Just did my B1/B2 visa interview with my wife at the American Embassy Abuja today @7:30am appointment time.
Am happy to inform the house that our visa was approved.
The embassy is not for the faint hearted. There were plenty of denials like 100 denials to 1 approval. it's not entirely the fault of the embassy as many men and women (old and young)came highly unprepared. guys please be prepared. Kindly check out ZF Visa and Argo on YouTube. Their videos were more than useful as they really helped us to know how to answer all the questions thrown at us. Thank you Nairaland travel section too and our wonderful guys who are always willing to help out with the questions.
Prayer is a major major factor too trust me.
Please note that for those who need to update your DS 160, do not stress yourself as that will be done at the embassy. we did not complete our DS -160 on the old portal, but it was sorted at the embassy as our new DS-160 form was uploaded before our interview.
We were interviewed by a young, sweet african American lady. Here is our visa interview transcript:
V.O passport please

Us: Sure Here they are.

V.O : what's the purpose of your trip

Us: My wife and I are planning to go Miami florida on a cruise ship vacation with the royal carribean specifically "freedom of the seas" ship which will set sail from the port of miami to Cococay Bahamas, down to Nassau Bahamas and back to miami. We also intend to visit some interesting places like the everglades national park,little Havana and miami beach

V.O: how long have you been married

Us: 8 years

V.O: Have you travelled before as a couple

US: we have to Mauritius on vacation, I have also gone to the U.K and my wife has been to Dubai

V.O: what year?

US: 2016

V.O: how long is your vacation

US: 8 days

V.O How long is the cruise vacation and where is the ship sailing to?

US: the cruise vacation is 4 days and I repeated where the ship is sailing to.

V.O: Do you have kids

US: 2 kids

V.O : are the teenagers?

US: we told her their ages

V.O: who will take care of them while you are on vacation

US: My mother inlaw

V.O hold on I will be right back
she was away for 2 minutes

V.O: will you be seeking medical attention inthe U.S

US: No

V.O i will be approving your visa. you will be sent an email on when to collect your passport.
she then hands us a white paper.

Thank you guys God will do it for all of us.
P.S Do not overstay when you are granted the visa as many 221g people were denied based on that.

In this case you mentioned hmm I doubt if it’s not automatic refusal. What I notice they are trying to do is make sure you fill once and you fill right. No story changing so if you are filling make sure you understand what you fill and what you are doing. If not it’s gone and I don’t think they will allow upgrading of DS160 again because of this appointment stuff agent messed it up. And people buying the date.

In your case did you give them the Confirmed page of your DS 160 or they just used your passport and appointment letter to scan.

They use this method of no updating of DS160 to deal with agent who sell dates. They can’t update for their clients who they sell date for.

what if the DS 160 was not filled on the old portal, but the number was generated from ustraveldocs.(Old portal). I don't think there will be any record for them to even look at in the first place,except they just want to set an example with applicants as you have opined.
Let's hope they keep improving their processes.

what about those of us that did not complete or submit the first DS 160 on the old website. We had to fill a new DS 160,unfortunately there is no room for update on the new website. I just pray things will go well for us.

That is thesame problem I have plus the fact that Avits cancelled me and my wife's interview appointment for next month. A colleague of mine has thesame challenge and his own appointment is on Friday this week. Am hoping he's sorted out at the embassy, as this will give me great hope.
