Reaching the UCL final twice in quick succession should count for something especially at a time Barcelona, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, AC Milan, Juventus etc were almost on par.

They even beat Barcelona to progress to the quarter finals that year.

I don't know about that one, but that 04/05 Liverpool team had some truly fecal players. Gerrard was very, very key to that team.

Now whether it makes him better than Lampard, Scholes, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Lothar Matthaus, Ruud Gullit, Andrea Pirlo e.t.c who did not have to carry teams so much for that long is a different debate entirely.

in 06/07 Liverpool had to qualify for UCL via play off, and were lucky to beat Chelsea in the semis. That's how you stumble to final.

I'm sure they played in the group stage, knockout rounds and quarter final before they reached the final, You can't start your stumbling from the semis. Didn't they beat Barcelona and a PSV side that beat Arsenal?

To be fair to Gerrard, Liverpool squad that year was rubbish. From goalkeeper to attack. After Owen left they didn't have a half decent striker till Torres came. Gerrard had his phuck ups but that team was usually bang average

Liverpool made and won the final after Owen and made another final before Torres, They made two finals in 3 seasons. This doesn't really say average in my opinion
