RAWLINGS WANTS GLOBAL ACTION ON NIGERIA’S LOOT • Urges West to return stolen funds Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings has canvassed a global campaign for the return of Nigeria’s stolen funds stashed away in developed countries. According to him, the international community should spearhead the initiative in a manner similar to that for the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls. Rawlings, who spoke to The Guardian in Ghana on the outcome of the recent high-level London Conference on Corruption, charged developed countries to pay more than lip-service to the return of the funds to Nigeria and some other countries. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated that those who looted the common treasury would not know peace unless they returned what they stole as the administration would continue to turn the heat on them. Rawlings said: “The high-level London conference on corruption offers an opportunity not only for countries in Africa and the developing world to revise and enhance their strategies for combating corruption, but also for developed countries whose banks have served as a safe haven for stolen wealth from Africa and elsewhere to repatriate those funds. “I also implore the international community to join the chorus for the return of the loot, especially to a country like Nigeria while she enjoys the leadership of a proven man of integrity.” He took a swipe at the developed countries who organise anti-corruption workshops with no concrete action to address issues that concern them.“Let us stop this support and mere conference of words and follow up with serious deeds. The commitment to corruption should work both ways. Developed countries cannot continue to harbour illegally-acquired funds from Africa and expect the latter to successfully stem the source of corruption. “If we could transmit the integrity from our culture and various languages into the Western language and behaviour we’ve adopted, we could end up restoring the needed level of integrity to create a more civilised behaviour. In other words, we will be restoring integrity and credibility back to the spoken word.” “Let me speak about these characters corrupting us and sending our loot into their economies as part and parcel of their capitalist programme. When you begin to speak up, they get nervous. They resent and they don’t like nationalists, pan- Africanists. When the time comes, they would sacrifice you and keep your loot. “Let’s put pressure on those African governments to bring those stolen monies out. Obama and his friends should give them sleepless nights just like the way we handled the Chibok girls’ issue. Let’s go beyond roundtable meetings. The Commonwealth should be made to serve a better purpose. This calls for a loud noise. “From London to Switzerland, they are holding on to these stolen monies with impunity. More pressure is needed from all angles. Obama, the whole lot of them should pitch in and not do what they are doing in South America, in Brazil. Some of us can see through it. “When they have leaders with socialist inclinations, they would want to rout them out of office the way it is happening over there. No, that is not good enough. We can see through it. It is a pity.” Rawlings, who is regarded as an anti-corruption crusader, also reviewed the level of morality in African society and prescribed lie detector tests for courtrooms. His words: “Attaching lie detector tests to courthouses could go a long way in restoring the culture of truthfulness, justice and social stability. Time and money would be saved adjudicating on the issues. “If only lie detector machines could be attached to the lying mouths of some of these so-called professional journalists and commentators, our society would stay focused and the lift-off in the society will also become inevitable. Any loss of lift will not undermine the stability of our society.” Buhari made the appeal to looters of public funds yesterday when he received a delegation of residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) who came to pay him the traditional Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The President added: “Please tell those with plenty of money which does not belong to them to try and negotiate and return it in peace, so that both they and us will be in peace, otherwise we will continue to look for it and they won’t know any peace.” -Guardian

21 Facts About Dangote’s Refinery and Petrochemical Plant 1. Over $4 billion worth of equipment currently sits on the site. 2. The project is slated to cost $14 billion (N2.8 trillion) of which Dangote is contributing $7 billion in equity. 3. The project site is larger than Victoria Island. It is located on 2135 hectares of land in Epe, Lagos near the Lekki Free Zone 4. It is the largest industrial complex in Africa 5. Work goes on, on the site, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 6. World Record 2.72 million accident free hours recorded on site, without a single lost time to injuries 7. It is the largest single train grass roots refinery in the world with a processing capacity of 650,000 BPSD 8. Dangote Group brought in the world’s #1, #2, and #5 sand dredgers to sand fill the site. 60% of the land being swampy. So far these dredgers have reclaimed 13 million m³ out of 30 million m³ 9. During construction, the project will employ over 25,000 Nigerians 10. Dangote is investing over $7 billion (N1.4 trillion) in the project 11. It is the largest single train refinery project on the planet 12. When this project comes online, Nigeria will save a minimum of $10 billion a year on imports 13. The Ammonia component of the plant will produce 2.8 million tonnes of Urea 14. Dangote is producing its own electricity to power the plant and by so doing is saving 75% costs. Dangote produces electricity at a rate that is significantly cheaper than the Federal Government. Dangote’s cost is $400,000/MW, while Federal Government is $2,000,000/MW 15. All the civil engineering is done by Nigerian companies 16. The plant has an export value of $6 billion per annum, meaning Dangote’s efforts will increase the amount of foreign exchange in Nigeria’s foreign reserves by at least 40% of current value on a yearly basis 17. Dangote said when this project comes on line, his friend Femi Otedola will save at least N26 per litre on millions of litres of diesel and petrol which his companies import annually. This savings will be passed on to the consumers and it will take a lot of pressure off the banks 18. Billions of Naira were paid to acquire the land and to settle the existing communities. More money was also allocated and spent to relocate the existing communities 19. This project will restore the dignity of Nigeria, a crude producing country that has for years gone abroad to meet its demand for refined products 20. Refined products to be produced at the plant include but is not limited to propane, petrol, Jet Fuel, Diesel, Kerosene, Carbon Black, Polypropylene, Polyethylene 21. The United States Trade and Development Agency is supporting this project with $997 million.

The history of Lekki Peninsula and what you should know Since her grand introduction into the Lagos metropolis, Lekki has become a haven for the high and mighty. Lekki Peninsula is an area on the Lagos Island in Nigeria which contains expensive residential suburbs that throws poverty into the Atlantic Ocean. The Peninsula adjoins the commercial Victoria Island district and the residential Ikoyi area. It has got a reputation as an area with the most expensive real estate assets in the world yet the irony of this is that Lekki was once a deadly shanty town. Lekki was formerly known as Maroko, a slum inhabited by poor people, before it was destroyed by the then Raji Rasaki led State Military Government in Lagos. Some of the inhabitants of Lekki don’t know the history of that area, so I guess it will be rewarding to take them through memory lane. Some twenty five years ago, families resident in Maroko then a suburb of Lagos, were evicted from their homes ostensibly to save them from slum-related diseases and avoidable death. People of extreme low class dwellings were kicked out of their homes by heavily armed soldiers under the watch of Colonel Raji Rasaki who was supervised by then Military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babaginda. The eviction script in the early hours of July 14, 1990 was executed with military precision and, with no intent to take prisoners. But the soldiers in their late teens were emboldened by lack of resistance from the terrified women and children to wreak havoc, blowing off roofs, kicking down doors, taking women and girls against their will like in real war scenario. It may have been their first opportunity to engage in official violence and, a rite of passage for them to lose their innocence. Families ran everywhere looking to connect members who sprang from sleep to escape the devastation. They sustained varying degrees of injury from flying roofing sheets while others drowned in uncovered wells they did not know were in their flight path. That once murky place is today known as Lekki and all that history thrown down the drain with the name Maroko. The Lekki Sub-Region comprises a naturally formed peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean East of Lagos City and on Lagos Lagoon. It is a rapidly growing area on the coast. Its sandy beaches, including Lekki/Eleko Beach and Oso Lekki Backwaters, and relics of Brazilian/Portuguese and other imposing architecture make it a tourism goldmine. Housing in Lekki is usually in blocks of adjoining flats. Most homes are furnished with running water and electricity. A standard three-bedroom flat rents for N900,000-N2.5 million per annum. The area is poorly served by buses and taxis as most residents have their own car. Due to its proximity to the Epe Bridge and the Lagos/Sagamu/Benin expressway, Lekki is also the gateway to southeast Nigeria. The popular Ilasan market, otherwise known as Lekki market by expatriates, sells fruit, vegetables, art and artifacts from Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. However, prices are generally higher here than in other parts of the city. The Anap Ranch at kilometre 42 on Epe Expressway sells imported Dutch stock meat (a brand of imported beef), excellent ground beef, bone/rib steaks and rump roast. Lekki also has a seaside pleasure garden and water sports. There are two phases in the Lekki vicinity, which are Lekki phase I and Lekki phase II. Lekki phase I is considered to be one of the most expensive places to live in Lagos state. This is due to the housing developments which are being created on the Lekki phase I axis. It has been predicted by many that the Lekki peninsula vicinity will soon become the best area to live and work in Lagos. Due to the extensive construction going on at Lekki, major destruction of the remaining pristine swamps and little wildlife habitats left in Lagos state has occurred. The only place where any conservation of nature is found is at the Lekki Conservation center, run by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) is one of Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) foremost conservation project site located on the renowned Lekki Peninsula. LCC covers a land area of 78 hectare. Administratively, LCC is situated in Eti Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State. The Lekki Conservation Centre, LCC is a conservation initiative to protect wildlife found in southwest coastal environment of Nigeria in the face of sprawling urban development. This 21-year-old conservation education centre has continued to attract both local and international interests. The Centre has served, as an education and resource centre to varieties of group’s majority of which are schools and tourists. The project has promoted environmental protection and worked against poaching by surrounding communities as well as serve as a tourist centre for local and international visitors. Continuous environmental education, awareness creation and research activities are carried out in the Reserve. Asides the traffic, what I notice whenever I go to Lekki is the never ending construction works. What is obtainable these days is that we have a lot of Lagosians working in Victoria Island but live in Lekki. The continual commercialisation of Victoria Island, which used to be very residential, has made that inevitable. Plus Lekki does have some of the best properties in Nigeria. Imagine an area designated for global companies to trade without taxation. An area which will include a new international air and sea port, light railway and natural parks. Lekki is essentially a new city development, which is designed to create millions of jobs, ease the chronic congestion at present in Lagos state and provide residential accommodation to the growing upper and middle class citizens of the state Do you know "as a low or middle income earner, you can acquire a property in Lekki.
