The Federal Government has formally requested for the special vaccine just developed by the United States for treating of Ebola Virus, Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu disclosed on Wednesday The Minister said request for the vaccine was to to demonstrate government’s resolve in tackling the spread of Ebola Virus in Nigeria. Two people, a Liberian, Sawyer, and a nurse who treated him had been the two casualties of Ebola Virus in Nigeria. Two medical doctors of US origin who were in Liberia for treatment of Ebola drugs had been reported to have showed signs of improvement in health after they were treated with the experimental drugs for treating Ebola Virus, after they were returned to US for further medical attention. The Health Minister said he had written to the United States Centre for Disease Control for assistance in producing the experimental drugs being used in treating the US missionary doctors infected with the virus available to Nigeria. However, the government has raised the alarm that the issue of Ebola virus with six confirmed Nigerian victims has become a matter of national emergency. The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, and the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, made government’s position known while briefing State House correspondents of the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council ( FEC). The FEC meeting was presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo. The Health Minister said said the government had decided to embark on mass recruitment of health personnel to strengthen the team managing the situation in Lagos where all the Nigerian cases were recorded. He expressed hope that the Nigeria Medical Association will soon call off its industrial action to join in the emergency service since government had met almost all their demands. Chukwu added that the government had also started the process of procuring isolation tents that will be distributed to all the states of the Federation and Abuja to cater for those who will be quarantined because of the virus. This, he said, had become necessary because residents were raising objections to housing the patients close to them. He put the cost of one of such isolation tents at about N20m. “We have a national emergency. Indeed, everyone in the world is at risk. Nobody is immune. The Nigerian experience had alerted the world because every country is connected by flights,” he said. He further disclosed that the government had set up a special team to provide counseling to patients and their families. He said the Minister of Information would soon visit Lagos State to assess the situation and sensitise residents on the deadly virus. He minister advised the public to avoid handshake as much as possible if they could afford it, describing the virus as both contagious and infectious. He said the virus could also be contacted through the sharing of bedspreads, pillow cases and towels among other personal effects with infected persons. On update on casualty, Chukwu said Nigeria has so far recorded seven confirmed cases of Ebola virus, including the first case of the late Liberian- American, Patrick Sawyer, who imported it to the country. He said one of the nurses who cared for Sawyer was the first known Nigerian to die of the decease on Tuesday. He said the other five victims were currently in an isolated ward in Lagos. As part of strategies to rise to the national emergency, Chukwu said a website, www.ebolaalert.org , has been designed to offer information on the virus. http://www.newspotng.com/fg-request-for-emergency-drugs-on-ebola-from-us/ Source: |

The college of medicine UNILAG has a powerful Anatomy department filled with great Academicians. Our Gross anatomy is very important because thats where we get to see the human body in full so it's quite important. Our weapons in the lab include God first of all our brains, our dissecting manuals, dissecting instruments and Human Anatomy Atlas. A typical day in the gross anatomy laboratory where we get to dissect the human body could be frustrating or enjoyable. Our Lab is large and we have different groups, we are usually welcomed with Formalin which has an irritating smell and brings water from your eyes. On my table, we start by praying for God's guidance. We follow our dissecting manuals and then start dissecting. I get frustrated when we can't find a nerve, a vein or an artery because this slows us down so much! but the joy in finding them is so great! our dissection makes us appreciate the human body and see the wonderful works of God. We are sometimes lucky to find someone to put us through otherwise we follow the standard Problem based learning for dissection. My group members are lusually too careful as if they once knew the cadaver though I Try to explain to them as the group leader that he's dead and we need to dissect fast which ar times lead to arguments. Some of us are usually excited to sign attendance and leave especially when we are frustrated and we cant find what we are supposed to, so we hurry to sign attendance and leave. The beauty of this is that the dissection helps us to understand what we read so we would help the society health wise one day. Our Cadaver has also helped in contributing to knowledge that will help save the live of many people! Joshua Idowu 200L Dentistry and Dental Surgery College of Medicine, UNILAG. |

Nigeria have been plagued no doubt with attacks trouble on the right and left and then one wonders if there is hope at all for this nation. Nigeria is a nation rocked and plagued with terrorism. I see a skyline though! I see the future of this nation getting brighter because the younger generation are going to take over! logical reasoning will replace Harsh religious extremism. The educated ones will Come gp take over and know that corruption is a cankerworm and things will seem brighter. I sre a skyline though very thin! it will expand. Nigeria is a nation blessed with natural resources but victimized by Bad leadership, corruption and terrorism. leadership training should be organized at various levels by organisations to groom leaders ao our nation can change! There is a skyline! |

Yaya Toure Has won the prestigious African Player of the year award ahead of John Obi Mikel and Didier Drogba. The mancity playmaker has been influential for both club and country, congratulations to him. |
She was running out of time. The water rose far above her waist and she struggled to remain afloat. Holding her nose, she submerged herself into the water to search for an object strong enough to pry open the jammed door. Her observant eyes spotted a crowbar floating aimlessly just a little below and she went in deeper to retrieve it. It was of no use, the door had to be opened from outside and she was sure there were no divers around to help her out. She was trapped inside the car and help didn’t seem eager to come out. Yielding to the impulsive waves, she closed her eyes and waited for the water to swallow her up. There was no point fighting; this was the end. She was going to drown in this river and her body may not even be found. As she struggled with her final breath, she heard a faint sound and opened her eyes suddenly. Someone had yelled her name… Areya woke up abruptly, her heart thumping loudly in her chest. She could almost feel the taste of salt water in her mouth; it had seemed so real just like in the previous dreams. Dr Charles had warned her about certain flashes and dreams she may experience as a result of her brain trying to reconstruct her memory. “…It’s possible as the week progresses that you might have some confusing dreams or episodes that may shake you up a little. When this happens, you just need to calm yourself and come back here for some therapy sessions that would help you get through them.” The doctor said during her last therapy session before she was discharged. They were seated in folding chairs, opposite each other and she turned her attention to the only item in the room that stood apart: a colored file cabinet. Reya wondered how many file cases were in the cabinet, “So do I consider these dreams as real or merely my subconscious reacting?” she asked him. “It depends on the circumstances… perhaps the events that occurred before the dream.” He crossed his legs. “What about the drug trials... can they have any side effects that could cause these dreams to happen?” The doctor uncrossed his legs and hesitated a little before answering. “We’ll certainly be looking into that as a side effect, but these drugs aim for the centers of your brain that involve memory storage and because dreaming is about the process of assembling and disassembling memories, it’s possible that the dreams may be partially drug induced.” He said carefully avoiding her eyes. “So I should stop taking them?” “Of course not.” He replied immediately letting out a laugh that sounded close to a cough. She gave him a comatose smile; he was hiding something from her. “Areya, are you coming down for breakfast?” A voice said, breaking into her thoughts. She was in the guest bedroom at Sita’ house. The doctor had advised that she stayed close to her since the latter was a strong connection to her past life. She hadn’t hesitated. Sita was the only person she trusted to help her get through her present situation. Reya blinked, Cataleya was still standing, staring at her with questioning eyes. “I’ll be right there Cataleya, I just need a minute.” She forced a smile and waited till her host left. They had barely exchanged words since she arrived at the house four days ago. Sita had introduced her heartily as her cousin but Reya already knew who she was. The devil herself had come home to stay. She fastened the buttons on her pajamas; from the room she could sniff out the smell of bacon and sandwiches- one of Sita’s favorite. Food wasn’t on the list of things she needed now. She was confused, perplexed and terrified. Growing up, she was used to being independent and being able to rely on her instincts and brain power to make her decisions. Now she felt trapped and vulnerable. It wasn’t two days or months, it was two years of a lot of happenings and she had a sick feeling that this was not just an accident…… ****************************************************************************** Her laugh echoed through the joint office. The one thing she enjoyed more than frustrating Luke was frustrating Luke after a visit to the captain. She had been teasing him about the disaster date he had the previous weekend with an old friend and now he was almost turning red. He shoved her away playfully as he picked up his buzzing trackphone and pushed the ‘answer’ button. “Luke Casper speaking,” He said to the caller. “Yes, he is the one. We were informed last week…when?” His eyes darkened a little, “Sure, we’ll be right on it. Thanks for the heads up.” He ended the call. “What is it?” She asked him wide-eyed. “Brandon is the next target.” He replied, running his hands through his hair. “What do you mean? Who called?” She inquired nervously, already clearing up her table. Brandon was her ex-boyfriend. “Hannah” “I thought we were clear on that Luke, no personal involvement.” Her eyes watered. “I know, I know. I don’t know how it happened. I took him off the radar just as you request.” Luke replied shutting down his system. They had to act fast if they wanted to help him. He locked his cabinets and drawers and turned off his office pager. She was already making her way out of the office. “Sophia?” He made a move to stop her. “What?” She shot him an incensed look. “There is another seeker out there. That is the only explanation. You can’t afford to do this on your own.” “Watch me.” She said through clenched teeth and walked away. The door made a loud bang and Luke collapsed on the chair, hands on his head. He felt a slight tickle on the cheek, his hand band stroke the side of his cheek gently and lingered there. He pulled it off and stared at it. It was a grey band made up of the different things his sister loves… loved. The last object was a wooden lioness with a crown on her head. Just at the center of the crown was a blue diamond that sparkled only when reflected by the sun. He felt a wave of sadness. The band was the only object that was recovered from her body. He quivered as the horrid image of her charred corpse flashed through his mind. He swallowed and shoved the band into his right pocket making sure it could still receive signals as he couldn’t afford to stay far away from the object. He had a duty to carry out. His sister had paid dearly for her carelessness, he wasn’t about to let Sophia do the same. He dialed her number and she answered on the 2nd ring. “Where are you?” he asked her hoping she hadn’t done anything stupid. “Your apartment.” She replied flatly. “What are you doing there?” He made a mental note to change his locks. “Waiting for you to get over yourself and come help me save Brandon’s life.” Her voice was gentle. He chuckled. One of the things he loved about her…one of the many reasons she made a good Bluecorp agent. Luke’s apartment. “Did Hannah say Brandon Allister or just Brandon? Sophia asked in a frustrated voice. They had been scanning through the database trying to find out who ordered the ‘extraction’ on Brandon but their search yielded nothing-Not even Luke’s expertise in software analysis was helping matters. “If it wasn’t Brandon, she wouldn’t have told us. Try his cell again.” He said while writing some programs. They were trained software analysts specially recruited into the corporation to monitor clients-both incoming and outgoing. Luke’s unusual smartness was noticed at the age of 10 when he wrote the value of pi to 700 decimal places at a go. He had always been the perfect son; well-behaved and cool headed. His sister Michelle was not any different from him, her photographic memory was undisputable. After their parents’ death, they moved to Arizona to live with their Aunt. There, they came face to face with the real word, the fact that everything wasn’t as it seemed dawned on them soon enough. Gradually, they came to terms with their dilemma. It was either Bluecorp or “the streets”. “Still switched off.” Sophia said. She paced about for a while trying to come up with an alternative on communicating with Brandon without exposing herself or Luke. The trackphone was the only way she could talk to him. She had specially designed one for him when they were still together. Brandon hated intrusion, he loved his privacy more than anything in the world, she included; she soon got to find out. “You know he can take care of himself right?” Luke asked her after another failed attempt. “Someone wants him under for a reason. You know Brandon, he is always into trouble or the other. Fine, he can take care of himself but can he withstand the pressure? He is a memory person, he hardly forgets things. Do you really think he can live normally after that?” Sophia pointed out, her face portraying emotion. “You still love him, don’t you?” Luke gave her a lopsided grin. Her phone buzzed before she could reply. She dived for it, assuming it was Brandon. “Brandon?” “Hello Sophia” said an all- too-familiar voice with a tone of hatred. Sophia flashed Luke a danger glance and he started tracking the call. “Don’t bother calling his cell anymore cos in the next ten seconds your “Brandon love” would be dead. Just wanted to give you the good news, have a great day Sophia dear.” The phone clicked…… Source: http://joshuaidowu..com |
It took great effort to finally open her eyes. Her vision was blurred as different images clashed. Through her mental haze, she locked onto a tall man in a white lab coat probably in his forties. He held a writing pad as he conversed with some nurses who seemed to be taking notes. She tried to sit up and two of the nurses immediately rushed to prop her up. Her head ached badly. The man in the white coat seemed a little shocked to see her sit up and he came over to her bed and checked her pulse. “Welcome back Areya.” He said with a gentle smile detaching the stethoscope from his ear. Welcome back from what? She thought as he started a physical examination on her. “I’m Dr. Charles and I’ve been the doctor in charge of your case.” She could only nod as the words didn’t make any effort to come out. She scanned the room for familiar faces, still disoriented. A woman sat on the couch just by the window, her hands on her chin looking rather lugubrious. A lady and a guy stood with their backs turned to her, talking in hushed tones. She was in a hospital no doubt. Who were these people? What was she doing here? “I must say you are a very lucky girl Miss Philip, most people don’t come back from these types of accidents.” The doctor said. Accident? What accident? She was in an accident… when, after college? She tried to remember but random images collided in her mind in a wreck that could not be construed as an explanation: Preparing for her professional exams, taking pictures with patty, Sita’s birthday party...Sita! Where was Sita? “I suggest you relax Areya, you don’t have to stress yourself any further, and whatever explanations you seek would be made available to you soonest.” The doctor said perhaps sensing her hazy state. Something blue flashed in her face. She turned her head; it was a blue ring on his index finger. Something about the ring bothered her but she couldn’t explain why. Just then the door opened and a lady burst in. she had jet black hair and hazel eyes. Her jaw was firm and well chiseled. Reya didn’t need to look twice, she knew who she was. Sita hugged her best friend tightly and heaved a sigh of relief. “I came as soon as I heard you were awake. Girl am I glad you are alright. You got me soooo worried! Thank you, thank you, and thank you for not dying on me.” Sita said visibly relieved. “What happened? How long have I been here?” Reya finally spoke glad to see a familiar face. “Six weeks.” Her best friend replied. “Six weeks? I was in a coma for six weeks? He said I was in an accident, what accident? How did it happen? When did it happen?” She bombarded Sita with questions. “Y—you don’t remember?” Sita was surprised; she exchanged glances with Dr. Charles and he gave his patient a puzzled look. “No, I don’t seem to remember, what happened?” “You were driving, the brakes failed and your car landed in the river” Sita started to explain but her friend was already shaking her head. “That can’t be true, I don’t drive, and I’ve not even gotten my license.” She shrugged, slightly amused. Sita’s smile petered out and the doctor gave her a reassuring smile. He urged them to excuse him as he wanted to examine his patient alone. That was when she noticed him-he had been standing at the edge of her bed holding Sita, arms crossed. His worry lined-forehead tripped some wires in Areya’s head that said friendly. His eyes held hers and he smiled almost imperceptibly, hopefully. Her mind held no recognition but he was a relief to her senses, a warm sympathetic object in an unfamiliar cold room, whoever he was, she was certain she knew him. She smiled at him but he wasn’t looking as he was making his way out of the room with Sita’s head rested on his shoulder. Areya felt a stab of pain in her chest. Who was this guy and why did she feel like she knew him personally? Why was he holding Sita? She blinked. Dr Charles was saying something. “…… Your CT scans are good, MRIs are clean, No TBI though they are not the most reliable considering you are on a drug trial.” She had no idea what he was talking about. “If everything goes according to plan, you would be discharged in no time.” He said cheerfully and she noticed the blue ring again. “I know you need to rest so I would leave you now and check back on you later. If you need anything, just press the button.” He added, patted her shoulder and made his way towards the door. “Doctor Charles,” she called after him. “Yes?” “What date is it today?” Areya asked, not knowing what else to say. “September 15th 2009.” He replied. She felt her chest muscles tighten, September 2009? What happened in January? She tried to remember, nothing. source: http://joshuaidowu..com/2014/01/seekers-episode-1-wait-am-lost_2.html 2008? Nothing. 2007? Nothing. That was when she began to shiver. Sita had said she drove her car into the river. She didn’t drive at least that was what she remembered. Does it mean she had obtained her license already? If she had, she would remember wouldn’t she? It’s too much of a detail not to remember. The doctor said she had been here for six weeks. Six weeks from where? She closed her eyes. Where was the last place she remembered visiting… Patty’s house but that was after Sita’s birthday. Could she have had the accident on her way back? Was there anyone else in the car with her? How come she didn’t remember anything after 2006? How much more had she forgotten? She had heard of cases where people lose their memory after an accident. Could that be her case? What was happening?... suddenly, it dawned on her as she opened her eyes; her face white in fear, something had taken away two years of her memory!........... |

By Favour Chima Kelechi Few days ago, a friend asked me about any resolutions I had for the new year. I replied that I had more than resolutions and this person asked me what was more than resolutions. Revolutions are completed every 365 or 366 days and well, we say a year has gone by after every revolution. Interestingly, as we approach the end of one revolution and as we approach the start of a new year, most of us are thinking of the new year, what to do and what not to do in the coming year. Many people call these thoughts resolutions and to some others, resolutions are the decisions made after all the thinking and reflection. Resolutions, the word is almost cliché as it is used ever so often with fresh revolutions and thrown about so freely. Personally, I don't think much of the word anymore. Interestingly, checking the dictionary, you will find that resolutions have some pretty serious meanings. You may find definitions like a strong will, determination, a vow, the state of being resolute and similar definitions depending on the dictionary you choose to use. If we all took this word as serious as it was supposed to be and if we all kept to our "new year resolutions" in time past, I may not have had an issue with the word or "new year resolutions" phrase. Many resolutions don't live past the first few months of the year or even weeks, maybe days or hours. So, I will say, I made decisions I am committed to for the new year, more than resolutions for the revolutions. Instead of "resolutions", " new year commitments to raise solutions for the revolution" and if you think you want your "resolutions" to bring lasting solutions , then you should agree. Raise solutions. The New Year comes with its issues and challenges and the solutions you give will either compound the challenges or dissolve them. So, what solutions do you have for whatever you might face? What decisions are you committed to? What decisions have you made? What has changed? Is it still you? Just the way you were last year? Most of us have one thing or the other we will rather and we don't want to have in The New Year. That thing could be that bad habit, that bad attitude, that lazy attitude, that carelessness or the lackadaisical attitude, what about the procastination? Don't you want final solutions to them. These things are dangerous , they have the potential to stop any forward movement or "forward ever", they could take one back to zero point(forget square one) and they could lead a useless life. Really dangerous, aren't they? These things that could make the new year like the former year or even worse before you know it and before you know it you are saying " Oh, not again, not this year! It is a new year". Of course, it is a New Year and I advise you to do more than make resolutions, RAISE SOLUTIONS!!! GOD BLESS YOU RICHLY. Kelechi. Source: http://joshuaidowu..com |

2008? Nothing. 2007?
