Go and read Enahoro's book 'How to be a Nigerian' , which was written in 1965, when regions were around. Nigeria then was the same country it is today.

Also, go and read Nzeogwu's speech of Jan 15 1966. His coup was wrong , but his description of NIgeria as it was then was very very apt.

As an example, the governor of Kaduna state from 1991-3 electrified more villages in his state than the Sardauna of Sokoto ever did in six years. And yet, Northerners hail Sardauna as some great, same way yorubas and igbos do for Awo and Azikiwe.

All of the regions were seriously underdeveloped and poor.
