Science/TechnologyWait… Nigerians Can Actually Verify Electricity Bills Like This? by JohnOFaleke(op): 9:14pm On May 18
For months, I kept seeing the same complaints everywhere:

“NEPA overbilled me.”
“My token units reduced.”
“This bill doesn’t make sense.”

But most people actually don’t know HOW electricity bills are calculated or what they’re even being charged for.

So I built something called WATT?.

It’s a Nigerian electricity bill auditing platform that helps users:

⚡ Verify electricity bills using NERC/MYTO tariff structures
⚡ Check Band classifications
⚡ Estimate expected token units
⚡ Understand billing breakdowns
⚡ Generate dispute letters where necessary

The goal wasn’t to attack DisCos.

The goal was simple:
Make electricity billing easier for everyday Nigerians to understand.

I’m still a student, so this started mostly from curiosity, frustration, and my exposure to the power sector during SIWES.

Over time, it became a real platform now used by Nigerians to audit bills and better understand electricity charges.

You can try it here:

I’d genuinely love feedback, corrections, and suggestions from people in both the energy sector and everyday consumers.

Many Nigerians living in rented apartments are paying electricity bills that are higher than what NERC actually approved. Some landlords know this. Some don’t. Either way, you are the one losing money every month.

Here is how it works:
NERC sets the official price per kWh for your area based on your tariff band. Landlords and DisCos are not supposed to charge above this rate. But because most tenants have never seen a tariff order, they have no way to verify.

So I built a free tool called WATT? that does the verification for you.

You enter:
• What you paid for your prepaid token OR your postpaid bill amount
• How many units were credited to your meter
• Your tariff band (or use the Area Band Finder if you don’t know it)

WATT? calculates what you should have paid using NERC’s official MYTO rates including 7.5% VAT and tells you if you were overcharged — down to the kobo.
If you were overcharged, it generates a formal dispute letter addressed to your DisCo and NERC that you can send via WhatsApp in one tap.

In the first week alone:
114 Nigerians used it
16 overcharges were detected on real bills
Zero naira spent to use it

It covers 317 areas across Lagos. You can also type your street or area name to find your official tariff band instantly without calling your DisCo.

No download. No registration. Works on any phone. Works offline.

If you have ever suspected your landlord or DisCo is overcharging you — this will tell you for sure.

Drop your area in the comments if you want to know your tariff band and I will look it up for you. 👇

For anyone in Lagos, try typing your area in the Band Finder and let me know if your band is what you expected.

Some areas are being billed at Band A rates but only getting Band C supply hours.

I built a free tool called WATT? that helps Nigerians verify their electricity bills against NERC’s official approved tariff rates.

Most of us are being overcharged and don’t even know it. Landlords inflate rates, DisCos apply wrong bands, and NERC’s actual approved figures are buried in PDFs nobody reads.

WATT? fixes that.
Here is what it does:
1. Bill Auditor — Enter what you paid and how many units you got (prepaid) or your bill amount (postpaid). The app calculates your correct amount including energy charge, fixed fees, RERF levy and 7.5% VAT, then tells you if you were overcharged.
2. Area Band Finder — Don’t know your tariff band? Type your street or area name. Covers 317 areas across Lagos. Find your band instantly.
3. Dispute Letter — If you were overcharged, it generates a formal complaint letter addressed to your DisCo and NERC. Send it via WhatsApp in one tap.
4. Token Calculator — Before you buy a token, see exactly how many kWh you should receive at the NERC-approved rate for your band.

Everything is free. No registration. No app to download. Works on any phone including low-end Android. Works offline after the first load.

I built this during my SIWES internship after seeing firsthand how customers were being overcharged daily with no easy way to verify or dispute it.

Try it and let me know what your bill says. If your area is not in the Band Finder yet, drop it in the comments and I will add it.

For Lagos residents especially, type your area in the Band Finder and see what band you are actually supposed to be on. Many people are being billed at higher band rates than they qualify for.
