Kolapo Olusola, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the recent governorship election in Ekiti, has challenged the result of the poll won by Kayode Fayemi. Olusola, current deputy governor of the state, filed a petition at the Ekiti election petition tribunal on Friday, kicking against the result as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Fayemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 197,459 votes while the PDP candidate had 178,121 votes, a margin of 19,338. Olusola asked the tribunal to declare him the authentic winner of the poll, on the ground that the exercise was “marred” by various irregularities including intimidation and use of force. The PDP had earlier said it would challenge the result of the election in court. The party accused the APC of using “federal might” to intimidate voters and their supporters during the exercise. The Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in the recently held governorship election in Ekiti State, has voiced out his frustration about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) inability to oblige him with the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the July 14, 2018, poll. Drawing from the statement of the gubernatorial candidate who posited that he had requested and paid for the Certified True Copies of the results, both at the state branch of INEC and the national headquarters, it is disheartening and disappointing that INEC is yet to make the Certified True Copies of the results available to him almost two week after the announcement of the result. If INEC could compile or collate the results of all the electoral polling booths, units, wards, councils, zones and finally to the state level within 24 or 48 hours to announce the result, what could be holding INEC from releasing the Certified True Copies to contestants or petitioners two weeks after the announcement of the result? INEC seems to constitute the worst challenge to free, fair and credible election in Nigeria, especially since 2015. INEC is supposed to be an unbiased arbiter or referee in issues that concern election, but regrettable, recent experiences had brought to the fore the partisanship of INEC. INEC, as an institution or agency of government, has a constitutional role to play as specified by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act. A situation whereby a contestant of a political party registered by INEC is contesting an election with INEC as an opponent instead of other political parties wherein INEC ought to be the referee is very dangerous to democracy. It is akin to Nigeria’s Super Eagles playing against Argentina in which the referee is an Argentine. INEC should not lay a very dangerous precedent or template because no government will last forever. Professor Olusola paid to INEC to have access to the Certified True Copies of an election INEC declared its result almost two weeks ago, yet INEC is prevaricating to grant him his request. Is INEC trying to doctor the result? Does it mean INEC announced an unprepared result? This same thing happened during the gubernatorial election in Edo State in 2017. I dare say that INEC will also apply the same template in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun State. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act make it mandatory for a petitioner to file his /her petition within 21 days after the announcement of the result. If the Constitution and the Electoral Act could limit the time frame for filing of election petition, it has become expedient for the both chambers of the National Assembly to amend the Constitution and the Electoral Act with a view to compelling INEC to make the Certified True Copies of election results available to contestants or petitioners NOT later than Seven days after the announcement of the result. This is to enable a petitioner use the remaining 14 days to study the results and file his/her petition to the Election Petition Tribunal. A situation whereby a petitioner has not received the Certified True Copies 14 days after the announcement of the result as lamented by Prof. Olusola limits him to only seven days to study the voluminous results and file his petition to the Election Petition Tribunal. From my cursory observation, the pattern INEC used in Edo State is what it is using in Ekiti State now. The PDP candidate in Edo State gubernatorial election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu lamented about INEC’s deliberate delay in granting him access to the Certified True Copies of the results, and INEC only released the results to him few days to the expiration of the mandatory 21 days to file his petition thereby limiting his time to study the results. His petition failed largely due to time constraint to file a comprehensive petition. The same method is being re-enacted in Ekiti State. INEC should not make itself a political party or on interested party in an election it superintends over. INEC is funded with tax payers’ money and should be an unbiased arbiter. The relevant committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives should strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by limiting the time frame for INEC to make available the Certified True Copies of results to contestants, which I suggest should not be more than seven days after the announcement of the result. Nigeria’s democracy will keep moving around in vicious circle if INEC does not wean itself of partisanship or dancing to the tunes of the government in power. The precedent or template this present INEC is setting may be used against the present beneficiaries tomorrow if an evil one is set. The onus is on the National Assembly to quickly amend the Constitution and the Electoral Act to check INEC’s indefinite time frame to make available the Certified True Copies to petitioners and contestants, especially as 2019 general election approaches. ©guardian.ng https://www.google.com/amp/s/guardian.ng/opinion/between-ekiti-pdp-gubernatorial-candidate-and-inecs-frustration/amp |
One person was reportedly shot Saturday, as the celebration of Odun Oba and Olosunta traditional festivals in Ikere Ekiti, Ekiti State which commenced Friday night turned violent. The Ogoga, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado’s Odun Oba Festival which reached its peak on Saturday with paying of homage and celebration of the New Yam coincided with the Olosunta Festival celebrated by Olukere, Ganiyu Ayodele Obasoyin, which started same day. The Odo Oja area of the town has been taken over by Soldiers, mobile policemen and men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to prevent outbreak of law and order. The two monarchs are accusing one another of the cause of the violence which continued till early hours of Saturday. Ogoga alleged, that the Oloris (palace queens) were on Friday, attacked by Olukere’s thugs wounding some of them during a traditional dance to some locations in the town. Olukere alleged that security men working for Ogoga stormed his (Olukere’s) palace at about 1.00 am on Saturday shooting sporadically. Obasoyin also alleged that the billboard mounted in Odo Oja area to advertise the Olosunta Festival was vandalized by Alagbado’s loyalists. According to him, “Ogoga’s security men shot one of my boys, Oladimeji Aluko, he was rushed to the hospital for treatment. “I am indoors because the Olosunta Festival commenced today (Saturday). Information reached me that they invaded my palace and were firing gunshots. “When they could not find me, they went to my private residence in Ado where they were resisted but they also shot somebody there. “We found eight to ten pellets on the ground from their gunshots and we have informed the Commissioner of Police. “I don’t have any problem with Ogoga, all I am demanding from the state government is my staff of office because I am king in this community, they should give me my right.” But Oba Alagbado said “There is a thug who called himself Olukere, Ganiyu Obasoyin. He is an impostor because he was not approved by the prescribed authority, the Ogoga. “Yesterday (Friday), all the oloris danced from the palace to the Post Office area, the land belongs to the Aladeselu family. “Obasoyin and his thugs attacked the women there shooting guns on the day ‘Opekele Ayaba.’ His thugs seized their two cameras, destroyed their drums and some old women fainted, the local trumpeter was attacked. “Ikere has only one Oba, the Ogoga, Odo Oja is headed by Ologotun Obasoyin has been constituting himself as a nuisance in this town. “He is on bail on a murder charge and there is a law in Ekiti State that anybody that calls himself an Oba without the authority of the government is three years imprisonment without any option of fine. “I want peace in Ikere, my kingdom because how can we be celebrating our festival with so many police and security men around when we are not in a state of war. “Nobody can be a chief in this town without my approval. Who owns this town? Can you divide my town for me? We are waiting for the current Police regime to do their job.” When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, Caleb Ikechukwu, could not be reached for comments as his phone was switched off and was yet to respond to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report. © today.ng |

While speaking on Tuesday during plenary on the floor of the senate, the nation’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki, narrated his experience in the hands of security operatives, who laid siege in his house. Speaking on the siege on his home and that of his deputy, Saraki said the plenary would not have held if not for his preparation. According to him, he said; “The road leading to my place was cordoned off and all cars coming in and out as early as 6:30 were being stopped and you have to come down. “My convoy was stopped from moving. Given something that one was prepared for, I had my own car too. So the deputy senate president called me and said he could not come here. “And as you are all aware, very late yesterday, at about 8 p.m., I received a letter asking me to report to the police on a case of this Offa robbery which had been concluded before now. “That’s the situation why the DSP could not come here and I was already going somewhere else. If not, this plenary would not have been able to hold today. So I had to come here.” Saraki condemned the siege saying it was God that made him escape it. He said; “But as you all rightly said, if one of our colleagues cannot come out for no fault of his, I don’t see how we can continue to sit and ignore the fact that a presiding officer cannot be here. “And if it was by the plan, I too, would not be here. It was just by the intervention of the almighty God that I was able to get myself here.” The senate president eventually presided over the Senate and announced the defection of 15 senators away from the APC. Saraki was, however, not among those that defected. © gqbuzz.com |
