– Chinese business people will expect you to be well prepared for the meeting. Make sure to have at least 20 copies of your proposal ready for handing out. Note that presentation materials should be only in black and white, avoid colours.

– Small talk is considered particularly important at the beginning of a meeting.

– They prefer to establish a strong relationship before closing a deal, so you might have to meet up several times to achieve your objectives.

– It is vital for you to maintain composure during meetings. Causing embarrassment or showing too much emotion could have a negative effect for a business negotiation.

– Regarding decision-making, the Chinese tend to extend negotiations far beyond the agreed deadline to gain some advantage. Be prepared for that: accept their delays and do not mention deadlines. Your patience will be much appreciated!

– People in China usually enter the meeting room in hierarchical order. So be careful - they will assume that the first of you walking in the room is the head of the delegation!

– Business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

– Many Chinese workers take a break between 12:00 and 2:00 pm, during which almost everything stops from working - from lifts to phone services.

– It is best to schedule an appointment during these periods: April to June and September to October.

Greetings
– Handshakes are common but wait for your Chinese counterpart to initiate the gesture.

– Regarding titles of courtesy, most people should be addressed with a title followed by their last name. Careful not to use "comrade" - unless you are a committed communist of course.

The Art of Conversation
– Chinese people will appreciate it if you use a couple of words in Chinese, but make sure you are aware of the meaning and the appropriate occasions.

– In Chinese culture, the questions "Have you eaten?" or "Where have you been?" are pleasantries equivalent to the traditional "How are you?" in the English-speaking culture. Therefore, do not take it literally and start getting into details in your answer! Simply answer "yes" if you have eaten - even if you haven't – or simply smile and say "thank you!".

– Popular welcome topics are themes about China: art, scenery, landmarks, climate, and geography. You can mention your travelling experiences to other countries and include your positive impressions as a tourist in China!

– Try to avoid political-related discussions, such as the Cultural Revolution or Chairman Mao, the "Tibet" and "Taiwan" questions, human rights, animal treatment.

– Chinese people are very careful about strong negative statements. For instance, negative answers are considered impolite, so find alternatives ("I'll think about it"/"maybe"/"we'll see" instead of a blunt "no".

– Similarly, if your Chinese counterparts say "Not a big issue" or "The problem is not serious", they usually mean that there still are problems or that the problems are serious.

Body Language
– Body language and movements are things you have to be constantly conscious of when doing business in China. As mentioned above, you have to stay calm, collected and controlled.

– Body posture should always be formal and attentive as it demonstrates self-control and respectfulness.

For the N3 trillion Nigeria has received from China in the last four years, every Nigerian owes China N15,000 in debt. That’s just N3,000 short of minimum wage, Daily Trust reports.

The debt comes from two huge tranches of aid from China: $3.1 billion in 2014 and $6 billion for infrastructure in the last three years, according to political analyst Theophilus Abbah.

Simple mathematics. Divide the combined total, just over N3 trillion, by the 198 million population Nigeria always talks about: that’s a nice N15,000 in debt to China for every Nigerian.

And that doesn’t even include the loan agreement signed this week in Beijing where China pledged $60 billion in credit facilities, a quarter of it interest free.

Analysts say getting governments indebted to China is the republic’s way of outsmarting the US and the UK in Africa trade

“They are active in Liberia, Ghana, Angola,” minister of state for petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, told Bloomberg.

“They are throwing money where their mouth is and in very many respect is one area where they have beaten both the US, European and British in things like this.

“Africa requires a lot of development funds; China is able to provide it. Not just provide in terms of money but provide with adequate technology.”

The implication is Africa may be unable to resist Chinese trade and international politics.

Recently, at the World Health Assembly, the US proposed watering down recommendations against breastmilk substitutes and threatened all countries who opposed its stand with sanctions.

Only Russia stood up to the US and saved the recommendation.

A United States lawmaker, Rep Chris Smith, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, said in a recent opinion article that China also uses foreign aid as a “bargaining chip” in corrupt African countries with plenty of natural resources for them to exploit.

“AidData, a research laboratory at the College of William and Mary, argued in written testimony submitted to my committee that China effectively buys the votes of African governments at the United Nations; they concluded that if African countries voted with China at the UN an extra 10 per cent of the time, they would receive an 86 per cent bump in assistance,” the lawmaker said.

Nigeria has accepted the Chinese Yuan as a reserve currency, which will begin to compete with the US dollar.

The US lawmaker lamented that the Chinese in-road into Africa could be dangerous.

“All of these trends—rising levels of debt, shoddy infrastructure projects, and investment that permits human rights abusers to consolidate their influence and power—point to serious risks for the future of the African continent.”

Im 2016, Buhari went to China.

Nigerians were advised that Nigeria and China had signed deals worth $billions, to refresh, i list the projects..

1. $478.657.941.28 for the construction of 300MW Solar Power in Shiriro in Niger State;

2. $55m agreement between Granite and Marble Nigeria Limited and Shanghai Shibang to construct and equip granite mining plant in Nigeria.

3. $1 billion for the development of a greenfield expressway Abuja-Ibadan-Lagos;

4. $250m in housing to develop a 27-storey complex;

5. $2.5bn Lagos Metro-Rail Transit Red Line Project.

6. $1bn industrial park (Ogun-Guangdong) Free Trade Zone in Igbesa Ogun State;

7. $200m Ogun-Guangdong free trade zone for construction of two 500MT/day float gas facilities;

8. $363m for the establishment of comprehensive farm and downstream industrial park in Kogi State.

9. $525 million for the Mojec International LTD & Microstar Company LTD for television broadcast equipment and production of pre-paid smart meters for electricity consumers.

I have not edited any detail, these projects were announced by the Presidency and re-announced by various Ministers and Media aides.

So, what is the status of these projects? its been two years.....is there an industrial park in Ogun? or a new Lagos to Abuja expressway?

I would appreciate a response from anyone in the know, perhaps there is a 300mw solar plant in Niger State, i am unaware of.
