DSS Arrests Gun Fabricator for Boko Haram The Department of State Services (DSS) wish to inform the public that in line with its statutory mandate, and avowed commitment to national security, the Service has continued to record positive milestones in strategic and tactical operations embarked upon across the country. On 2nd March, 2016, one Musa Garba ABUBAKAR (Engr) aka Muhadis Musa Bin HADDAD, was arrested at Jos, Plateau State, during a special tactical operation by the Service. ABUBAKAR is a major gun fabricator, arms-runner and a covert linkman/courier for the Boko Haram group. During his arrest, 2 pistols, 80 rounds of live ammunition and several sensitive documents were recovered from him. In a bid to employ propaganda to manipulate the international community against the efforts of the Federal Government, in the ongoing war against terror in the North-West region, MUSA had approached a foreign mission in Nigeria for logistics and financial support to fight the Boko Haram. However, unknown to the mission, he is actually an unauthorized gun-maker/runner with intent for mischief and communal strife in the North Central region. In furtherance of exploited leads, this Service apprehended other suspected associates of the gun-runner, namely: Umar Khalil MUHAMMED and Mohammed Yakubu TAHIR aka Mallam YARO, on 2nd March, 2016. MUHAMMED was arrested at Layin Oscar in Jos South LGA, while TAHIR was picked up at Mista Ali area, along Jos-Zaria road in Bassa LGA. The duo are accomplices and active marketers of ABUBAKAR and his products to criminal elements in the North-Central region of the Country. In strengthening its counter-terrorism strategy, the Service also arrested one Armaya’u YAKUBU aka Ali Tekwando, Yakubu SULE and Usman IBRAHIM on 3rd March, 2016, at Hayin Danmani area in Kaduna metropolis. The trio were members of an extremist cell under the coordination of YAKUBU, with affiliation to the proscribed extremist group, ANSARU and have been perfecting plans to travel to Sudan, for terrorist training with other radical elements of the group. The Service wish to reemphasize its resolve to sustain the fight against organized vices and criminalities by terrorists, kidnappers, fraudsters and other deviant elements in the Country. The Service also wish to urge law abiding Nigerians and indeed, all residents to continue to support law enforcement/security agencies, with proactive and actionable intelligence, for the sustenance of peace, law and order. President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, congratulated elder statesman and former President Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR), as he turns 79 years old tomorrow (March 5, 2016), stating that many generations will remain grateful to him (Obasanjo) for his legacies of heralding smooth transitions in many countries. OBJ-and-Buhari In a statement by Special Adviser to the President (Media& Publicity), Femi Adesina, President Buhari affirmed that the former president, who is approaching the octogenarian cycle, has contributed immensely to the institutionalization of democracy in Nigeria and Africa through his personal sacrifice, extensive local and international networks, and God-given wisdom. The statement read: “President Buhari believes that Chief Obasanjo’s place in global history is assured for successfully handing over power to a civilian government in 1979 after serving as a military Head of State, and returning to power in 1999 through elections to stabilize the polity, during which he most remarkably negotiated a debt relief for Nigeria. “The President warmly commends Chief Obasanjo’s vision and commitment to the growth of Nigeria and Africa, which translated into a historical growth rate of 6 percent for the Nigerian economy after a long period of slow growth, and also created a rippling effect that buoyed other African economies. “As he turns 79, the President avers that the former president’s regular shuttles across Nigeria and Africa to counsel on economic, social and political issues, and his willingness to head election monitoring teams that have heralded smooth transitions in many countries are legacies which generations will remain grateful. “President Buhari prays that the Almighty God will grant the Balogun of the Owu lineage, who is also the Ekerin Balogun of the Egba clan, long life and strength to continue his service to humanity.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/obj-79-generations-will-remain-grateful-to-obasanjo-buhari/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

By Peter Duru A clearer picture of why Fulani herdsmen invaded Agatu local government area of Benue state emerged, Friday, at a stakeholders meeting organised by the Inspector General Of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase, when the leader of the herdsmen in the besieged community, Ardo Boderi, claimed that over 10,000 cattle were allegedly killed by people of the area. The meeting held in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, had in attendance top Benue State government functionaries, chiefs and stakeholders from Agatu and Fulani leaders in both Benue and Nasarawa state and was presided over by the IGP. Ado Boderi, who spoke on behalf of the Fulani community insisted that the act sparked off the crisis but decried the role being played by criminal elements from both sides which he claimed escalated the crisis. On his part, Akpa Iduh who spoke on behalf of the Agatu people, said the Fulani were bent on taking over Agatu land hence their resort to recruiting mercenaries to wipe out his people. He lamented that the crisis had escalated to a war situation where women, children and the elderly were killed indiscriminately by the invaders and urged the authorities to stop the carnage in Agatu land. Following a news eport carried by the Vanguard newspaper that Ghana has placed a ban on some imported goods from Nigeria, the office of Ghana Consulate-General has in a statement debunked the claim, saying that at no point did the Ghanaian authorities ban any imported goods from Nigeria. Vanguard had on February 18, 2016 in a report titled: ‘Ghana bans goods from Nigeria, other countries’ stated that Ghana has prohibited some items from entry into its domains, following Nigeria’s footsteps that restricted 41 items from access to foreign exchange, adding that Ghana had however placed a ban on some goods from being imported into the country. The statement reads: “The Ghana High Commission would wish to state categorically that the (story) is false and does not reflect the position of the Ghanaian Government or that of the Hon. Minister of Trade and Industry of Ghana, Mr. Ekwow Spio-Grbarah, as alleged by the Vanguard report.” www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/ghana-denies-banning-imported-goods-from-nigeria/ |

The naira firmed again on Tuesday to trade at 340 against the dollar at the parallel market from 370 on Monday, but traders differ on reasons for the appreciation. The official market rate remained at 197, with President Muhammadu Buhari’s insistence that the currency would not be devalued. Speaking with TheCable in Lagos, Bureau de Change (BDC) operators gave varying reasons for the appreciation of the naira. A BDC agent, who asked not to be named, said the N35 million deposited by BDCs to the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been refunded, easing capital tension in the market. “We have collected our N35 million, so we have more money to do business with. We can approach some of our sources with money to get dollars,” he said. However, Musa Tairu, another BDC agent, differed in opinion, saying the appreciation of the naira was due to a drop in demand for dollars by most “big companies”. “Giving us our N35 million doesn’t make any difference now. It depends on the demand and the supply,” Tairu said. “Initially, when our N35 million was with them, we still had our own capital we used for our business. Demand determines the market price. “Most of these big companies are not buying for now. They are really running on a loss. All these BUA, like all these Dangote and co. “The price is not favourable at all. By the time you buy for 390 or three eighty something, the sugar we use to buy for N8,000 now they are selling it N15,000, and people are managing, they are all complaining that it is much. “So all the companies say for now, there’s no buying of anything, they would just be selling the ones they have.” The naira hit all-time highs last week but has been recovering as certainty returns to the market. https://www.thecable.ng/naira-firms-340-per-dollar |
Exactly a year, I came to do my shift at Ebola Treatment Center, Yaba Lagos and noted gloomy faces on my colleagues handing over to my team. On enquiry they broke the news that Dr. Abeyor Adedebor had just passed on. Shortly after, her anxious son and husband rushed in to check on her as has become their routine. None of us could look them in the face, talk less of break the sad news. All the boldness I had acquired over the years of medical practice, that empathic but detached attitude to breaking sad news eluded me. One of the most miserable instances of my practice. Abeyor was the consultant at the First Consultant hospital Obalende who made the diagnosis of Ebola on American - Liberian diplomat, Mr Sawyer. Identifying and diagnosing ebola at that time in Nigeria was a medical feat, most of us never saw it, didn't know the presentation. I would never have guessed, most of my colleagues too, but Abeyor did, and by that she saved Nigeria. She didn't end it there, when Sawyer insisted on being let off, when he made some high profile calls that threatened Abeyor to let him go, this lady didn't bulge. She insisted that he be quarantined till status verified. She placed her own calls to the high and mighty in the lagos state govt and ministry of health. It was alleged that she even had to call the minister of health to be able to hold Sawyer down. The usual Nigerian "do you know who I am?" nearly ruined a nation. But Abeyor was also high and mighty. And she was tough. Her courage however caused her her life. She died slowly, and painfully. She was in coma for weeks. Brain dead for weeks. Suffered sever intense diarrhoea and bleeding from everywhere. Abeyor had sores all over her body with sever hypertension that resulted in several strokes even while she was in coma. She was the worst case of ebola I ever saw. She died for all of us. For those of us who defend looters that steal on our behalf, those whose greed has devastated our country and mortgaged our national destiny, whose gluttony has kept the health infrastructure down making Nigeria the highest exporter of medical brains, spare a moment of thought for this brave woman and her family, and other health personnel like justina ejelonu that died for us, if it touches your heart please also wish the rest who toil day and night to keep us safe from disease well . The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered N381m from Mrs. Omolara Amosu, the wife of the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu. Sources within the EFCC said on Saturday that the money was recovered in three tranches: N180m, N101m and N100m. The detective told our correspondent that the money was traced from the account of the Nigeria Air Force to the bank accounts of a company in which Amosu’s wife is a director. He added that Amosu’s wife is a signatory to the accounts. He said, “We recovered N381m from Amosu’s wife, Omolara. Initially, we recovered N180m from her account before another N101m and then N100m. These were monies transferred from Air Force accounts.” Explaining how the money was diverted, the detective added, “They (Air Force officers) sent the money to an account where their wives have interests or are signatories without doing anything.” A second source within the EFCC told our correspondent that more properties belonging to the immediate past Chief of Accounts and Budgeting of NAF, Air Vice Marshal J.B. Adigun, had been seized. The detective said a property, which is a quarry located in Ogun State, had equipment worth about $600,000. He, however, did not state the value of the property. Two weeks ago, houses worth over N2bn in Ikoyi and Victoria Island allegedly belonging to Adigun were seized. The source said, “Adigun is still here with us. We recovered a quarry which he owns. In the quarry there were pieces of equipment worth about $600,000. They have all been impounded and investigations are ongoing.” Amosu, Adigun and over nine air force officers are currently under investigation by the anti-graft agency for the procurement of equipment which was said not to be transparent. Since his detention, Amosu had been quizzed over the procurement of two second-hand Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at a cost of $136.9m. The helicopters were alleged not to be operationally airworthy at the time of delivery while a brand new unit of such helicopters costs about $30m. Meanwhile, it was learnt that Amosu and some other officers would be charged to court as soon as the holding charge which the EFCC obtained in court to hold the officers for 30 days from January 28 lapses. A detective said, “Amosu will be charged to court anytime from now. Recall that we obtained a holding charge from a court to hold him for a maximum of 30 days. We are rounding off our investigations and anytime from now, he will be charged to court.” The PUNCH had exclusively reported on February 11 that the EFCC had seized houses and other properties belonging to the immediate past Chief of Air Staff and other senior military officers worth N5bn. According to the report, the properties, which were seized in the Ikoyi, Ikeja GRA and Badagry areas of Lagos State, allegedly belonged to Amosu; the immediate past Chief of Accounts and Budgeting of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal J.B. Adigun; and Air Commodore O. O. Gbadebo, who was the Director of Finance and Budget at NAF. A source, who spoke to The PUNCH had said, “We have sealed a block of 12 luxury flats, located on Agodogba Street, Park View Estate, Ikoyi, belonging to Adigun. It is worth over N1.7bn. The same Adigun also owns another block of luxury flats on Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. It is worth N1.8bn. “A parcel of land, located on Bourdillon Drive, Ikoyi, worth N908m, belonging to Adigun has also been seized by the EFCC operatives.” The source added that six other properties had been traced to Adigun, including a set of four terrace houses on Agede Street, off Aminu Kano in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja. He stated that the properties traced to Amosu were located in the Ikeja area of Lagos metropolis. The operative said apart from the buildings, Amosu’s vehicles had also been confiscated by the anti-graft agency. He added, “Amosu confessed to owning an ultra-modern hospital on Adeniyi Jones Avenue in Ikeja. The hospital, St Solomon Health Care Limited, which is worth about N85m, has been sealed off. “A house located on Adeyemo Alakija Street, GRA Ikeja, near the Ghanaian High Commission, which belongs to Amosu has also been sealed. It is worth over N200m.” www.punchng.com/air-force-chiefs-wife-amosu-returns-stolen-n381m-to-fg/ |

Despite the orgy of violence across Rivers State, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, is maintaining a slight lead over his Peoples Democratic Party rival, Nyisom Wike, in the early governorship results obtained from the oil-rich state. Results so far declared in some polling units across the state on Saturday evening showed that the APC and the PDP earned victories in their major areas. The Director of Communications for Peterside’s Greater Together Campaign Organisation, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said: “In Port Harcourt Ward 018 Polling Unit 012, APC scored 130, while PDP received 84 votes. However in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Ward 003 PU 001, PDP scored 62 votes and APC recorded 41. In Eleme Alode Ward 2, out of the 11 available polling units, APC won in nine, while PDP secured victory in two. “The results await the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s), confirmation and announcement,” Semenitari stated. www.thenationonlineng.net/new/peterside-leads-in-rivers/ |

Ex-Governor Sheriff Delivered Only 241 Votes in his Ward to Goodluck Jonathan ...Chases all PDP supporters out of his house ...As results so far released from 15 LGAs of Borno shows Buhari in a landslide win Former Borno State Governor and factional leader of the PDP in Borno State Ali Modu Sheriff who had collected billions of naira and bragged before President Goodluck Jonathan that he will deliver Borno State to him in the Presidential election has only managed to secure 241 votes for the President in his Ngala Local Government polling unit at the IDP camp. Buhari polled a total of 2,764 votes in Ngala and won all the 15 local government areas so far announced by INEC in Maiduguri. An insider source who is close to the ex-governor had informed KSM News that Sheriff, who was visibly angry by the result had chased all supporters out of his house. Sheriff, according to our source, had confided in a friend that at the moment he didn't know how to look at President Jonathan in the face after promising the President 70 percent of Borno's vote when Jonathan visited Maiduguri on January 24 for the PDP presidential Campaign rally at the empty Ramat Square, venue of the rally. Ali Modu Sheriff who had visibly gone silent in yesterday's poll following his humiliation at a mosque a day before the election where he was booed by worshippers and called "unprintable" names, did all he could to rig the election yesterday, but did not succeed. His strongman Mohammed El-Yakub as reported by KSM News was arrested by the military for being in possession of fake ballot papers. With the results so far trickling in from various local governments in Borno State, it is clear that Ali Modu Sheriff may not be able to deliver even 7% votes for the PDP. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=858455180867804&substory_index=0&id=597720190274639&refid=7&_ft_=qid.6131914394334721155%3Amf_story_key.-4002876626403558375%3Aei.6131914397980464021.6021761879963.19.0&__tn__=%2As
