The cell phone is a great invention and a very useful device that gives us an unlimited access to any information we need and the possibility to connect with others. The problem is that we have become its hostages because it is as powerful as drug or alcohol addiction. Here are some disturbing statistics about it:

1. People check their phones an average of 110 times a day.

2. 56% of people check their phones before bed.

3. 77% of parents said they have argued with their teen about phone usage.

4. About 75% of people check their phones immediately after waking up.

5. 61% of people sleep with their phones next to them on their bed or under their pillow.

6. While on vacation about 44% of people check their work email.

7. 40% check their phones while in the toilet.

8. About 12% of adults use their phones in the bathroom.

9. 1 in 5 people between the ages of 18-34 admitted they've used their phones during sex.

10. 26% of car accidents are caused by phone usage.

11. 50% of teens admit to being addicted to their phones.

Now don’t assume someone will allow the plane to take off if it’s unsafe. In fact,the list of things to be checked before the flight is enormous. Still, there are minor failures that don’t affect the safety and can be dealt with later to avoid flight delays.

Why there are hand grips at the door inside the plane;
They are meant for flight attendants in the event of panic onboard. When an attendant prepares the emergency exit, panicking people can accidentally knock them down or even push them from the plane. These hand grips will help the attendant stay upright.

The captain and co-pilot are fed differently;
If one of them gets poisoned and is unable to pilot the aircraft, he will be substituted by the other one. However, this doesn’t work for all airlines.

Locks don’t protect luggage from being opened;
Hanging a lock on the zipper of your bag is useless, as it can be easily picked with a pen or pencil. This is sometimes done, damaging the zipper in the process.

Why it’s really forbidden to smoke onboard;
It’s common opinion that smoking prohibition is connected with such obvious reasons as the danger of fire and passive smoking. Still, the former is a bit doubtful — smoking was allowed before, and there were no fires. In fact, the real reason behind the ban is an economic one. The air onboard is constantly filtered, and resins and smoke wear out the equipment faster.

-It’s been held for additional checks and wasn’t loaded on time.
-Some employee, usually a novice, put the luggage on the wrong trolley, and it flew somewhere else.
-An airline employee put the wrong sticker on it by mistake.
-The passenger hadn’t removed old stickers from the luggage, which lead to confusion.
-The suitcase got stuck on the belt or went in the wrong direction, which happens during connecting flights.
-The suitcase fell off the trolley on the way to the plane and no one noticed. This, however, is rare.
-The luggage recognition system made an error or the label got lost. That’s why employees advise leaving your name and contact information where it can be seen clearly on the outside or at least inside the luggage.

A phone can hardly cause a critical malfunction of the plane — that’s a myth. But it sure can create static on the radio signal, which may not let the pilots hear important information from the dispatcher. Still, even the cabin crew sometimes ignore this rule.

Many airlines provide their employees with very cheap or sometimes even free tickets for themselves, their children, and their spouses. Generally, when an employee buys a ticket, they only pay for taxes and duties, while the flight itself is free of charge.

In Iceland, they have two alcohol related holidays: Beer Day in March, and Verslunarmannhelgi in August.

In Russia, you’ll often find that toasts are rather long and end with some sort of punch line. Also, empty glasses and bottles are almost always stored under the table rather than on it.

In Kazakhstan, they have a traditional drink called Kumis which consists of fermented horse milk. According to custom, any of the kumis that hasn’t been fully consumed must be poured back into the bottle.

In Sweden, they like to sing songs nice and loudly before and after taking shots of ‘Aquavit.’ Beer is used as a chaser after each shot.

DOPE
Dope, nowadays, is used to describe drugs, or something that is really cool. The word was originally used to describe a thick goo or lubricant in the 1800’s.

COOL
The word ‘cool’ being used as something other than a way to describe the temperature started in 1933. It is believed that the slang was used to describe something ‘fashionable’ in jazz circles. The word gained prominent popularity thanks to tenor saxophonist Lester Young.

FLY
The term ‘fly’ isn’t all that popular anymore, but boy was it big in the 80’s. It was even used back in the 1880’s and 1890’s. Back then, it meant someone who was clever and witty. It is believed that this was a reference to the fact that a fly is quick and hard to catch. In more recent years, it took on the meaning of something fashionable and cool.

TO ‘DECK’ SOMEONE
‘Deck’ is a popular term that describes punching or pushing someone with immense force. The term is said to have originated in the early 50’s as a way to describe someone hit so hard they hit the deck of a ship.

GEEK
The word ‘Geek’ started showing up in northern Britain in around 1876. It was used to describe someone who was a fool. In the 50’s, Americans started using the word to describe someone who lacks social skills or someone who ‘works too hard’ in school. Since the introduction of computers in the 80’s, ‘geek’ has also been used to describe someone who is an expert in computers.

DUDE
The term ‘dude’ has been around since the 19th century. It meant someone who was very snobby, stuck up, and particular about what he or she wears in public.

GROOVY
Although the term ‘groovy’ often is linked to the 60’s and 70’s, it originated in the 30’s. In jazz circle, ‘groovy’ described somebody who was really feeling the music while he or she was playing it. It referred to the grooves in vinyl records.

KINKY
Kinky has gone through a few changes over the years as far as what it means to the general public.It initially meant something that was ‘bendy.’ It then became a word that represented something illegal or stolen. Nowadays, we think of frisky sexual activity when we hear the word ‘kinky.’ This is thanks to Colin MacInnes and his book ‘Absolute Beginners’ published in the late 50’s.

TOP NOTCH
When something is top notch, it means that it’s really good. The term itself refers to the top mark or slit that was used to record something. It started appearing around the early 1900’s.

HAYWIRE
When something’s gone haywire, it’s gone completely out of control. The term comes from thewire used to hold together bails of hay. The wire itself used to be quite springy and hard to control.

BOOZE
Booze by definition is any potable liquid. So why does everyone imagine alcohol when we hear it? Well, the term ‘booze’ being used as a slang word can be found back in the 19th century. It is believed that the term derived from the Dutch word “busen”which means ’to drink heavily.’
