well, my late Dad didnt want to touch the money meant for the project at all. when he was sick, we the kids, his relatives and friends all contributed towards his health in a bid to help him survive. when there was nothing that was when the project money was spent.
if not for his family members that declared that his properties would be shared/sold after his 1 year death anniversary (august), then I would have maybe sold 1 of his cars to pay part of the money.

If you and your family were aware of what the money was meant for, why did you and your family use it for something that was not project related?

Just search your conscience, Do you and your family in clear conscience feel/think that the client is not entitled to have his money back?
Just asking because your write up seems as if the client has no right to demand for his money since what it was meant for was not carried out

If someone had owed ur dad dis same amount.and it came to ur know.guy,u would have done same..just plead with the client,but dont make any promise for now.while waiting for the property(ies) to be sold.my prayer for u.is GOD's open doors,favour and more breakthroughs.sorry for ur loss.

He didn't sign any contract with them, more or less verbal agreement. even he had done business with the person a couple of years back

Between you and me, you were not a party to the contract your late father signed with the people after you. However, did your dad get the contract through his company? Is it a limited liability company or a one-man business? If it is the former, then your father’s company is obligated to continue with the contract or return the mobilization fund less whatever has been utilized to commence execution. If it is the latter, nothing for them.

However, seek the counsel of a lawyer to get a proper legal perspective.

The company no longer exists because it is a sole proprietorship business. Also, he was working on other projects which have been handled by his friends.

If no,you have nothing to worry about.
You have no legal binding to pay back the debt.

Me,Myself and I have spoken.

My Late Dad was a Civil Engineer. There was a particular project he was supposed to work on. He charged the client a sum of 8 million which was agreed upon.

He was paid #800k and expecting the rest to complete their work, but when he was to start the work he fell sick.
His sickness started around March last year and due to the COVID-19 lockdown, he couldn't commence work on the project although he did start the foundation aspects.

By June, we discovered his sickness was due to kidney failure. Both family and friends gathered money and when there was no money, the client's money was used to foot his hospital bills in a bit to save his life.

Unfortunately, he did by August, and when the client came to his residence they saw his graveyard and all that.

Now, after 10 months, they have started calling my number and disturbing me regarding the #800k that they paid to my Late Dad. They even threatened to bring a lawyer and all that.

I am not the one they paid to but my late Dad and he is dead now.

To make matters worse, the family is yet to gather concerning sharing/selling properties for the upkeep of his wives and children (because he practiced polygamy).

At the moment, I am still hustling here and there to make ends meet. Not to mention, my mom and siblings are there for me to take care of.
