Education / ASUU NEC Holds Decisive Meeting On Thursday by JothamPerfection(m): 10:38pm On Sep 13, 2017
The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will meet on Thursday in Abuja to adopt a position on the concessions offered by the Nigerian government, PREMIUM TIMES can report.

The negotiation team of ASUU had on Friday requested one week to submit the government’s offers to its members for consultation and report back to government.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported how branches held congresses on Wednesday with varying decisions on the government offer.
A source in the union, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak with journalists on the issue, informed PREMIUM TIMES that the national leadership of ASUU will meet on Thursday to decide whether the strike action be called off or continued.
“NEC will hold a decisive meeting tomorrow and will collate the outcome of all branch meetings held,” the source told PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday.
Officials of the union contacted declined to speak on record on the likely outcome of the meeting.
The president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi, did not pick or return calls seeking comments.
It would be recalled that the federal government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and his Education counterpart, Adamu Adamu, had presented the federal government’s new offer to the union on Thursday last week.
ASUU had then promised to get back with a decision within a week on whether the strike will be called off or not.
ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, was quoted as saying last week: “Now we have something concrete to present to our members.”
The union declared a nationwide strike in August to protest against poor funding of varsities and issues relating to salaries.

Education / Ssanu, Naat, Nasu To Meet Fg Over Strike by JothamPerfection(m): 9:44am On Sep 12, 2017
The non-teaching staff of Nigerian universities on Monday said they would meet to decide on a date to meet with Federal Government over the indefinite strike embarked by the unions.
It will be recalled that the non-teaching staff of universities under the auspices of Joint Action Committee (JAC) had threatened to embark on an indefinite strike from Monday, Sept. 11 over non-implementation of the 2009 agreement.
Mr Samson Ugwoke, the President of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) made this known in a phone interview with tnewsmen on Monday in Abuja.
“We have commenced the strike today; the strike is total, comprehensive and indefinite.
“We only just got a letter from the Ministry of Labour and Employment inviting us for a meeting today.
“But, it is not something I alone can decide but the JAC as it involves other unions, we have to come together and take that decision on when to meet with the Federal Government, ‘’he said.
The unions under the JAC are the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and SSANU.
The demands of the unions include the payment of earned allowances to members, a review of the governance system in universities, improved funding in line with UNESCO recommendations.
Provisions of infrastructures in universities and payment of salary shortfall being owed members, implementation of the National Industrial Court judgment on university staff schools, registration of NUPEMCO.
Others are implementation of CONTISS 14 and 15 for technologists, improvement of teaching and learning facilities in the universities, stemming the tide of corruption in the university system.
The unions also called on Federal Government to show more commitment and seriousness in the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/University unions agreement, among others.
Newsmen report that the Ministry of Labour and Employment had invited the unions for a crucial meeting on Monday but the unions were absent as they claimed they were not aware of any such forum.
The ministry has further postponed the meeting for Thursday, Sept. 14.

Education / ASUU Must Henceforth Consult Us Before Embarking On Strike — NANS by JothamPerfection(m): 7:33am On Sep 12, 2017
ABUJA—THE National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has warned university teachers against embarking on industrial action without prior notice.

The students’ body also tasked the federal government to channel the money it claimed to have recovered from those who looted the country’s treasury to the education sector, saying such measures would reposition the deteriorating state of the nation’s education.

NANS President, Chinonso Obasi, in a statement, yesterday in Abuja, insisted that lecturers must consult NANS before embarking on any strike in the future.

Obasi said the decision was a fallout of the association’s just concluded emergency Senate meeting held at the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin.

NANS, according to the statement, demanded that the Federal Government should channel the money recovered by anti-corruption agencies to the education sector in Nigeria to address some of the burning issues.

“The meeting which was summoned to deliberate on the ongoing strike declared by ASUU ended successfully with an overwhelming attendance of student union Presidents and NANS stakeholders throughout the country.

“NANS mandated its leaders to reach out to the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the enormous challenges facing Nigerian students,” the statement said.

It added: ”As critical stakeholders in the education sector, it is imperative that ASUU consults NANS. Anytime ASUU wants to embark on strike, it is proper for them to consult student leaders led by NANS. ASUU should also apply other means of negotiation so that the strike will not have a direct negative impact on the students.

“ASUU has been striking to use students as their bargaining power. The interest of students must be considered and prioritized at all times. Part of the resolution was that an appeal should be made to the Federal Government to channel the loots recovered from anti-graft agencies to the education sector.”
It further added:”The Senate also passed a vote of confidence on its President for his style of leadership that has regained the lost voice of Nigerian students both at home and in the diaspora

“It was also resolved that the National President of NANS should continue to constructively engage with the stakeholders comprising ASUU and the Federal Government to resolve the strike and find a lasting solution to the enormous challenges facing Nigerian students.”

“The meeting also called on the Federal Government to prioritise the education sector in Nigeria and push for the recommendation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation that 26 per cent of the nation’s annual budget should be for funding the education sector and secure a better and sustainable educational standard.
“NANS however refused to shut down the country on account of government’s inability to resolve the ongoing strike, within 21 days, citing the prevailing economic downturn in the country.”
