.
There will always be many more festive seasons to celebrate.”

PTF also discouraged large social gatherings during the Christmas and New Year festivities, large social gathering because of a bigger risk of COVID-19 transmission. “New clusters of cases can emerge in places that have so far been unaffected as people travel and gather for festivities. But we can lower the risks by adhering to the NPIs and celebrate, safely. “He noted that the various guidelines and the testing regime prescribed for in-bound passengers shall remain strictly in force.

Politics / HURIWA To Speaker: Take Responsibility For The Killing Of Abuja Vendor by JayKiz(m): 1:44pm On Nov 20, 2020
Demands Speaker’s resignation and payment of N100 million to the family of the ASSASINATED Newspaper Vendor:

The speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila has been asked to take responsibility for the extrajudicial killing of Abuja Newspaper Vendor Mr. Ifeanyi Okereke by a security aide attached to the speaker just as the Rights group dismissed the tepid explanation offered by the parliamentarian on the tragic but entirely avoidable incident.

The Rights group said the Speaker is in the terrible habit of moving about and around Abuja with hundreds of people in his convoy and wonders why such a man that had his higher education and worked in a civilized Clime like the United States of America could be so power drunk and primitive as to intimidate poor residents of Abuja each time he needs to attend a function. “The other day at a five star hotel, the Speaker was seen with nearly one hundred people attending just one meeting. The fuel and human resources wasted in running the office of Speaker in the current administration is outrageous and wayward”. HURIWA CONDEMNS the killing of the vendor as pure murder and has demanded for the immediate arrest, prosecution and punishment for murder of the trigger happy cop who shot and killed the Abuja Vendor.

“In management as well as in political leadership, the revered ethical principles of responsibility and accountability demands that speaker Gbajabiaila takes total responsibility for the irresponsible conduct of his personal security assistant who reports directly to him just as HURIWA says the speaker showed insensitivity and reckless lack of empathy by failing to render first aid assistance to the Vendor the moment he was shot going by the reports that the speaker allegedly asked the trigger happy security detail why he shot at the Vendor. The attempt by the speaker to spread propaganda seeking to exculpate or exonerate his person from that despicable crime is totally unacceptable.”

The Federal Government on Thursday insisted that there were no mass killings at the Lekki toll gate in the wake of the #EndSARS protests contrary to the general belief.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said this at a press conference in Abuja.

Mohammed said those who alleged massacre at the toll gate only succeeded in misleading the world.

He said while government awaits the outcome of the panel investigating the matter, “we can say that the world has just witnessed a massacre without bodies” in Lekki.

The minister insisted that the military did not shoot at protesters at the toll gate.

He asked anyone who has contrary proofs to make them available to the panel investigating the matter.

Mohammed said the government was satisfied with the way security agencies handled the protests.
The minister took a swipe at CNN for its piece on the Lekki incident, describing it as “blatantly irresponsible.”

The World Health Organization, WHO, today has recorded a historic milestone as it launched the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer and it’s related deaths by 2050. WHO says the strategy outlines three key steps which includes vaccination, screening and treatment, adding that successful implementation of all three could reduce more than 40% of new cases of the disease and 5 million related deaths by 2050.

WHO Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Gbebreyeyus during the launch said, “Eliminating Cervical Cancer would have once seemed impossible dream, but we now have the cost- effective, evidence based tools to make that dream a reality.”
But we can only eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem if we match the power of the tools we have with unrelenting determination to scale up their use globally, Gbebreyeyus emphazied.

WHO Director General, Dr. Princesses Nothemba Simelela said, ” The huge rate of mortality related to cervical cancer is a consequence of decades of neglect by global health community. According to her” Critical development s include availability of prophylactic vaccines, low cost approaches to screening and treating cervical cancer precursors and novel approaches to surgical training.
Through a shared global commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, and leaving no one behind the countries of the world are forging a new oath to ending cervical cancer.
In a statement WHO said,” today’s development represents a historic milestone because it marks the first time that 194 countries commit to eliminating cancer – following adoption of a resolution at this year’s World Health Assembly.”

By Mike Oboh

The Nigeria Basketball Federation has announced that final camping for the 2021 FIBA Afrobasket qualifiers will commence on November 23, 2020.

Making this known in Abuja, the NBBF Secretary General, Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi said players are expected to fly into Kigali.

On the duration of the final camping exercise, the NBBF President, Engr Ahmadu Musa Kida revealed that the federation would have loved to have a longer final training camp for the qualifiers, but due to the prevailing factors, camp will have to open four days before the team’s first game.

“Longer camping period would have been the best option for the team. It would have enabled the boys to have enough time to blend under Coach Mike Brown.

“Some of the players are preparing for the new season with their clubs while some are actively involved in the Euro League, so we cannot snatch them away for long.”

Education / Exam Malpractices: Kogi Poly Parades 16 Students by JayKiz(m): 11:39am On Nov 10, 2020
Aftermath the discovery and bursting of the “examination magic centres” outside Kogi state Polytechnic, no fewer than 16 students have been arrested while over 32 are on the run. The Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Salihu Ogbo Usman, who disclosed this at a press conference held in Lokoja on Monday, tagged his address as “stemming the tides of endemic academic decadence and lawlessness in Kogi state Polytechnic”. He pointed out that the “magic centres” were created and controlled by a syndicate of some disgruntled elements in the system and have been operating within the campus while the examination was ongoing. According to Dr Usman, “on the 5th of November 2020 , our team of security were able to burst one of the centres called ‘Champion Logde’ at Sarkin Noma a suburb of Lokoja after the primary school.” The Rector pointed out that Even though the suspects escaped before the arrival of the security team, a total of 32 scripts already answered with respective different courses bearing students particulars were retrieved from “California Lodge” at the same Sarki Noma axis where they were kept for onward transmission to their principals” With the un -relented efforts of the security unit and the management team, the Rector disclosed that other participants at the magic centre were arrested on Friday last week, who confessed to, not only participated, but also paid N2,000 per paper. Dr. Usman further pointed out that as at Monday 9th November 2020, additional 12 participants of the alleged magic centres were also arrested and they equally confessed of their involvement in the malpractice, while two students of the school, Victor Attah the owner the room used as the magic centre and Daniel Ikoja whose room was used as transit point of the script were arrested respectively. Dr. Usman alleged that some staff of the institution who are bent on sabotaging the ongoing reforms embarked by the new administration, have been inciting students against the constituted authority of Polytechnic. He therefore warned staff, students and the entire Polytechnic community, that the management under his watch would not tolerate acts capable of tarnishing the credibility of the results and certificates of the institution. The Rector warned the deviant students and their collaborators to desist from short cut practices in their own interest and in the common interest of all of us. Dr. Usman who commended the state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for creating enabling environment for learning therefore assured the the state, parents and students of an open door policy of administration, commitment to the principles of the present government with high expectation of attaining Education excellence.

Foreign Affairs / US Election: US Attorney General Approves Fraud Investigation by JayKiz(m): 10:26am On Nov 10, 2020
US Attorney General William Barr gave federal prosecutors blanket authorization Monday to open investigations into voting irregularities, as President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims he lost the presidential election due to fraud. Barr, long a close defender of Trump, stressed that his letter to US attorneys around the country was not an indication that the Justice Department had evidence yet of genuine cases of fraud in the election won by Democratic challenger Joe Biden. But he unleashed the prosecutors from former restrictions on such probes, just as Republicans levelled claims of illegal voting and vote counting in several states, claims that still await solid evidence. “Given that voting in our current elections has now concluded, I authorize you to pursue substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities prior to the certification of elections in your jurisdictions in certain cases,” Barr said in the letter. “Such inquiries and reviews may be conducted if there are clear and apparently-credible allegations of irregularities that, if true, could potentially impact the outcome of a federal election in an individual state.” Voting fraud investigations are normally the purview of individual states, which establish and police their own election rules. Justice Department policy has been to hold back any federal involvement until vote tallies are certified, recounts completed and races concluded. But Barr told the attorneys that “practice has never been a hard and fast rule,” and stressed that, if they see anything that could reverse the results of last Tuesday’s election, they should pursue it. “While serious allegations should be handled with great care, specious, speculative, fanciful or far-fetched claims should not be a basis for initiating federal inquiries,” he wrote. US media reported that the head of the Justice Department’s Election Crimes Branch, which oversees investigations into voter fraud, resigned following Barr’s order. The branch director, Richard Pilger, reportedly handed in his resignation within hours of Barr’s authorization. In an email to colleagues about Barr’s order, Pilger said, “Having familiarized myself with the new policy and its ramifications… I must regretfully resign from my role,” The New York Times reported. Barr’s order came as Trump battles to reverse Biden’s narrow wins in several key states — Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia and Arizona — that gave Barack Obama’s former vice president enough electoral votes to win the overall presidential election. The Trump campaign and the Republican party have filed or threatened lawsuits in several of the states, hoping to change the outcome with ballot disqualifications and recounts. But so far, their actions have gone nowhere, and state officials have challenged them to provide proof of allegations. Trump had reportedly pressured Barr to get involved on his behalf even weeks before the election. But the attorney general had disappeared from public view for several weeks, until Monday when he was seen meeting with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
