It is with a heavy heart that we reflect upon the multiple pleas made by Mohbad regarding the constant threats to his life, which unfortunately went unanswered before his untimely demise. As Nigerians, it is disheartening that we find ourselves in a position where we lack the necessary rights and power to effectively address such issues. The average youth, regardless of their level of popularity, inadvertently lives in a state of constant fear, particularly in the aftermath of the government's deployment of soldiers to brutally suppress innocent protesters on October 20, 2020. Even someone like Mohbad, who transcended the classification of an "average youth," was subjected to mistreatment and dehumanization. It is deeply troubling that the police, who are employed to safeguard the lives of citizens, were fully aware of his situation but were unable or unwilling to intervene and protect him. This echoes the treatment of junior officers within the police force, as exemplified by the case of Corporal Fauziyyah, who was jailed and threatened she attempted to resign from the police force. The crux of the matter lies in our call for involvement from individuals who possess popularity, wealth, and connections. However, we must also acknowledge that their connections are often tied to the very tyrants we are up against. This presents a complex dilemma, as seeking assistance from these influential figures may inadvertently perpetuate the cycle of power and corruption. As a society, we must confront these challenges head-on. We need to demand accountability from our leaders and push for systemic changes that protect the rights and lives of every citizen, regardless of their social status. It is crucial that we create an environment where individuals are not silenced or persecuted for speaking out against injustice. Only through collective action and a steadfast commitment to justice can we hope to overcome the obstacles that hinder progress and threaten the lives of our fellow Nigerians. Rest in peace Imole 🕯 |
