A 13-year-old boy from the city of Arraba in northern Israel died on Thursday from apparent complications of the flu, amid a particularly severe season of the virus that has already caused the deaths of several children in recent weeks.

According to a statement from Ziv Medical Center in Safed, where the boy was hospitalized, the teen had no underlying conditions, and initially showed only minor symptoms before developing what appeared to be pneumonia.

When his condition worsened at home on Thursday, he was taken to the hospital where he was assessed to be in critical condition, and was sedated and intubated.

“Unfortunately, despite the intensive treatment and efforts to save him, the boy passed away a short time after his arrival,” the hospital said.

This year has seen a significant rise in morbidity among flu cases, the highest since 2012, according to Health Ministry data.
The surge is seen across all age groups, and particularly among those aged 2-18, prompting calls by public health experts that everybody, and particularly those who are especially vulnerable, go to receive a seasonal flu vaccine.

Health authorities have emphasized that the most of the severe cases have been among the unvaccinated.

So far this month, a 5-year-old boy from Bat Yam and a 5-year-old girl in Kfar Saba have died from the flu, as has a 40-year-old woman in Beersheba. In December, a 13-year-old girl from Elad and an 18-year-old man from Jerusalem also died from the virus.

From the start of this season through last week, some 2,057 patients in Israel have been hospitalized due to the flu, across 13 hospitals, according to the Israel Center for Disease Control. Of them, 65 were pregnant women, 1,372 were other adults, and 620 were children.

There has also been a smaller rise in morbidity among coronavirus cases.

Israeli forces have killed at least 82 people in Gaza, medical sources told Al Jazeera, including at least 30 people in Gaza City in the hours since Hamas and Israel announced they had reached a ceasefire agreement.

Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif, reporting from Gaza City, said intense Israeli attacks there had “extinguished” the joy people felt at the initial announcement of the ceasefire.

“Just hours ago there was an atmosphere of joy and relief among residents here when the ceasefire announcement was made from Doha, stating that it would take effect in the coming days,” al-Sharif said.

Both Israel and Hamas have publicly acknowledged a ceasefire and captive exchange deal has been reached, although Israel has said some final details are still to be hashed out before the agreement is sealed.

Britain has sanctioned organizations involved in the construction of Israeli settler outposts in the West Bank, a government update shows.

The sanctions target seven settler outposts and organizations and are taken under Britain’s global human rights sanctions regime, the notice shows.

Those sanctioned include Amana, the settlement movement’s development arm, which Britain says is “involved in the construction of illegal settler outposts and providing funding and other economic resources for Israeli settlers involved in threatening and perpetrating acts of aggression and violence against Palestinian communities in the West Bank.”

Amana was sanctioned by Canada in June and US officials have told The Times of Israel that the Biden administration is considering the step as well.

Amana is the most prominent Israeli development organization in the West Bank and settler leaders have been urgently lobbying the Israeli government to try to thwart international sanctions in recent months.

While the international community considers all settlements illegal, Israel differentiates between settlement homes built and permitted by the Defense Ministry on land owned by the state, and illegal outposts built without the necessary permits, often on private Palestinian land.

Outpost residents have often been cited as perpetrators of attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank, which are very rarely prosecuted by Israel and have led to sanctions by Western countries over the past year.

Gaza Civil Defense said the Al-Tabi’in school was housing displaced Palestinians in the Al-Daraj neighborhood in the eastern part of Gaza City when it was hit overnight into Saturday.

“We recovered at least 90 people who had been killed,” spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told CNN, adding that “many of them are torn apart, many are still unidentified.”

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed to CNN that it hit the school, saying its air force “precisely struck Hamas terrorists operating within a Hamas command and control center embedded” in the building.

In its statement, the military claimed the “command and control center served as a hideout for Hamas terrorists and commanders, from which various attacks were planned and advanced against IDF troops and the State of Israel.”

When asked by CNN, the IDF did not share any evidence to support this claim.

The military also said that before the airstrike, “numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence information.”

Saturday’s strike is the fifth on a school in Gaza by the Israeli military since last Sunday, according to CNN’s previous reporting. The UN Human Rights Office earlier this week said it was “horrified by the unfolding pattern” of strikes on schools in Gaza, according to a statement on August 5th, adding that “such attacks are escalating.”

Israeli military action in Gaza has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians and injured over 90,000, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. As of early July, nearly 2 million people had been displaced in the enclave – almost its entire population, according to figures from the United Nations.

Israel launched the military offensive on October 7, after militant group Hamas attacked southern Israel. At least 1,200 people were killed, and more than 250 others abducted in the Hamas-led assault, according to Israeli authorities.

A doctor working in a nearby hospital earlier said at least 50 people had been killed in Saturday’s strike.

“Since entering the operating room at 5:00 am [local time] today, there were at least 50 bodies and dozens of wounded,” Dr. Fadl Naim from Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City told CNN, adding that the emergency room at the hospital is completely full of people who have been wounded, and “most of the wounded, unfortunately, have amputations and burns.”

Basal said many of the dead were yet to be identified.
“There are still large quantities of body parts and torn bodies inside Al-Ahli hospital,” he said. “Families are having a hard time identifying their children.”
Airstrikes on multiple school buildings sheltering displaced Palestinians last weekend killed at least 47, including many children, and injured dozens more.

Videos obtained by CNN from the area of last Sunday’s strike – which the IDF also claimed targeted Hamas infrastructure – show extensive destruction and dead bodies in a schoolyard. In the videos, medics and rescuers carry injured children to waiting ambulances.

Palestinian officials told CNN that Israel did not give civilians any warning before the airstrikes occurred.
