The Federal Government’s investigative team has produced a preliminary report on the collapse of a two-story school building in Jos, Plateau State.

Around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, the structure housing Saint Academy in the Jos North Local Government Area’s Busa Buji collapsed. About 154 people were trapped during the sad event, which left 22 people dead and sent them to other hospitals.

This was made known to journalists on Tuesday in Jos by Prof. Samson Duna, Director General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI). The panel, led by Professor O.F. Job of the University of Jos’ Building Department, noted major structural distress and the use of inferior materials.

In a tragic incident that has plunged the community into mourning, a two-storey building collapsed at Saint Academy Busa Buji Jos North Area of Plateau State on the 12th of July 2024, resulting in the deaths of 22 students and injuries to 132 others. Dr. (Mrs.) Kachollom Pyam Gang, the Commissioner for Higher Education in Plateau State, has expressed her profound condolences to the bereaved families and the entire school community.

In a heartfelt message, Mrs. Gang stated, “I am deeply saddened by the devastating incident at Saint Academy Busa Buji. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased students, the injured, and everyone affected by this tragedy. Losing so many young lives in such a manner is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need to ensure the safety of our educational environments.”

The Commissioner emphasized the government’s commitment to investigating the cause of the collapse and implementing measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. “We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to understand what led to this catastrophe and to ensure that such an incident does not occur again. Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students and educational institutions across the state,” Mrs. Gang assured.

The Center for Youth Participation Dialogue and Advocacy Africa has called for full investigation into the cause of the Friday 12th July 2024 School Building collapse which claimed the lives of at least 20 students/pupils of All Saints Academy, Busa-Buji, Jos North LGA.

This was contained in a condolence message conveyed in statement issued by the Executive Director of CYPA Africa, Ambassador Chris Iyama in Jos on Friday 12th July 2024 after an on the spot assessment of the situation.

Iyama, while commending the efforts of citizens, government officials and security agencies for their swift intervention at the site of the incident which facilitated the rescue of hundreds of trapped pupils, students and staff of the school, he also called on the Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang to launch a full scale investigation to determine the cause of the tragic incident to ensure that it never happens again. He also called on the Governor to declare two days of mourning in solidarity with the families of the deceased and the injured.
