The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will not disclose when it will hold its meetings to consider the Federal Government’s offers, aimed at resolving the ongoing strike.

The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said this on Sunday while responding to our correspondent’s inquiry as to when the union would meet to examine the Federal Government’s offers and resolve the strike.

The union and the Federal Government’s delegation held a 14-hour meeting on Thursday, after which they issued a communiqué, in which ASUU was asked to revert to the government within one week.


The ASUU President had on Friday said in an interview that he could not determine when the union would call off its strike until its members met to decide the next course of action.

This is also as the National Association of Nigerian Students on Saturday promised to meet the ASUU executives and consider the government’s offers with a view to ending the strike.

The NANS spokesperson, Bestman Okereafor, had said this in a statement released in Enugu State.

When contacted to comment on when the union would meet to consider the government’s positions, the ASUU President said in a text message, “Good morning. Sorry. We don’t tell outsiders the arrangements of our meetings. Have a great Sunday.”

- Other educational unions including the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities have joined the industrial action

- The indefinite strike of these bodies is set for Monday, September 11, 2017

The problems facing the Nigerian educational institutions are about to increase as all the major non-teaching staff unions of public universities have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike.

According to Premium Times, the strike is set to begin from September 11. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists, (NAAT), announced the strike on Wednesday, September 6.

The president of SSANU, who is also the chairman of JAC while speaking at a press conference in Abuja explained reasons for the industrial action, saying the nationwide strike would be total and comprehensive.



He said: “During the strike, there shall be no provision of services, no matter how skeletal. Concessions shall not be granted while all our members are to stay at home till further notice, unless as directed by JAC through their respective presidents."

A first group had assembled at the Unity Fountain to protest the ongoing strike action by ASUU when another group appeared to counter the protest.

While the anti-strike group led by Haruna Kadiri urged the federal government to do all within its power to ensure that the ongoing strike by ASUU is called off, the second group led by Ade Abayomi said they are not at the fountain for a clash

Two NANS factions had earlier clashed at the Unity Fountain , Maitama, Abuja , following the leadership tussle rocking the association.
Some of the NANS members threw caution to the wind and engaged one another in fisticuffs on the busy Shehu Shagari Way while policemen struggled to break up the fight .
Trouble started when the Kadiri faction converged on the garden to address the media before taking their protest to the education ministry .
They were about addressing journalists when the Chinonso Obasi faction stormed the venue and accused Kadiri of usurping the leadership of the student body .
The allegation angered the Kadiri faction members who attacked their opponents leading to a free - for -all on the expressway .
Meanwhile , the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association has called on the FG to utilise the funds said to have been recovered from alleged looters to meet the financial component of the demands of the university lecturers .
In a statement , the National President of the Association , Chief Chris Adokeme , contended that the annual requirement of N 200 bn for five years consecutively “was too meagre to allow university education in the country to be under lock and key. ”
“How can universities in the country remain shut when all that is required is a mere N200 bn annually ? That is far less than what goes into the National Assembly for a year . I will prefer the legislature to be shut for one year instead of our universities ,” he said .
Adokeme also called for adequate funding of TETFund to enable it to effectively discharge its obligations to the universities .
