Things are changing very fast. One of the things that were often drummed into our ears while playing ten-ten and rolling used tyres down bumpy roads in those days was about the blessing called Nigeria. ‘No natural disasters’, ‘our country is peaceful’ and ‘our weather is perfect’ were three of the famous lines that made your tataafo’s head swell with pride. Fast forward 30 years and you will see that the song has changed. The song has been badly remixed to include Boko Haram, ritualism, kidnapping and more recently Ebola and female terrorists. A melody that was once sweet has since turned harsh and distasteful. Is it then strange that our youths seek foreign songs, calling out with rhythmic melody? You see, a friend used to joke about the fate that awaits an individual struck with many ailments at the same time in a country with an abysmal health system such as ours. He would say, imagine someone having tuberculosis, syphilis, hepatitis B and cancer of the lung. Haba! Imminent death, I think. Not a pleasant thought that could induce a peaceful night rest, though. That was exactly how news about Ebola virus on our soil jolted eavesdropper out of his quiet reverie. I assure you, it’s the kind of news that would snap a drunkard out of his alcohol-induced stupor. You will have to agree with your tataafo that the situation is worrisome. But that is not eavesdropper’s only concern, you see, there is this nephew that reminds me of my tyre-rolling days. He thinks his big uncle has answers to all questions and so he is often not afraid to ask them. Some of the questions that have to do with man and woman have already been cleverly deflected by your one and only. But there is a set of fresh ones about the state of the country. The boy wants to know what is worth celebrating in Nigeria but the answer still eludes his big uncle. And no amount of head scratching has been able to do the job. The old songs my elders drummed into me still rings in my ears but as I said, they are outdated now. Events have overtaken the old story long before now. Anyway, first things first, I guess I need to let my nephew know the importance of washing his hands to help safeguard himself against Ebola and also learn to avoid crowded places when he can to stand a chance against our Number one bad boys. It’s true that health, education, power, infrastructure and others are bleeding deep, so I think I will also need to tell my nephew to look in the mirror and love what’s inside if it’s so hard for him to love the mess around. It’s a good start, I suppose. Calling for ‘Emergency of State’ There was a time in this country when it was a given that any blast you heard came from the exhaust of a commercial bus. Yes, we know how some of them are accompanied by fumes all over the place. But that was then and it already feels like ages ago. We duck for cover now when we hear anything remotely close to the popping sound of a balloon bursting or a cork coming out of a wine bottle. Well, I duck for cover too and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Speaking of sudden explosive sounds, they are heard all over the place up north these days and our khaki boys have been made spectators. So our hearts do go out to our brothers and sisters in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Kano and Kaduna. Sadly, we cannot call for ‘state of emergency’ in Kano and Kaduna knowing the term is nothing more than an expression in the three states where it is said to be in effect. Or maybe we could start asking for an ‘emergency of state’ in Kano and Kaduna just to be sure they have nothing in common with the states said to be under ‘state of emergency’ lest they share in their failure.
