does the laptop gets too hot ? The internal fan might have failed, so it shutdown the system by itself

It's probably the processor and graphics card paste drying out and not conducting the heat way fast enough so, it's over heating.

Ensure the fan is working fine then try get paste ... Scrape off the old one and put new... Or get a computer engineer to do that ... U may change the cooking fan too ...

I have hp elitebook 8540p with same issue ...

Had same issue but had to tweak the speed ... Put maximum speed at 70% when on high performance and 65% when on balanced ...

It's been working for me since a year ....

I use the laptop to render 3d animated motion graphics / video editing

What is the health status of your battery?
Does your system power on without a battery? If yes, try to power it without a battery.
If it's still the same try another battery. After this we would know the next thing to troubleshoot.
