Golden Eaglets forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, is set to join English Premier League side, Manchester City. The player left having been released on Monday from the Super Eagles camp in Abuja by Stephen Keshi. Iheanacho was in camp for the Championship of African Nations billed for South Africa in January. A statement from the Eagles Media officer, Ben Alaiya, on Monday confirmed Iheanacho’s departure for England. The PUNCH however could not get a confirmation from City of any such move as at Monday night. The youngster was the Most Valuable Player at the recent FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The competition was won by Nigeria after defeating Mexico 3-0 in the final match. Keshi was quoted by Alaiya as saying that he had to approve the departure of the player after his father, James Iheanacho, personally put a call to him on Monday afternoon requesting the release of his son for the trip to England. Keshi said, “Initially a young man came declaring that he was the agent of Iheanacho, but I declined to deal with him until I hear from the family because the boy is still a minor. “It was soon after my rejection that I got a call from his father who told me that they have got travelling visa to the United Kingdom and that I should oblige him with his son’s release. I did and told the young man to go and do the nation proud at whichever club he finally chooses to settle down with.” Keshi acknowledged that Iheanacho is a talented player but also cautioned that the player should be handled gently and professionally as he navigates his professional career. The player’s transfer has been one of controversies since he made the headlines at the FIFA competition. It started with several people stepping up as agents for the player and then it was followed by different price tags placed on him. The choice of European club to join soon became a thorny issue between the player and his father such that the player left home unceremoniously with the father allegedly declaring him missing. But apart from the Iheanacho move, the Eagles also trained on Monday. The national team cancelled their second Monday training session after it appeared that the close to three hours morning training session may have taken its toll on the players. “We have to be cautious not to push the players too hard so that nobody will break down,” Keshi said. |
Mikel Obi has reflected on the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League, after Chelsea were paired to play Galatasaray on Monday. Didier Drogba who now stars for the Turkish side will return to Stamford Bridge for the first time since leaving Chelsea. The Super Eagles midfielder who spoke with Chelseafc.com said he and his teammates would not be carried away by Drogba’s return but would rather focus on beating Galatasaray and picking their full points. The tie, which sees Chelsea travel to Istanbul for the first leg, affords Blues supporters an opportunity to show their appreciation for the eight years’ service Drogba gave the club, a spell which culminated with the Ivorian winning us the Champions League in Munich with his very last kick in a Chelsea shirt Chelseafc.com reports. Mikel said yesterday that he was yet to hear from Drogba, but while understandably looking forward to facing his friend and former team- mate, stressed the importance of focusing on overcoming a side now managed by Roberto Mancini. He said, “I’m sure he will text very soon, he’s probably having a drink after seeing the draw, but it will be great to have him back. We shouldn’t get carried away about him coming back; he is a player that was here for eight years, he won major trophies, he’s a big player with a big personality. “Obviously he had to move on but Chelsea continue, we have to win games, he’s coming here with his new club, Galatasaray, who we want to beat, so we shouldn’t get carried away about him coming back, we want to win the game.” The game will be the first clash between the two sides since they met in the group stages of the 1999/2000 tournament. Chelsea won 1-0 at home and then recorded their biggest Champions League away win over in Turkey with a 5-0 victory. Galatasaray secured their place in the knockout stage courtesy of a narrow 1-0 win over Juventus in their final group game, with Wesley Sneijder scoring the crucial goal, and the Dutchman, as Mikel explained, is just one more player Chelsea will need to keep tabs on. “They are a great team. Didier, Wesley, they have a good team and obviously they have Roberto Mancini who is trying to implement his philosophy and change the way they play. “It will be tough but it’s a game we’re looking forward to. It will be good to meet old rivals, who you have played against in the past, as well as old team-mates.” Galatasaray supporters are renowned for their passionate backing and their ability to make life difficult for opposing players. Mikel is aware of the kind of atmosphere. “We know what to expect from the fans,” he explained. “They will be on top of their team and support them but it’s up to us to not listen to them and make sure we go out there and play our game.” |
The All Progressives Congress has called on the National Assembly to immediately commence the process of impeaching President Goodluck Jonathan for alleged gross misconduct. It said in a statement on Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that Jonathan’s impeachment would save Nigeria from imminent collapse. But the Presidency warned the APC and others, who it said were bent on plunging the nation into political instability, to be ready for the consequences of treasonable action. The opposition party, however, said it made the call with a high sense of responsibility and strong belief that the impeachment of the President was a legitimate constitutional option available to the National Assembly not only to protect the nation’s democracy, but to ensure its unity. It explained that it based the call for Jonathan’s impeachment on the dangerous drifting of the country. The APC added that there was a total failure of leadership, insecurity, unprecedented corruption, impunity, massive unemployment and hunger in the country. The statement reads in part, ‘’Since the raison d’etre of any government is the security and welfare of the citizenry, and the present administration has failed to live up to the justification of its existence, there can be no other definition of gross misconduct but that. “Therefore, the time has come for the head of that government, on whose desk the buck stops, to be removed through the provisions stipulated in the 1999 Constitution. This is the patriotic thing to do.” The APC warned that if the National Assembly failed to act very fast, it would share with the “clueless and feckless” Jonathan administration, the blame for dashing the hopes of millions of Nigerians, especially the youth. The party said it was necessary for anyone who might say the call for the impeachment of the President was outlandish to remember that all it would take to torpedo the current democracy was “for this increasingly-paranoid government to get a pliant judge to put a judicial stamp on just one of its litany of illegalities.” The party also wondered why the PDP could go to court to challenge the defection of five of its governors. It recalled that an attempt by the ruling party to declare the seat of the then Vice-President Atiku Abubakar vacant was rejected by the Supreme Court, when he defected to the then Action Congress of Nigeria. It wondered what could have been the motive behind the latest action of the PDP. The APC said, ‘’What then can be the sole motive behind the PDP’s action? To plunge Nigeria into chaos? This is why we issued a strong warning in our statement of December 5 in which we said, ‘We wish to state unequivocally that should the PDP go ahead with this plan, there will be widespread repercussions as the APC has resolved that, henceforth, every act of impunity of the PDP and the Presidency will be met with stiff resistance in the form of a vociferous telegraphing of people’s power, the likes of which have not been witnessed in these parts.’ “We reiterate those words today (Sunday), and make bold to say that not even the revelation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that snipers are being trained secretly and that 1,000 people have been placed on political watch, will deter us from saving this democracy, which was watered by the sweat and blood of many patriots, long before this generation of opportunists stormed the political scene.” The opposition said while Nigerians were very much aware of the failings of the Jonathan government in all sectors, it was important to remind them that the administration had, in particular, not been up to scratch in fighting corruption. The party said the government had also failed to provide jobs for Nigerian youths, even as it daily reels out phantom figures of economic growth that only serve to keep the so-called Ivy League-trained officials in charge of the economy on their jobs. The APC added, “The talk out there now is that Nigeria has never had it so bad. But the government may not know because it has distanced itself from the people. “Therefore, for embracing corruption so much and providing succour to corrupt public officials, for threatening the country’s fragile unity through divisive policies and politics, for frittering away the nation’s resources through unprecedented cronyism and clannishness, and for a total failure of leadership, this President deserves to be slammed with the cudgel of impeachment.’’ When contacted, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, said the Senate was not aware of the call for the President’ s impeachment by the APC “I can only react to issues and matters before the Senate that have been concluded. No letter or motion has been brought before the Senate on the issue,” he said. But the Presidency, in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, dismissed the call as opportunistic, partisan and ill-motivated. “The Presidency warns that the APC and any person who make themselves its willing tools for the breach of public order and safety will be made to face the full sanctions of the law. Those who are threatening fire and brimstone should be ready for the consequences of treasonable action,” it said. It advised Nigerians to distinguish between reckless violations of civic duty and the urgent need to protect the integrity of the nation against those who for selfish reasons had declared their readiness to stop at nothing. While describing the call as reckless and irresponsible, the Presidency warned that the Federal Government would not standby and let the nation be plunged into unnecessary political instability. The statement reads in part, “We have noted with utter disdain, the reckless and irresponsible call by the APC on Sunday for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan. “Ordinarily, we would not have dignified Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s latest vituperations in the service of his paymasters with a response, but we thought it necessary to warn that the Federal Government will not standby idly and let the nation be plunged into unnecessary crises and political instability because of the desperation and apparent readiness of the APC spokesman and his gang of power-seeking desperadoes to sacrifice the well-being of the country on the altar of their selfish personal ambitions. “The Presidency totally condemns the decision by Alhaji Mohammed and his party to move further beyond the bounds of honourable and acceptable political conduct with the senseless call for the impeachment of a President who continues to sincerely devote himself to the discharge of the sacred mandate freely given to him by Nigerians. “The APC, which remains a minority party with doubtful credentials in the National Assembly, knows fully well that its attempt to hector and blackmail a parliament dominated by loyal members of the President’s party, the PDP, into an impeachment process, will come to nothing. “But it has cavalierly embarked on this outrageous gambit, with scant regard for peace, order, security and political stability in the country in furtherance of its dastardly and heinous strategy of over-heating the polity and working to cause public disaffection against the Jonathan Presidency with lies, false accusations and unjustifiable indictments ahead of the 2015 general elections.” The Presidency said it considered it deplorable that the APC had in its Machiavellian desperation recklessly assailed the integrity and honour of the judiciary. It added, “We have noted the undisguised threat by the APC to foster public insurrection against the Federal Government if pending legal cases go against it. “We dismiss the APC’s call for the President’s impeachment as opportunistic, partisan and ill- motivated.” The PDP also described the call by the APC as “irresponsible, malicious and self-seeking.” “The call is part of the plan by the APC to truncate this democracy and we will not allow it, ” the PDP spokesperson, Chief Olisa Metuh, said. He added, “The APC had planned to cause mayhem during the governorship election in Anambra State, but God did not allow that to happen. “Its members want to engineer turmoil and breakdown of law and order in the country. They know that they cannot win the 2015 general elections because Nigerians have rejected them.” Metuh asked Nigerians to be wary of the activities of the members of the opposition party. He also called on them to hold the opposition party responsible for any breakdown of law and order in the country. |
Scores of angry youths on Saturday went on the rampage in Ayetoro, Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State, following an alleged assault on the Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba Azeez Adelakun, by 10 village heads, popularly called baales . The youths also took to the streets on Sunday and prevented the opening of the market in the town, while other businesses were forced to close shops. The baales allegedly beat up Adelakun, cutting the traditional royal beads off his neck over a chieftaincy disagreement. The fracas between the baales and the monarch was said to have occurred at the palace while Adelakun was making preparations to install the new village head of Ago-Imala, Chief Olayiwola Ajibola, a move which the village heads allegedly opposed. Our correspondent learnt that there had been a tension between the baales and the monarch over his installation of two village heads in the Saala community, which boiled over on Saturday when Adelakun moved to formalise Ajibola’s headship of Ago-Imala community. A resident, who pleaded anonymity, explained that the village heads had requested a meeting with the Oba. He said, “When the monarch entered his palace for the meeting, the aggrieved baales refused to pay him the traditional homage and instead told him that they no longer recognise him as the traditional ruler of the town. “One of the baales moved to forcibly remove the royal beads from the monarch, but his (monarch) resistance led to the fracas in the palace. The baale beat him up.” It was learnt that some youths of the community learnt of the assault on the monarch, they rushed to the palace and descended on some of the baales, who were still in the palace. PUNCH Metro was told that the state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, later led his men to restore normalcy in the area. Our correspondent, who visited the town at about 2.00pm on Saturday, observed bonfire made by the aggrieved youth, who protested the alleged assault on the monarch. At the Orile Saala Road residence of the monarch, our correspondent was told that the monarch had lost his voice allegedly due to the assault. However, the Baale of Ayinbo-Ayetoro, Chief Ezekiel Ogundele, who spoke on behalf of the embattled monarch, alleged that his aggrieved colleagues had planned to dethrone Adelakun. Ogundele said, “They said Kabiyesi disgraced them in Abeokuta and they will retaliate by removing him as the king of the town. There are two baales in Saala and the baales wanted the two offices merged, but Kabiyesi disagreed, saying he was the one that installed both of them. “This did not go down well with the aggrieved baales who vowed to deal with the Kabiyesi by removing him. “When the baales got to the palace, they did not pay homage and when the monarch asked them why they failed to pay the homage they said the Kabiyesi had been removed as the king. They were about 10 in number. “Some of them tore the traditional beads of the king and beat him up. All of them had held a meeting where they planned on how to attack the king and they acted the script. As they were beating the Kabiyesi, the Kabiyesi urged his people not to touch them. Later the police came and took them away.” The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, said that 19 Baales were involved in the crisis. Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, added that only one person was injured in the violence. He said, “ Baale Keesan assaulted the monarch by removing the beads from the king. The youth in the area reacted, but the prompt intervention of policemen saved the day and only one person was injured. “The Olu of Ilaro and Yewa Traditional council have intervened. So, there is no need of arrest. The Olu of Ilaro has intervened and normalcy has been restored in the area.” |
