Phones / Google's Effort To Help Smartphone Addiction by JeanJackson124: 5:05pm On May 14, 2018
Google will set time limits on apps which will make smartphones easier to ignore in response to fears that they are becoming too addictive.

A software update to Android, the company’s smartphone operating system, is designed to make it easier to ignore mobile phones.
It is one of the first times in decades that a major technology company has acknowledged that smartphones and social media apps may have become too distracting, following calls from health experts and organizations that people have become dependent on the devices.

Unveiling the changes at its annual developer conference in Silicon Valley, Google said future Android phones would include an optional app timer that will alert owners when they have spent a pre-set amount of time on an app. The feature will “nudge” users when they are approaching the time limit, and then make the app’s icon black and white when they have passed it, to discourage them from using it.

A separate feature will allow users to specify a particular bed time, and silence alerts as well as turning the phone’s colour screen to a greyscale format, a change that is believed to make mobile phone screens less attractive.

A third update is designed to automatically recognise when a phone has been placed face-down on a table and respond accordingly, by silencing notifications such as phone calls and text messages. The software will also tell users how much time they are spending on individual apps and how many times in a day they unlock their phone.

The changes will be included in the next major update to Android, which is due to be released later this year. The software accounts for more than half of smartphone sales in the UK, and more than three quarters worldwide.

Earlier this year, Apple investors demanded that the company include features in the iPhone that would make them less addictive to children. Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, recently demanded that social media companies introduce time limits for children.

Science/Technology / New Developments For Smart Industries by JeanJackson124: 4:55pm On May 14, 2018
The new machine above which is known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a new development in technology which promises to support a new era of smart industry.

It is basically founded on the notions of openness and interoperability, easy scalability and mostly ‘Big Data’, it can help enterprises drive significant operational improvements across their various manufacturing and business processes.

IIoT technologies are addressing a space that is already turned-on to the benefits of machine-to-machine communication, remote access and intensive data gathering to feed statistical process control, manufacturing management and continuous improvement initiatives.

In fact, the data flows throughout modern industrial enterprises are already organized into a mature hierarchy.

Phones / Brain Imbalance Caused By Addiction To Smartphone by JeanJackson124: 4:01pm On May 14, 2018
A new study carried out has proved that people's smartphone addiction causes an important imbalance in the brain.

The research carried out, looked at people who were often tied to their phone and the internet. The research findings was that it appeared to be doing damage to the way brain functions, causing chemical unbalances that could cause intense tiredness and mental uneasiness.

People who described themselves as being addicted to their phone were put through a test known as an MRS, which looks at the chemical makeup of people's brains. They measured levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical that slows down signals in the brain.
It found that the ratio of GABA to another important neurotransmitter was off in people who had been diagnosed with internet and smartphone addiction. That could be having deep effects on the way their brain works, the researchers said.
Many would as how sure are we that it is necessarily smartphone addiction that causes the imbalance?

Previous studies have linked GABA to vision and motor control and the regulation of various brain functions, including anxiety. The changes in the brain could also be linked to problems with processing information and emotions, according to Hyung Suk Seo, the Korea University professor who carried out the research.

The study looked at 19 young people, all of whom had been diagnosed with internet or smartphone addiction. They were paired with a set of people who hadn't but were of the same age and gender and different sex.
The participants were scored on how intense their smartphone or internet addiction was. That was done by putting them through a questionnaire – looking at how much their phone ruins their productivity or sleeping patters, for instance – that gave them a score that could then be used to calculate how severe their addiction is.

It found that the ratios of GABA to creatine and glutamate, two other important acids, were correlated to the score of how addicted people were to the internet and their phones, and to depression and anxiety.

Phones / How To Become Empowered Making Use Of Your Old Cell Phone by JeanJackson124: 3:52pm On May 14, 2018
Rain forest connection high tendency of saving the rain forest with old cell phones.

It's a technology that has emerged quiet recently and proved to be necessary for saving the rain forest.

Rain forests are known to have some of the most complicated sounds capes on the planet. In this dense noise of insects, primates, birds, and everything else that moves in the forest. The question is how can you detect the sounds of illegal logging?

The old cell phone you have sitting in your desk drawer may have the answer.

How do you go about saving the rain forest with old cell phones?

After a visit to the rain forests of Borneo, physicist and engineer Topher White was struck by the sounds of the forest. In particular, the noises he couldn’t hear.

While on a walk, White and others came across an illegal logger sawing down a tree just a few hundred meters away from a ranger station.

This incident set White thinking that perhaps the best way to save the Earth’s precious rain forest is to listen to its loggers and poachers. The innovation he came up with, Rain forest Connection, uses old cell phones to help to save the planet in a big way.

It’s hard to feel like these actions carried out have an impact in solving a problem like deforestation. We can choose to change our spending habits to stop the economic support of deforestation, but this doesn’t necessarily have an impact at the root of the problem.

We can, though, choose to support projects like Rain forest Connection!

If you have an old cell phone you want to give a second life saving the rain forest, you can send it to Rain forest Connection, and if the device doesn’t work for their needs, the donation will still go to supporting the project. You can check out how you can get involved with this project over on the Rain forest Connection website.

Perhaps it is time to change the narrative about saving the planet. We need to feel empowered and the more we understand how our small actions can have an enormous impact, the more we engage others to do the same.
