Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, was on Saturday, September 1, crowned as the ‘icon of democracy’ by the Rivers state-owned Ignatius Ajuru University of Education saying this was in recognition of his contributions to the growth and survival of the country.
A statement by Simeon Nwakaudu, a spokesperson of Governor Nyesom Wike, said the honour was given Jonathan at the 35th and 36th combined convocation ceremony of the institution.
The investiture of the former president was performed by the pro-chancellor of governing council of the institution, King AM Ikuru, who said the award is the first of its kind in the history of the university.
The statement added that Prof Boma Obi, who also gave reasons why the honour was bestowed on Jonathan, said the former president’s advocacy for true democracy knows no bounds.According to her, the institution was particularly inspired by Jonathan's commitment to peaceful electioneering process, especially his declaration that his political ambition is not worth the life of any Nigerian.She declared that unlike other political gladiators, Jonathan set a new benchmark by peacefully handing over power to an opposition political party.
The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, commended the Rivers state governor for his investments in developing the institution.
"In February 2018, Governor Wike graciously approved and released a grant of N200million to us. The greater part of what you commissioned this morning is the result of that grant," the vice chancellor said.
In his response, Jonathan expressed gratitude to the institution for the honour done to him.
“I want to specially thank the Senate of the university for considering my family worthy of double honours, to wit: the conferment of the honour of ‘Icon of Democracy’ on me and the naming of the new automated university library after my wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.“I always attach so much importance to any recognition coming from home because I strongly believe that no prize commands higher value than the one given by the beneficiary’s direct constituency,” he said.
Jonathan also noted that his visit was like a home-coming for him, as a former lecturer in the Rivers state college of education, which was upgraded to a full-fledged university.“Let me also say that I had good job satisfaction here, compared to all the other places I have worked.
“I know that the only major challenge academic staff face is with the reward system, considering the fact that as a nation, we are yet to get to the point where we pay our teachers the wages they deserve.
"However, for all the hindrances teachers face, they derive a fulfilling experience and satisfaction from the special relationship they cultivate with their students. This is because bringing up the young ones is very rewarding in a very distinct manner.

“The bond, friendship and sense of loyalty is eternal. Even today, the way my former students regard and relate with me is different from the way my fellow politicians relate with me, even those I mentored,” Jonathan said.
Governor Wike, who is the visitor to the university, announced the release of N500 million to the management of the institution for expansion of key facilities.
“For us therefore providing quality education for our people is an absolute necessity as nothing can be more important.
“That was why we have and will continue to prioritize the provision of quality education for our children and adults alike to acquire the knowledge and skills that they need to succeed and contribute to our collective progress.
“Here in this university, we recently released the sum of N200, 000,000.00 (two hundred million naira), as capital grant for fiscal year 2017 and we are happy with what qualitative deployment of this money by the vice chancellor to meet the infrastructure needs of this university.
“We are also pleased with the progressive increase in enrolment being experienced by the university in recent times, which shows a growing confidence in the quality and relevance of the progammes of the university.
“These unparalleled achievements clearly testify to the fact that the university is fulfilling its mandate of producing quality teaching and administrative manpower to drive the educational needs of the state and our nation,” he said.www.naij.com

Stephanie Hegarty, a foreign journalist who has been working in Nigeria for the past two years, recently took to her Twitter page to share her experiences in the country via a poem.
She wrote on her experiences with food, dealing with men who always volunteered to help her park, her excitement whenever NEPA/PHCN brings light and how people often called her ‘oyinbo.’

Nothing like the wahala and its best friend, camaraderie. Sharing the struggle of traffic and gens and terrible roads. Though some of us much less than others.
To the fiery fuse of Lagosians. And every shouting match I witnessed on your streets AND the plenty I took part in. Ok, started.

I’ll miss late night chats by the guard house with Mohamed about the wonders of the earths ecosystems. Trying to describe what snow is like in mediocre Pidgin.
And Light, oh Light. I could dedicate an entire ode to the joyful sound of the siren triumphantly announcing the return of Nepa.

It was the end of the road for a notorious leader of a cult group in Lagos as he was arrested over the weekend by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos Police Command in Jakande Estate, Ajah area of the state.35yrs old Andrew Awalebi, who was arrested with his accomplices said that noamount of gun shot can penetrate his body as he has fortified his body with native charms.He added that the protective charm was specially prepared for him by an herbalist in Ijebu-Isiwo, Ogun State to save him from gunshots of land grabbers in Lekki.The suspect, who belonged to Eiye Confraternity, was said to have been arrested on Friday morning at a beer parlour in company of three other cult members around 8:00 a.m.The other members of the cult group identified as Adegoke Adeleke (30), Kehinde Adebogun (31), were also picked up early Saturday morning at an hotel in Ikorodu.Awalebi, who hails from Ilaje Local Government, Ondo State was given out by Michael Thompson of the same Eiye Confraternity as a cult leader. Thompson was arrested a night before for robbery at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.Awalebi, who works with a popular land owner in Lekki stated that he earns N40, 000 monthly from the property dealer for helping to protect his landed property in the area.He added “I was initiated into Eiye Confraternity in 1996 by Banji Omisore and later in 1997 I was promoted as its topmost leader after the death of Omisore.“We are eight members in the cult group. We meet very early in the morning or late at night. I have been arrested by Special Anti – Robbery Squad sometimes ago when my cult group caused mayhem in Jakande Estate, inflicting injuries on passers-by in the area”, he disclosed.Arrested alongside Awalebi were Michael Thompson (24), Adegoke Adeleke (30), Kehinde Adebogun (31), Koffi Kwame (17),Daniel Olayiwola (36) and Tosin Issac (26)and have all confessed to be members of Eiye Confraternity.Confirming the arrest, spokesperson, Lagos Police Command, SP Dolapo Badmus, warned parents and guardians to be wary of their children and the behaviour of their wards.“Charity begins at home. But this should end there. Parents should help police to tackle cultism in their respective localities.They should endeavour to report to the nearest police station around them if they suspect movements of their children, this would help the Police to nip in the bud the menace of cultism”, she advised.She added that the guys have been transferred to State Criminal Investigative Department (SCID), Panti for further investigation.

The Nigerian Community in South Africa has confirmed attacks and looting of Nigerian-owned businesses in Pretoria West on Saturday. Ikechukwu Anyene, president, Nigeria Union, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the attacks began at 4.00 a.m.He said the union had reported the incident to the Nigerian mission and SouthAfrican police. “As we speak, five buildings with Nigerian businesses, including a church have been looted and burned by South Africans.“One of the buildings is a mechanic garage with 28 cars under repairs, with other vital documents, were burned duringthe attack. “Also, the pastor of the church was wounded and is in the hospital receiving treatment,” he said.Anyene said the union had informed Nigerians in South Africa to be vigilant in the face of renewed xenophobic attacks.According to him, the union received information that there will be xenophobic attacks against foreigners on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23.“We began taking precautionary measureswhen the incident took place today. “The attack in Pretoria West is purely xenophobic and criminal attack because they loot the shops and homes before burning them,” he said.Anyene called on the Federal Government to persuade its South African counterpart to protect Nigerians in their country.“These attacks should not be allowed to continue because it is a big setback,” he said.

A gang of suspected armed inter-state armed robbers which specialised in dispossessing victims of their cars and valuables has been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of Oyo State Police Command. The gang, it was learnt, usually target female drivers.The arrested suspects included Gbene Emmanuel (27), Akhigbe Andrew (35), Augustine Helen (27), said to be the gang’sarmourer, Godwin Ngozi (38), Ogedegbe Famous (23), Owolabi Adegoke (29), Adebayo Muyiwa (54), Pelemo Samuel (28) and Oni Niyi (35).Speaking during a press briefing last week, the state Commissioner of Police, Sam Adegbuyi said that the gang attackedone Omobola (surname withheld) and attempted to snatch her Toyota Corolla caat gun point as she was about to drive intoher residence at Elebu area of Ibadan.He said that the alarm raised by the victimattracted neighbours and SARS operatives on patrol, leading to Emmanuel’s arrest as he tried to escape with his gang member, Famous. Adegbuyiadded that Emmanuel led the SARS operatives to other gang members in Ibadan and Akure, Ondo State, including their suspected armourers who were females.“During interrogation, they confessed to have snatched five cars and mentioned one Alhaji who used to receive the vehicles from them,” the police commissioner stated.Recovered from the suspects were two locally-made cut-to-size guns, two live cartridges, a Nissan Sunny car, an axe and a cutlass.Saturday Tribune had an interview session with the suspects. I was arrested during an attempt to rob a woman of his vehicle. My friend, Famous, invited me and one Praise, saying that his friend in Akure said he should come to Akure for a robbery operation. I agreed to follow him because I needed money. I knew him in Delta State.I started robbery with Praise who is at large. We operated in Delta State. Since I finished my Ordinary National Diploma in Computer Science at the Abia State Polytechnic in 2010, I have been a driver because I could not secure a good job. Those I worked with were always stressing me by not paying salary promptly or giving me faulty vehicles.I discussed my desire to travel to Cyprus, Athens for further studies with Praise and he led me into his robbery gang. What I usually did was to drive away the vehicle the gang members snatched at gun point. The gun we used belonged to Praise but he bought an additional one when we were going to Akure to join Famous.I was able to save about N450,000 from proceeds of robbery operations I did with Praise, but I have squandered it. Some of the receivers did not pay for the vehicles we gave them. I have joined others to snatch five vehicles.I also have a friend, Matthew, in Ibadan whom I used to work with in Ibadan to snatch vehicles. I knew another friend, Andrew, through Matthew. When I was in Akure, I was speaking with both of them on phone and Andrew asked me to come to Ibadan to help him snatch a vehicle. Mr Kasimu Oseni on Tuesday approached a Lugbe Customary Court, Abuja, seeking the dissolution of his 13-year-old marriage to Rebecca over regular beatings he received from her.

Oseni said his wife had turned him to a “punching bag’’, adding that she always beat him at the slightest provocation.

He said, “I have tried very hard to provide her needs but she enjoys violence and fight.



“This is not my idea of marriage. Our continued staying together would not guarantee my security and wellbeing any longer.”

He further said his wife had made life unbearable for him for many years, adding that he had been harassed by many policemen.

According to the petitioner the union is blessed with two children.

Oseni said he was a good husband and father as according to him, he single-handedly pays the children’s school fees.

He said, “I am, therefore, urging the court to allow me take custody of my children as their safety and wellbeing can only be guaranteed by me.

“It will interest the court to know that Rebecca does not do anything to earn a living and therefore would not be in the position to take care of my children.”

He also said his wife had four children from her first marriage.

Oseni said apart from the regular beatings, the wife had failed in her matrimonial obligations, adding that he was fed up.

“I am urging the court to separate us because I am no longer interested in the marriage,’’ he said.

Rebecca, however, denied all the allegations levelled against her, saying that, her husband was her detractor.

President of the court Esther Omavuezi, however, asked the couple to provide more evidence to back their claims.

She also advised them to use the few days left before the next hearing date to resolve their differences and adjourned the case till Feb 14, for further hearing.
