Oh, and by the way, my priorities have changed, so I'm no longer pursuing a career in teaching, but I really do have a blog - The Naija Brit.

KEEP CALM AND VOTE TBOSS
I live in London, so I can't vote. I'm just pissed off because that's all my Nigerian friends talk about on Facebook.

I love what you are trying to explain, but let me educate you a little, in case you ain't informed about it.

MJ had a serious fire burn, while he was performing cut promo for Pepsi in 1984, which he was rushed out of stage. The Vitiligo about MJ ain't natural, but was as a result of fire burn. Please search for the video via YouTube. Thanks.

Modified: Video included.

Actually, MJ suffered vitiligo BEFORE the Pepsi commercial - if you look at old photos you can tell he used make up to even out his skin tone, and I remember reading somewhere that he first discovered the patches when he was a boy. The burns he sustained caused him to rely on wigs which he continued until his death. And I very much doubt that fire causes vitiligo.

To be fair if you find yourself trapped in a house for days with no contact from the outside world, you'd find everyone in the house sexually attractive, even if they resemble dehydrated yam-heads. Remember Code from Big Brother Africa years ago? He seduced all the girls in the house, and his pregnant Dutch girlfriend, who happened to be a trained nurse, was waiting for him outside on eviction night. She forgave him because she knew that people can't stay in that situation without wanting a shag. Having said that, I do agree that the show is immoral - surely they know that their parents are watching?

Seriously, why are Nigerians crazy over this Big Brother bullshit? Why sit at home watching people sitting at home? Jobless people...

It's ironic how some of the people here are criticising other people's grammatical errors when their own skills are totally atrocious...
Romance / Re: Backstreet Boys Or Westlife by jemmabond(f): 2:08pm On Mar 30, 2017
Backstreet Boys all the way! Loved them then, love them now. I remember the good old days when I used to listen to Rick Dees on Cool FM and the World Chart Show with Ace and Joe on Ray Power just to hear news about them, although it has to be said that in those days you were either Team BSB or Team NSYNC...and I prefered the latter. The Backstreet Boys worked very hard from the beginning, touring schools across the country before they got their record deal, and they can all sing. Oh, and Howie is so cute, although Nick looked like a girl in the early days! Westlife were only popular in Europe, and most of their songs were covers, not originals.

Nairaland / General / Whatever Happened To Charity, The Acid Victim Beauty Queen From Port-harcourt? by jemmabond(f): 12:35pm On Oct 14, 2013
In 1990, Prime People carried the news that Charity, a former Port-Harcourt College of Education student was bathed in acid by her jilted boyfriend Chukwudi. The event took place in Port-Harcourt's GRA, and his parting words before fleeing were reportedly "Let me see how any man will love you". Charity was left with burns which disfigured her beyond recognition, and while this was not the first time a Nigerian had become an acid victim, this case was made even more heart-breaking by the fact Charity had been crowned campus queen not long before the incident (Miss Uniport, I believe). Although Chukwudi was arrested, he is believed to have been acquitted.

Following consultation, Charity was deemed eligible for reconstructive surgery abroad, albeit with costs running into thousands. Several well-meaning Nigerians donated money to this cause, and a number of Nigerian celebrities including Onyeka and Femi Jarrett organised gala night fund-raisers and concerts which included raffle draws. The winner of the car during the raffle draw reportedly donated the car to the fund-raisers who sold it to raise more money. Meanwhile, opinions polls debated over which punishment would best suit Chukwudi, thus becoming a talking point among law-makers; even The Third Eye aired an episode in which a gossip journalist was bathed in acid by an angry colleague.

The last time I heard of Charity, Radio Rivers 2 confirmed that Charity had been flown aboard for surgery, but the outcome remains unknown. Does anyone remember this incident? It's a shame given one minute everyone was talking about her, and the next minute no-one cared.

Fashion / Re: British-nigerian For Miss Nigeria 2013? by jemmabond(f): 2:07am On Feb 13, 2013
Hello Yemmi,

I've just read your post and seen your video. As a fellow London girl who has been following pageants for most of her life and editing the Wikipedia pages of MBGN and Miss Nigeria, I think that you should be commended for competing in Miss Nigeria as an international contestant, but I also understand your apprehension.

It is a well-known fact that Nigerians in general do not take kindly to their own kinsmen who sound foreign - the television presenter Adaure Achumba received some well-documented criticism for her American drawl which overshadowed her presenting skills. When I first visited Nigeria at the age of eight, no one criticised me whenever I sounded Nigerian (I adopted the accent almost as soon as I got off the plane because I wanted to fit in), but they called me a "fake" as soon as my natural British accent was used...oh the irony! These days, I speak like the proud Brit that I am, and I don't really care what anyone says. Yes, I am proud of my Nigerian roots, but at the end of the day it's what I speak that's important, as opposed to how I speak.

Two years ago, Miss Nigeria Ireland 2009 Emmanuella Salako competed in Miss Nigeria 2010 and placed in the top five, despite her slight Irish accent. There have also been a number of pageant winners from Nigeria who had British accents when they were crowned, most notably Nike Oshinowo and Emma Komlosy who won MBGN in 1991 and 1996 respectively, although I believe they toned it down when they went to represent Nigeria at Miss World, and Toyin Raji, another former MBGN who was named Miss Congeniality at Miss Universe 1995 sounded very American. Their reign raised several eyebrows as most believed that they were not a true representation of Nigeria, but that was nothing compared to the backlash former Miss Minnesota USA Erica Nego faced when she represented Ghana at Miss Universe 2011, albeit as Yayra Nego - you only need to search for MISS UNIVERSE 2011 - Ghana on YouTube to view the nasty comments.

Unlike Erica and Emma, you happen to be dark-skinned, and that is a good thing, because light-skinned girls have dominated pageants for too long, and you''ll probably be the one to break that curse! I also admire how you kept your Afrocentrism by wearing braids in your video, and you look like a girl who is hard-working, which is exactly what Miss Nigeria is looking for, and of course it helps that you are very well-spoken, unlike most contestants I know. Miss Nigeria organisers tend to select natural girls like yourself, unlike the artificial hopefuls at rival contest MBGN - some of the girls there actually look like they belong on Snog, Marry, Avoid...I'm not joking! My advice to you is simply be yourself and speak naturally. If you change your way of speaking to please everybody, that will come across as fake, and yes the audience may boo if you sound British, but let them boo all they bloody want, at least you stayed true to yourself. Which is better - being a role-model or wearing a crown that is based on fakery?

I won't be in Nigeria when you compete, but you do have a supporter in me. Good luck!
