raumdeuter: Owen after Liverpool was signed by Madrid, Torres after Liverpool was signed by Chelsea. Madrid and Chelsea are some of the best sides in Euro football
Now lets try for Finan, Traore, Kuyt, Bellamy Pennant, Crouch, Kewell, Smicer, etc The question was "what happened to their careers after Liverpool" though. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Jemi7: 5:08pm On Oct 17, 2018 |
raumdeuter: Van Dyke was not world class at Southampton but he was a vast improvement over what they had. which was Matip, Klavan and Lovren
Before the start of that season gerrard slipped the league away, Did anyone at the beginning of that season look at Liverpool and thought that they could win the league? It was Suarez having another unexpected "Salah season".
If those players werent added we will have a team that played the CL final last season but will they be considered league favourites?
Roma were CL semi finalists last year, Is anyone thinking of them as Serie A or CL favorite this year or even potential semi finalist With the kind of football they played last season and reaching the final, they sure would have been considered among the favorites to reach the final again. And a team that reached a Champions League final would also be considered among the favorites to win the league |

raumdeuter: Which player who carried the team all by himself in the history of the game was the one keeping, defending assisting and scoring by himself?
What happened to those players after their Liverpool careers? Traore, Finan, Biscan Kewell, Sisoko, Bellamy, Crouch etc What happened to them afterwards is irrelevant, what happened to Owen after Liverpool? Torres? But that's not the point. The credit you said Gerrard should get in the Champions League in 2007 is what I want to know because as far as my memory serves me right, He wasn't the highest anything that season they made the final |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Jemi7: 4:57pm On Oct 17, 2018 |
raumdeuter: So you think they just decided to break transfer records to sign average players? Currently Liverpool is involved in a title race for the first time in a long time and they are starting the season as one of the top 2 favourites to win. why is that?
If those players werent added they still have Karius in goal. They will be an average team and slightly better than last season based on the fact they would have developed more chemistry and played together longer Was Van dyke World Class at Southampton? Was he even the second or third best Defender in the league before his move to Liverpool It was just 4 years ago Gerrard "slipped the league title away" though. If those players weren't added, you will have a team that just played in a Champions League final the previous season |

nihilistjnr: Yes very average minus Salah
Like Dayo said, Klopps tactics and Salah's form allowed them to shine.
Remove Salah last season, and see them get spanked 3-1 in a champions league final.
Apart from Salah and Van Dijk, Liverpool dont have any world class player. Well, You have agreed but I no still agree say team wey make two Champions League finals in three years na average at least I got you to agree to what Dayo has been skipping |

raumdeuter: Yes it counted for something that is why Gerrard and Benitez to me gets a lot of credit
They changed Dudek, Djimi Traore, Hamman, Baros, Luis Garcia, Kewell replacing them with more pipes like Kuyt, Pennant, Zenden, Sissoko, Bellamy and Crouch and still made the final again And Gerrard did all the passing to himself, assisting and scoring all the goals by himself while the rest players were just training cones, pipe like crouch was the second highest goal scorer after Kaka in 2007, Pipes like finnan and Bellamy were Liverpool's highest assist creators with 4 and 3, Gerrard had 2 |

nihilistjnr: what had Kyle Walker, Ederson, Fernandinho, KDB, Aguero, David Silva, Laporte and co won before joining City?
If not for Salah, that Liverpool team was very average. There's a reason Klopp broke his own transfer rules and ran to buy Allison and Van Dijk - if in doubt, check what happened in UCL final. Your first paragraph is exactly the point I am trying to make with the Liverpool team that made the Champions League final twice in 3 years, My reason for asking Dayo if the Liverpool team this season is average, Let's remove the players bought this season because they weren't part of Liverpool's Champions League campaign last season, which brings me to this, is the Liverpool team average? Cause I am still struggling to see how and why a team that made two finals in three years is average even with the addition of new players, if we agree that this Liverpool team now after their exploits in the Champions League last season is average, I will agree the Liverpool team that made two finals in three years was average |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Jemi7: 4:03pm On Oct 17, 2018 |
patrickmuf: Reaching the UCL final twice in quick succession should count for something especially at a time Barcelona, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, AC Milan, Juventus etc were almost on par. They even beat Barcelona to progress to the quarter finals that year. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Jemi7: 4:02pm On Oct 17, 2018 |
raumdeuter: They made the CL final last season not this season.
They have made significant improvement and their team this season cant be called average when you have some of the most expensive players in the world in it
In their current team they have one of the most expensive Keepers midfielder and defender in the world
Adding Keita Allison and Van Dyke to the team is an injection of about 200M.
You cannot spend 200M and not improve your team unless you are Conte Expensive doesn't mean world class, the players added this season weren't in the team that played the Champions League final last season, except one, One was from Monaco, one was from Leipzig, One was from Roma. We haven't seen what these new additions will do in the league or the Champions League, Now let's assume these new players weren't added this season. With the team that played the Champions League last season, would you still call them average this season? |

raumdeuter: This season their team is better than last year but the reference was Liverpool of last year
Oxlade couldnt make Arsenal team became one of their best midfielder, Lovren, Klavan Karius, Wijdamun, Milner, look at that lineup would you push for Mourinho to sign any of those this time last year The reference was last season because it would lead us to this season, is The team average now? |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Jemi7: 3:43pm On Oct 17, 2018 |
raumdeuter: Liverpool of last year was average. Before last season how many of those Liverpool players will you support your team to but for more than 30M
The only thing that worked for them last year was the Klopp tactic and the insane form of Sallah
Otherwise Trent Arnold, Lovren, Robertson Matip Klavan, Gomez Henderson Milner, Wijnaldum are just mediocre players most wont even stand out at average West Ham or Newcastle And this season? |

afrodoc2: I don't know about that one, but that 04/05 Liverpool team had some truly fecal players. Gerrard was very, very key to that team.
Now whether it makes him better than Lampard, Scholes, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Lothar Matthaus, Ruud Gullit, Andrea Pirlo e.t.c who did not have to carry teams so much for that long is a different debate entirely. You don forget how the debate take start? This whole thing is to prove how and why Gerrard is better than Scholes |

afrodoc2: Gerrard saved Liverpool on at least 3 occasions that year.
1) Without his goals they don't qualify for the champions league proper.
2) Without his end of game golazo against Olympiacos at Anfield they don't qualify from their group.
3) Without his goal and warrior mentality they don't come back to win that final.
Although Nihilist has been wrong about many things lately, he is right on the money in this one. That is not even the point, He is using this as a reason why Steve is better than Scholes |

raumdeuter: Jerzy Dudek, Steve Finan, Djimi Traore, Caragher, Hyppia, Biscan, Tudor, Kewell Baros, Crouch, Pennant, Kuyt, Zenden, Bellany, Momo Sissoko,
Be honest, read this list and tell me any player that can be called average here, Most of them will be below average given their career trajectory outside Liverpool
Those players beat the all dominating Chelsea twice, beat Milan, Beat Capellos Juventus, Beat Ronaldinhos Barcelona at Nou Camp
That credit goes to the leadership of Benitez and Gerrard
Most of these players are the caliber that will play for Bolton Wanderers or West Ham not a team that made 2 CL finals in 3 yrs I am not even saying these guys aren't average, I am saying not all of them were at the time, This is quite similar to Liverpool of last season, can we call Liverpool of last season average too? Considering the names that played in the final |

nihilistjnr: That was all Gerrard Gerrard was in the final in 2007, No? Since it was all Gerrard in 2005, what stopped it from being all Gerrard with an even better team in 2007? Gerrard carried Liverpool on his back to absolutely nothing but one champions league title and a few league cups(hope I am not even exaggerating this) cause I can only think of one league cup they won, For more than 13 years, Liverpool had average teams for more than 13 years, Yes? |

nihilistjnr: Ghost Goal is one way of stumbling over the line to a UCL final in a season where Liverpool didn't even make top 4 in their league.
in 06/07 Liverpool had to qualify for UCL via play off, and were lucky to beat Chelsea in the semis. That's how you stumble to final. I'm sure they played in the group stage, knockout rounds and quarter final before they reached the final, You can't start your stumbling from the semis. Didn't they beat Barcelona and a PSV side that beat Arsenal? Influential is not better my G |

A40: Wasn't that the team with Djimi Traore and Jerzy goddamn Dudek in goal? Milan Baros?
That team punched above its weight tbvh It was also the team that had Hyypia, Riise, Carragher, Alonso and crouch. Calling this team average is like Calling Liverpool of last season average. First final? I agree, but a second final two seasons after? That is more than a team that punched above its weight IMO |

Stumble bawo How do you make two finals in three seasons and call it stumbling? Steve carried Liverpool on his back to absolutely nothing but 1 Champions League and and 1 or two league cups in more than 13 years Influential is not better |

A40: To be fair to Gerrard, Liverpool squad that year was rubbish. From goalkeeper to attack. After Owen left they didn't have a half decent striker till Torres came. Gerrard had his phuck ups but that team was usually bang average Liverpool made and won the final after Owen and made another final before Torres, They made two finals in 3 seasons. This doesn't really say average in my opinion |
