Politics / No One Beats Nigeria On June 12 –kalu by kaycee250(m): 3:20pm On Jun 03, 2010
Pillar of Sports Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu Wednesday put compatriots on a high when he declared that the best Argentina can get from the Eagles on June 12 is a barren draw even with all the Lionel Messis and Diego Militos.

Kalu hinged his confidence on the magic date which not only stands tall inthe march towards Nigeria's neo- democracy, but also is remarkable in the nation's soccer history. "Tell it in Buenos Aires, hear me out in Cordoba, let them know in Rosario", Kalu announced, "no one ever beat Nigeria on June 12 in a FIFA championship match"

He explained it all"It started with the Argies at the Scotland ' 89 U-17 competition when they held the Eaglets to a goalless draw at Dens Park Dundee on Victor Nosa Ikpeba's birthday. The next June 12 game was between Super Eagles and England at the Korea\ Japan World Cup in Nagai.Another 0-0 draw. Then came June 12,2005 at the Holland World Youth Championships.Brazil forced the Flying Eagles to another barren draw."

June 12, the Pillar of Sp0rts pointed out, is a bad day for the South Americans who were bungled out of the 2002 Mundial on that date by Sweden. “The man who led the Swedes to send Argentina out in the first round is the same Lars Lagerback whose job is to take The Eagles to South Africa.I must admit that there was a time the Argentines won a June 12 match 2-1 against Holland in Leon at the Mexico' 83 U-20 championships. It was an ill-tempered duel and one of the referees was our own Festus Bolaji Okubule,” Kalu added.

Kalu said although the June 12 invincibility started even before the passage of democracy icon Chief Moshood Abiola, it has continued to favour Nigerian soccer. “Honestly, it is intriguing. You know anytime we talk of June 12 we remember Chief Abiola. He was the first Pillar of Sports.Maybe, that is the way sports has chosen to honour the man who remains overlooked by the federal government.Am sure his spirit will be with the Eagles.

And do not forget that Lagerback,Vincent Enyeama,Mikel Obi, Taiye Taiwo,Chinedu Obasi, Sanni Keita and Obinna Nsofor are June 12 veterans".

Foreign Affairs / Polish Leader, 95 Others Dead In Russia Jet Crash by kaycee250(m): 12:18pm On Apr 10, 2010
Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 96, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the Soviet-era Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

On board were the army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Russia's Emergency Ministry said there were 96 dead, 88 part of a Polish state delegation. Poland's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up for the roughly 1 1/2-hour flight from Warsaw's main airport.

"We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland," Paszkowski said. "We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed."

The governor of the Smolensk region, where the crash took place about 11 a.m. (0700 GMT), also said no one survived.

State news channel Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the red and white national colors of Poland stuck up from the debris.

"The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart," regional governor Sergei Anufriev said on Rossiya-24. "Nobody has survived the disaster."

The presidential Tu-154 was at least 20 years old. Polish officials have long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country's leaders but said they lacked the funds. According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years. The Russian carrier Aeroflot recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.

The presidential plane was fully overhauled in December in Russia, the general director of the Aviakor plant in Samara told Rossiya-24. The plant repaired the plane's three engines, retrofitted electronic and navigation equipment and updated the interior, Alexei Gusev said. He said there could be no doubts that the plane was flightworthy.

Polish-Russian relations had been improving of late after being poisoned for decades over the Katyn massacre.

Russia never has formally apologized for the murders of some 22,000 Polish officers, but Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest near Katyn was seen as a gesture of goodwill toward reconciliation. Rossiya-24 showed hundreds of people around the Katyn monument, many holding Polish flags, some weeping.

President Dmitry Medvedev sent his condolences and promised to work closely with Poland in investigating the crash.

"Russia shares the grief and mourning of Poland," Medvedev said in a statement posted on the Kremlin Web site. "Please accept the most sincere condolences to the Polish people, words of compassion and support to relatives and friends of those who perished."

Putin has been put in charge of a commission investigating the crash, the Kremlin said.

In Warsaw, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an extraordinary meeting of his Cabinet and the national flag was lowered to half-staff at the presidential palace, where people gathered to lay flowers and light candles.

Black ribbons appeared in some windows in the Polish capital.

Poland's president is commander in chief of its armed forces but the position's domestic duties are chiefly symbolic. Kaczynski, 60, became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year's presidential vote.

The nationalist conservative was the twin brother of Poland's opposition leader, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Kaczynski's wife, Maria, was an economist. They had a daughter, Marta, and two granddaughters.

Kaczynski had said he would seek a second term in presidential elections this fall. He was expected to face an uphill struggle against Parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of Tusk's governing Civic Platform party.

According to the constitution, Komorowski would take over presidential duties.

Klaus Bachmann, a professor of politics at Wroclaw University, said the president "wasn't very popular and it was quite obvious that he would lose the upcoming elections."

"The open question is what will Kaczynski's party and his brother do; he might decide to run for president himself, he might also consider to withdraw from politics at all because he had a very very close link to his brother and I can't imagine how much shocked he must be."

Poland, a nation of 38 million people, is by far the largest of the 10 formerly communist countries that have joined the European Union in recent years.

Last year, Poland was the only EU nation to avoid recession and posted economic growth of 1.7 percent.

It has become a firm U.S. ally in the region since the fall of communism — a stance that crosses party lines.

The country sent troops to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and recently boosted its contingent in Afghanistan to some 2,600 soldiers.

U.S. Patriot missiles are expected to be deployed in Poland this year. That was a Polish condition for a 2008 deal — backed by both Kaczynski and Tusk — to host long-range missile defense interceptors.

The deal, which was struck by the Bush administration, angered Russia and was later reconfigured under President Barack Obama's administration.

Under the Obama plan, Poland would host a different type of missile defense interceptors as part of a more mobile system and at a later date, probably not until 2018.

Kaczynski is the first serving Polish leader to die since exiled World War II-era leader Gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski in a plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943.

Politics / Spousal Abuse: Presidential Style by kaycee250(m): 9:33am On Apr 09, 2010
Reacting to a recent reported visit of religious leaders to ailing Nigerian president Yar' Adua, Wole Soyinka alleged that the president was a victim of spousal abuse. The Nobel laureate made the remarks while talking to reporters after delivering a lecture titled ‘Leadership and Follower-ship as shared responsibility’ at an event organized by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG). The president was last seen in public late in 2009 and a lot has been written about his illness and probable incapacitation as well as the role of his wife, Turai in the ensuing political struggles. However not to my knowledge has anyone really looked at the relationship of the "first" couple in the context of spousal abuse. Wole Soyinka's analysis really got me thinking.

Spousal abuse can be broadly defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both partners in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, friends or cohabitation. There are two common misconceptions about this topic. Firstly, spousal abuse is not limited in any way to physical abuse and goes much further than physical beatings. There are other abuses that are just as damaging and serious including verbal and emotional abuse, psychological abuse, financial abuse, and sexual abuse. Secondly, women, although in the majority, are not the only victims of physical or emotional abuse. Spousal abuse is committed by both males and females in relationships. Spousal abuse involving men is often overlooked or ignored by society due to the stigma. In the United States for example, where spousal abuse has been studied extensively as a public health problem, it is estimated that men are 32 percent less likely than women to report any form of violent victimization. Studies also show that women are far more likely to enlist help and to use weapons in abusing their spouses. So is Yar' Adua a victim of spousal abuse?

Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, the elder brother to President Yar'Adua was reported to have told the people of Katsina (before Umaru Yar' Adua became governor) that any vote for his younger brother was a vote for Turai. This was a tacit acknowledgement of Turai’s influence in the Yar'Adua household. There is also a general belief that for his wife, Turai Yar'Adua, President Umaru Yar'Adua most likely would not have contested the 2007 presidential election, in consideration of his failing health.

Such is the commanding influence of Turai who has been Nigeria's first lady since 2007 and who has been likened to Eva Peron of Argentina. Strong-willed, cold-blooded and calculating, she is alleged to have commanded the loyalty of erstwhile cabinet ministers and state governors. Political wannabes continually flocked to her patronage.

Her husband, President Yar' Adua is known to have chronic kidney problems as a result of a medical condition called Churg-Strauss syndrome. His kidneys having failed, he had been on dialysis for quite some time, necessitating several medical visits overseas, even while he was still governor of Katsina state. In November 2009, he was rushed to Saudi Arabia for treatment, having taken ill due to an inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the heart, a condition called acute pericarditis. This condition is a known complication of end-stage kidney failure. While in Saudi, his hospital course was complicated by severe respiratory problems, necessitating his placement on a mechanical ventilator (life support machine). It is also strongly suspected that he also suffered a massive stroke, which left him severely debilitated and incapacitated.

Running a government is no child play. More so, running the federal government of a country like Nigeria. Prior to the president’s evacuation to Saudi, the process of government got so stalled that practically everything came to a halt. A return to power for the ailing president was therefore not only morally wrong but also impractical. In such circumstances, a wife, loving of her husband and her country would have removed her husband from national limelight by championing his immediate resignation, thereby moving the country forward and optimizing conditions for the sick man’s eventual recovery.

Turai however did not reckon as such. She enlisted the help of the much touted cabal and manipulated the apparatus of state, including the judiciary and the military - weapons that she utilized to maximum effect in her attempts to usurp her husband's throne and hold unto power at all costs. She continually deceived Nigerian's about the true state of health of her husband. At a time when the image of the country was being rubbished by civil unrest and a terror plot involving a Nigerian, her actions tarnished whatever good image that was left of her husband while further casting the nation in bad light. In her cunning and scheming, she even stopped the president's mother and family from visiting him thereby depriving her husband of essential ingredients that may have aided his psychological healing. Poor Yar' Adua! If only he could talk.

So much has since happened. Goodluck Jonathan is now Acting President and a semblance of normalcy has returned to government. Reported visits to the president by Islamic clerics and Christian religious leaders have not shed additional light on the president's circumstances. Was Wole Soyinka right in his assertion? Probably so. This is spousal abuse, presidential style!

Politics / Yar'adua In Near Vegetative State - Oyedepo Aide Reveals- Liberty News, Abuja by kaycee250(m): 10:15am On Apr 08, 2010
Unimpeachable facts have emerged for the first time on the true state of President Umar Yar'Adua's health. A close friend of one of the aides to the Presiding Bishop of Living Faith World Outreach Ministries, Dr. David Oyedepo has revealed that contrary to the recent bashing of Bishop David Oyedepo by Nigerians over his non-disclosure of the outcome of his visit to Umar Yar'Adua, the Bishop and other Christian leaders who visited and prayed for the sick president should actually be commended. The aide was alleged to have revealed that reporting what was seen and experienced in Aso rock during the visit of the men of God to Yar'Adua could ignite an unprecedented civil unrest in Nigeria and further consolidate public hatred for the First Lady Mrs. Turai Yar'Adua.

The source swore that his friend, the aide to the Bishop heard Dr. Oyedepo praying afterward because he was deeply disturbed over the level of deteriorating in the physical condition of Umar Yar'Adua and that ordinary Nigerians had been right all along when they suggested that Yar'Adua was in a vegetative state.

According to the aide, Yar'Adua was said to have been so emaciated and sunken. He was met positioned in near upright state specifically for the visit of the Christian leaders and that it was obvious that he was in serious pain throughout the brief visit. Yar'Adua was described as "positively oblivious of his surrounding and seemed lost most of the time". Before the end of the short prayer, "he had fallen flat on the chair which embarrassed the First Lady. He remained motionless afterward, just lying on the chair without talking or shaking anyone although his eyes remained wide open, but he just stared blank into space".

It was also revealed that contrary to the insinuation that the team spent close to 10 minutes with Yar'Adua, they actually spent less than 5 minutes and were told that he had to rest immediately after the second prayer was said by Bishop David Oyedepo. Contrary to the 'grunt' widely credited to Pastor Kure which he allegedly translated to imply an 'amen', the source said that what was uttered was a 'groan' signifying critical level of pain.

Our source confirmed that Yar'Adua is indeed alive but in a vegetative state and that the person the Christian leaders saw would definitely not be able to eat or drink as widely reported nor walk or talk. He added that Turai Yar’Adua was the de facto person in charge as she allegedly took control and choreographed the entire visit including 'revealing' to the Christian leaders that the state they saw Yar'Adua was actually an improvement over what he was before then and that she appeared very desperate in wanting them to believe her statement. After leaving Yar'Adua, the men of God were still held up for upward of one hour by Mrs. Turai Yar'Adua in another large visitors' room inside Aso Rock. She was reported to have used the opportunity to tell them the tribulations she has passed through since president Yar'Adua took ill.

The source added that it was a very difficult choice for Dr. Oyedepo and the other Christian leaders who unlike their Islamic counterparts were afraid of the wrath of God if they should face Nigerians and lie to them. "Hence, instead of lying to Nigerians, the Christian elders decided to be guided by the word of God in Proverbs 16:21 'The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips' hence their prudent silence".
