FEMALE DRIVERS - SAFETY PRECAUTIONS The preponderance of men in the society has not limited women to possession of cars and usage of road. Because of lifestyle and work commitments a large number of women now move from much greater distances than ever before. In the history of Nigeria, the first female to own and drive a car is the Doyen of female rights, regarded as "The Mother of Africa." Her full name was Fumilayo Ransome-Kuti. Described as "The Lioness of Lisabi" for her leadership of the women of the Egba clan. Kuti was the mother of the activists Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a musician; Beko Ransome-Kuti, a doctor; and professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a doctor and a former health minister of Nigeria. She was also grandmother to musicians Seun Kuti and Femi Kuti. In the insurance industry women are regarded as “safer” drivers and less likely to be in a road accident. In the concurrent settings, female drives cars, “kekenapep” even Bikes. It can however be for personal or commercial purposes. Even though all motorist needs to be vigilant and discreet regarding road usage. There are precautions that could enhance the safety of all drivers – especially female drivers. The points listed below will help increase the security consciousness of female drivers: • Grab your keys out of your bag as you approach your car, but do not use remote locking until you are at the vehicle. Always check before you get in that there is no one hiding inside, then ensure all doors are locked as soon as you are safely in. • Before setting on a long car trip, be sure your vehicle is in prime condition and have it serviced regularly by a reputable garage. Check the tyre condition and pressure regularly, also don’t forget to check the spare, change the oil on a regular basis. Learn to jump-start the battery and change a wiper blade so you won’t risk being a damsel in distress. • Avoid driving when you are tired, avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. It is most likely people take caffeinated beverages to stay awake while using the highway, you probably might stay awake but may wander cause of its effect.Take breaks couple of hours, if need be, stretch legs by walking around. • Make sure you have a Car safety kit in case you suffer a breakdown. Don't wait until fuel hits E on refuel at an unfamiliar road, you might not know when the next gas station appears. Make sure the fuel is refilled before embarking on any journey. • There should be high alertness and focus while driving or out and about. If you visit a cash point or a supermarket, make sure all doors are locked. When you return to your car, if you are suspicious of any movement or car parked blocking your car do not approach the car. Return to the shopping Centre and ask the guards to walk you back to your car. Safety is better than being sorry. Observe traffic laws and when you approach the light, try to position your car in the middle of the road beside the central white line. Distance from the pavement will deter car jackers. • Keep valuables -Laptop, handbag, mobile phones - out of sight. Looking expensive by wearing jewelries or designer watches while driving, can unwittingly encourage thieves. If you are suspicious of being tracked, drive to the nearest police station or busy place to get help, if there is none, drive to the nearest convenience Centre, don’t underrate strength in numbers. • If you have to pull over, never park on the shoulder or in the breakdown lane. Avoid cutting in front of someone, changing lanes too fast and not using signals may cause an accident or upset other drivers.Leave enough space to pull out from behind the car you are following.Ignore banters with road users to prevent road rage.Avoid assumptions that other road users are perfect, they can make costly mistakes. • Make sure babies are well strapped to the seat belt, avoid sitting children at front of the vehicle. In case of accident the airbag can suffocate children. Keep your children - in - car seat in the middle of the back seat. • The prevalence of great map apps on smart phones has been able to help road users from getting lost cause it displays location and guides. Additionally, you can install a tracking app so family and friends can know your whereabouts especially when it's late.If you don't have access to a smartphone, maybe your vehicle has an in-built navigation system or an old flip phone point being, you are probably going to have something at your fingertips that is GPS-enabled and data-connected. In conclusion, we would like to commend our female drivers on the caution they usually display on our roads. May these recommendations contribute to increased safety awareness sharing our roads. ROAD TRAFFIC CRASH “MY FUTURE IN MY HANDS” The most prevalent means of transportation in Nigeria is the road transportation, irrespective of other means of transportation; air, rail and water. The era of globalisation and industrialisation has made life simple and easy compared to the primitive means of transportation such as animals (beast of burden). Despite the happiness and change of quality of family lives associated with owning a vehicle, its possession has made so many families bereaved of their breadwinners or loved ones due to unprecedented rate of Road Traffic Crash Road Traffic Crash (RTC) is one of the world’s largest public health and injury prevention problems. These occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationery obstruction, such as free or utility pole, which may result into injury, deformity, death, vehicle damage, property damage, as well as financial costs to both society and the individuals involved. However, the deviant attitude of road users in the society has provided an enabling ground for lack of obedience to traffic rules and regulations. Several questions arise when Road Traffic Crashes occurs, how can we compel drivers to show consideration for human lives on our roads? Are Nigerian drivers so unobservant about road rules and the lives of other road users that they have little regard for everyone? How do we account for the horrible number of casualties the nation suffers through Road Traffic Crash every year? There are several causes of road traffic crash which is conventionally ramped into various factors ranging from; human, mechanical and environmental factors. The human factor accounts for the large percentage of crashes in fact, the mechanical and environmental factors are subservient to it. The human factors in Road Traffic Crashes include all factors related to the drivers and the road users that may contribute to a collision. They include; decision-making, overconfidence, ignorance and illiteracy, driver behavior, skill or impairment. The feeling of being confident in more and more challenging situations is experienced as evidence of driving ability, and that ‘proven’ ability reinforces the feelings of confidence. Confidence feeds itself and grows unchecked until something happens – a near-miss or an accident. Driver impairment describes the factors that prevent the driver from driving at their normal level or skill. Common impairments include driving under the influence of alcohol. Combining low doses of alcohol, cannabis, codeine or meth with other illicit drugs leads to drowsiness while driving and becomes a potential hazard to themselves and other road users. Physical impairment includes deformities and visual auditory acuity. Sleep deprivation which leads to fatigue. The advent of mobile phones has also contributed to these problems in the society. In developed countries road rules and regulations are taken strict and enforced to regulate traffic crash. Some brag about their identities and high social statuses, some threaten the traffic officials or FRSC officials with a sack, or threaten to deal with them with their thugs – the so-called “Big Man” and “Madam”. The mechanical factor include poor vehicle maintenance, tyre blowouts, poor lights, un-road worthy vehicles, broken down vehicle on the road without adequate warning sign etc. Heavy wind, storm, hurricane, sun reflection, pot holes, rainfall and un-tarred roads are some of the environmental factors responsible for the causes of Road Traffic Crashes. Some road users during at top speed when the down pour is heavy without taking note of how dangerous the roads are. Nigeria roads, despite the effort of Road Maintenance Agency are still in very bad states especially those leading to rural areas. Most of these crashes also involve a human factor; the environmental factor was either noted as making a significant contribution to the circumstances of the crash or did not allow room to recover. However, the governments have taken preventive measures to curb the issue of RTCs in the society today. The introduction and the effort of the Federal Road Safety Commission has served as a strong deterrent against reckless road users and the commission has out road users on check and reduce the rate of RTCs. The use of seat belts in the society today has reduced the risk of death by two-third and minimal injuries or bruises after any traffic crash. There should be a test that road users undergo on the spot, breath-testing of drivers for alcohol and illicit drugs. Recent studies have shown that careful design and maintenance, with well-designed intersections, road surfaces, visibility and traffic control devices, can result in insignificant improvements in accident rates. In addition to that, a potential long fall stopped by early guardrail, meridian barriers and other physical objects can help reduce the consequences of an accident (prevent rollovers from highways) and minimize damage. A well maintained vehicle and well-designed vehicle with good brakes and well-adjusted suspension will be more controllable in an emergency situation be better equipped to avoid collision. The drivers on their side must adopt defensive driving techniques whose principle assumed that every other driver on the road is a potential threat. In a nutshell, there should be fast, immediate and urgent attention to casualties of Road Traffic Crashes. Moreover, medical institutions should be given immediate attention to save a life. We should learn to create awareness about road precaution. Visit www.carpartsnigeria.com for automobile usage and update Follow at @NGCarparts |
