Seoul is extraordinary but South Korea doesn't stop there. For nearly four years I spent almost every weekend getting out of the city and exploring what the rest of the country had to offer. I traveled with Seoul Hiking Group, with Bangawoyo Tours, and eventually started leading groups myself once I knew the routes well enough. The country is small enough that a surprising amount is reachable in a weekend and large enough in its variety that I never ran out of places to go. Here's where to head when you're ready to leave Seoul behind for a few days. Sokcho and Seoraksan National Park Sokcho is a coastal city in the northeast corner of South Korea and my favorite city outside of Seoul. It sits right at the doorstep of Seoraksan National Park, which I visited over a dozen times and consider the best national park in Korea. The combination of a night in Sokcho followed by a full day in Seoraksan is one of the best itineraries the country has to offer. Sokcho itself has a fish market, beachside fireworks in season, and a jimjilbang— the traditional Korean sauna and bathhouse — that is the perfect way to recover after a long day on the trail. After hiking Seoraksan's Dinosaur Ridge, a grueling 13-mile loop that destroys your legs and rewards you with views you won't forget, the jimjilbang is not optional. It's medicinal. Busan: Beaches, Fish Markets, and the Culture Village Busan is South Korea's second city and a worthy destination in its own right. It has beaches, a famous fish market, a lively party scene, and Gimhae International Airport if you want to fly in or out rather than going through Seoul. I always took the bus from Seoul, which is comfortable and affordable, though the high-speed train is another good option. Most travel guides will send you to Busan's fish market, and they're right to. But my less traditional recommendation is Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside neighborhood of brightly painted houses with murals, art installations, and sweeping views of the city below. It's the kind of place that rewards slow walking and gets better the more you wander into it. Jinhae in Spring: Cherry Blossoms Worth the Crowd If you're in Korea in spring, Jinhae is worth the trip even though it will be crowded. The cherry blossom festival here rivals Japan and Washington DC in scale and beauty. The train depot and the stream running through town are lined with cherry trees and during peak bloom the whole city transforms. For some breathing room away from the festival crowds, Jehwangsan offers a good hike with a view over the city. The naval port is a more unusual side trip that gives Jinhae a different character from Korea's other spring destinations. Go for the blossoms, stay for the town. The Islands: Korea's Most Underrated Destinations South Korea has an extensive network of ferries and bridges connecting hundreds of islands along its southern and western coasts. Most visitors never make it to any of them. That's their loss and your opportunity. The ferry terminal in Tongyeong is the gateway to some of the best. Saryangdo has a ridge hike that front-loads the elevation gain and then rewards you with miles of panoramic views over the Korean coastline. I loved it enough to go back twice. Bijindo is a smaller island with sandy beaches on either side of a narrow spit of land — I called it 'a hint of Thailand' after my first visit and liked it enough to return. It has places to stay and eat right by the beach, making it a genuine overnight destination rather than a rushed day trip. Muuido is the easiest island to reach since you can drive there from Seoul or Incheon without taking a ferry. It has a sandy beach with a gentle slope and if you time your visit for sunset at low tide, the light on the exposed sand flats creates a scene that feels like a different planet entirely. Jeju Island: Korea's Hawaii No list of Korean destinations is complete without Jeju. Often called the Hawaii of Korea, this subtropical island has beaches, volcanic landscapes, and Hallasan National Park at its center — a dormant shield volcano and the highest peak in South Korea. The island has a distinct culture and dialect from the mainland and a relaxed pace that feels genuinely different from Seoul's energy. Jeju is popular with Korean honeymooners and domestic tourists, which means it can be busy, but it's large enough that you can find quieter corners if you look for them. Flying from Seoul takes about an hour and is usually inexpensive if you book ahead. How to Get Around Korea's intercity bus system is affordable, comfortable, and reaches just about everywhere. From central Seoul, you can spend a morning visiting one of the city's historic palaces via subway and still make an afternoon KTX departure to Busan — the whole journey takes under three hours once you're on the train."The high-speed KTX train connects Seoul to Busan and other major cities quickly. For the islands, ferries are the only option and schedules can be affected by weather, so always build a buffer day into island trips if you can.
