HealthHow To Prevent Chronic Diseases by joshunaai(op): 12:23pm On Jun 15, 2018
CHRONIC DISEASES
Chronic disease is a health condition in which there is a deviation from the normal functioning of the body for a long period of time (say about three months or more) and refuses to be cured by every form of treatment. The truth is that a disease once declared chronic by a doctor can rarely be cured but can only be managed as long as the person lives. They become more common with age. About 80% of the world population over 65 years of age have at least one chronic disease which of course is worst in developing countries like Nigeria. These chronic diseases include but not limited to the following:
Cardiovascular Diseases: are diseases related to the heart and the blood vessels carrying blood to and from the heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. Common heart diseases include hypertension (when the blood pressure remains high after a long time), hypertensive retinopathy (a complication of hypertension whereby there is blockage of the blood vessels preventing blood with oxygen and other vital nutrients from getting to the eye therefore causing an impaired eye and even blindness), heart attack, heart failure, heart enlargement, cardiac arrest, cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis, Coronary heart disease, macrovascular (large blood vessel) disease, etc. Some of the signs/symptoms of heart related disease includes: Frequent headaches & migraines especially early mornings, numbness of hands & legs, chest prick, chest pain, increasing blood pressure, etc.
Diabetes: is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. It could be as a result of absence or insufficient production of Insulin by the pancreas or inability of the body to properly use insulin. The three major types of diabetes are Type 1/Insulin-dependent/juvenile onset diabetes (when the pancreas undergoes an autoimmune attack by the body itself and rendered incapable of making insulin, it majorly occurs in people below 30 years and they rely on insulin medication for survival), Type 2/ Insulin-non-dependent/ adult onset diabetes (majorly characterized by lack of sensitivity/resistance to insulin by the cells especially fat/muscle cells of the body, also, the release of insulin by the pancreas may also be defective and suboptimal), Gestational/Pregnancy diabetes (temporarily occurs in some pregnant women that consumes high level of carbohydrates/sugary food and those that experience significant hormonal changes during the pregnancy and could even persist after the pregnancy and becomes permanent). Diabetes affects about 10% of the world population while about 5% have and 25% are prediabetic but they all don’t even know. Some of the signs/symptoms of diabetes are polyuria (increased frequent urination), sweet urine, excessive thirst, dehydration, increase in appetite, weight loss, hunger, fatigue, slow healing wounds, nausea with vomiting, pains in the lower extremities like toes, feet because of inadequate blood supply, diarrhea, frequent/recurring infections, blurred vision, skin problems, tingling/numbness in the feet/toes. Some of the complications of diabetes are blindness due to diabetic retinopathy, cataract, glaucoma, kidney failure (diabetic nephropathy), damaged nerves (diabetic neuropathy), erectile dysfunction, stroke, coma and death. Other chronic Diseases are:
Arthritis: is inflammation of the joints.
Cancer: is an abnormal growth of cells
Obesity: is when a person excessively becomes abnormally overweight.
RISK FACTORS/CAUSES OF CHRONIC DISEASES

Ijegun is one of the fast growing cities in Allimosho local government area of Lagos state with a high growing population density. It’s a land situated at the northern part of Lagos state and surrounded by many commercial cities such as Ikotun, Obalanje, Egbe, Jakande estate, Ejigbo e.t.c Of recent investors has made this place their real estate hub as migration of people to this environment has been on a high side and thus the need for provision of shelter has been on a high demand.

This contradicts the saying that house is cheap at ijegun. Of recent the reverse is the case. The selling and buying of land has turned into the major occupation of the people of Ijegun as development is beginning to sweep the environment of Ijegun coupled with the construction of a standard express raod linking ijegun to Ikotun, Jakande estate, Obalanje, Ije-dodo and other commercial cities round its environs.
