On Monday, Boko Haram extremists raided a village in Borno state near the border with Niger, killing 7 people, community leaders said. Dozens of gunmen stormed Awonori, a farming and herding village near the fishing town of Damasak, and carted away food supplies and livestock, they said.

“They killed seven people, looted grains and took away all the livestocks in the village before fleeing into the bush,” Muhammadu Modu Wan-Wan, head of the Damasak fishermen’s union.

“The gunmen who came in vans and on motorcycles around 7:00 am (0600 GMT) besieged the village and opened fire on residents as they were having breakfast before moving to their farms,” he said.

Wan-Wan said the attack forced the villagers to flee but they returned after the assailants had left. Abubakar Gamandi, the head of Borno’s fishermen’s union, confirmed the attack.

“I received report from my members in the Damasak area that Boko Haram gunmen attacked Awonori village this morning where they killed seven people and took away food and livestocks,” he said.

During the weekend, a Claretian priest of the Catholic Church was murdered in Owerri, Imo state.
The priest, whose full identity could not be ascertained at press time, was an academic staff of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, he said the priest was murdered by assassins on a bush path.
Enwerem said:

“The police are suspecting that it was a clear case of assassination. The priest was gruesomely murdered along a very lonely bush path that would have led him into Port Harcourt Road.”

While noting that whatever happened to the priest might be connected with the bickering and happenings in Imo Polytechnic, Enwerem, however, wondered why the Catholic priest chose to use such a lonely bush path.

The bodies of the remaining two persons missing from Wednesday’s Bristow helicopter crash in Lagos State have been recovered by the search and rescue team, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.

A correspondent of NAN who was at the crash site at the back of Oworoshoki Police Station reported that the bodies, recovered at about 10.25 a.m. on Thursday, were that of a white man and a black man.

The bodies were brought to the shore of the lagoon at 10.45 a.m.

Sources said the white man was the helicopter’s pilot while the black man was the co-pilot.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta said Sunday night that it has arrested six suspected pirates behind the attack that killed four of its soldiers and a policemen in Nembe, Bayelsa State, and also confiscated a weapons cache.

According to a statement issued on Sunday night in Yenagoa by Lt. Col. Isa Ado, a JTF spokesman, the troops destroyed a militant camp during the raid.

“JTF in a swift reaction to the 7 August 2015 attack on the JTF troops along Nembe Community in Bayelsa State has carried out a cordon and search operation in suspected militant camps responsible for the attack at Ke Community in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

A nurse, identified as Adebola Titilayo, has been arrested by police detectives attached to Ewekoro Division of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly stealing a ‎new born baby.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, made available to the Tribune Online, on Sunday, the suspect was said to have operated a private ‎hospital in Arogun village and committed the alleged offence after taking delivery of the baby boy.

According to the statement, the suspect deceived the parents of the new born baby that the baby was dead during delivery in the said hospital.

Police in Ogun state will henceforth shoot armed cultists and “ritualists” at sight, the state command announced Thursday.

The commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, gave the order shortly after parading 23 suspected criminals at the State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, saying that the command will not tolerate ‎the rising cases of cultism and ritual killings.

He said the shoot-at-sight order will not amount to extra-judicial killing because the intention of armed criminals is either to kill or maim.

An Abuja-based group, Centre for Crisis Communication, said on Tuesday that some Boko Haram elements have approached it for dialogue as a way of ending the seeming intractable insurgency in the country, particularly in the North-East.

Unknown men have burnt down the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State.

According to an eye-witnesses, the incident, which occurred at 1.00p.m. yesterday, razed the whole building, including the store and Electoral Officer’s office and others.

A woman, Adenike, stabbed one of the robbers who came into her house to death.The robbers who were armed with knives and cutlasses, reportedly gained entrance into the house by damaging the gates.

Adenike was said to have drag the knife from the robber, Iginla, during a struggle, stabbed him in the stomach, after which the robber lost balance and fell from the two-stored building.

Neighbors, who learnt of the robbery, were said to have called the police from the Adeniji Adele Division. The other suspected robbers reportedly escaped after the police got to the area.

Iginla who was rushed to the Lagos island general hospital by the policemen later died on Thursday while Adenike was taken to a private hospital by her family.

A resident who anonymity, said Iginla’s girlfriend showed up to know where her beau was being treated so she could tend to him but the police declined.
