FashionTry The Great Wardrobe Workout by kayleyons(op): 8:06am On May 14, 2015
Standing in front of the changing-room mirror, stomach sucked in and legs elegantly crossed, I thought my new designer trousers were a perfect fit.

Until I had to run for the bus and found I could hardly lift my knees.

If only, I thought, I had jogged around the shop instead of posing, I’d have gone for a larger size. I’ve made the same mistake with dresses: flattering in front of a mirror, yet they rode up with indecent haste the minute I sat down.

But no more: I now follow the Great Wardrobe Workout, designed to strain the seams of any outfit. Here are the five moves you need to know…

PENCIL SKIRT KNEE LIFT

We’ve all done it – bought a fashionable, figure-hugging pencil skirt only to realise, too late, that it’s so tight you can’t actually put one foot in front of the other without hoisting the hem up to embarrassing heights in a most unladylike manner.

short prom dresses uk

To avoid this expensive error, try jogging on the spot in your skirt, lifting your knees as high as you can.

HIGH HEELS TIPTOE TEST

When buying a pair of shoes, of course I walk around the shop to try them out. Even so, several times I’ve gone home wearing shoes that felt comfortable in the shop but within days are falling off my feet.

To avoid this problem, put on the new shoes and then stand on your tiptoes.

CLINGY FROCK SQUAT

Not a flattering exercise, but essential for buying a fitted dress.

If, like me, you spend most of your life sitting at a desk, there’s no point staying vertical to try one on. Instead, squat down with your bottom sticking out and notice the effect.

SLIT SKIRT DIP

If you’ve got a dress or skirt with a fashionable side split, here’s how to ensure you show enough leg to keep it sexy but never indecent.

With feet slightly apart, try to touch your toes on the side without the split, while paying close attention to what’s happening on the other side.

BUTTON-POPPING SHIRT STRETCH

lA core exercise, designed to make sure you’re never going to burst any buttons or expose any flashes of flesh. Do up the shirt, then flex your arm muscles as if you’re lifting weights, at the same time pulling your shoulders apart.

FashionBeverly Johnson Tells The Story Behind The Fame In The Face That Changed It All by kayleyons(op): 9:57am On May 11, 2015
Many of us know Beverly Johnson because of the headlines, the face and the fame she has acquired over the years, but few of us really know the woman behind it all---and the story as to how she became to be the woman the world now recognizes. That is until now.

This year Beverly Johnson (along with acclaimed writer Allison Samuels) gives us THE FACE THAT CHANGED IT ALL. It's a look not only at the success that Beverly has achieved but the price that has come along with her life both publicly and privately.

For me the book is full of revelations that I was completely unaware of. We learn about her childhood, growing up in a time when the world was changing and being in a home where those changes weren't always understood and dealt with. We're able to learn of the strong work ethic of her father and what that taught Beverly about achieving things for herself.

Some recognize Beverly instantly for being the first African-American woman on the cover of Vogue---and that is indeed a major accomplishment. In the book, however, we are also able to take the road that would lead her to fame, one hard-fought situation at a time. Regardless of what we might believe Beverly allows us to know that being in the public life is not all fun, games and parties. It's a daily struggle that can make or break you. In the chapter SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK AND ROLL she shares this: "What was clear was that the fashion industry had the potential to crush even the best and strongest ofus. You life was not your own... It sounds fun, and it can be for a time, but it can also emotionally stunt you, leaving you ill-equipped to face the future."

Fame didn't come easy for Beverly. She talks about in the book about the lack of places for women of color not just in modeling but acting, and how it was another one of the things that many women had to contend with. Ironically this is a conversation that continues to our day. It's just one of the comparisons you will see as you are looking at her path then and the path of other models and actresses now.

We also see the journey that Beverly had to travel when it came to her family, namely her marriage and kids. This was something I knew NOTHING about before reading the book, but it once again reminds us that no matter who you are we all have to deal with the troubles that life throws our way. What matters is what you are able to learn and how much you are able to grow moving forward.

Regardless of what your profession or what you think you know about the celebrity life or even more specifically Beverly Johnson, this book is definitely well worth your time. It allows you to see the woman in her totality: flaws and all, and I think it will motivate you to not just be your best but to bring your best to everything you do.

FashionUnstainable Shirts Are The Latest Example Of Wearable Tech. But Do They Work? by kayleyons(op): 8:52am On May 07, 2015
The quest for the perfect white shirt is, for some of us, never-ending: the right fit, fabric, crispness and collar. Not me. I hate white shirts because I no longer work in catering. My never-ending quest is for clothes that hide my clumsiness, and that aren’t simply black. I eat like a toddler; half my wardrobe betrays my lunch like a fruity moodboard (last weekend I ruined a pink vest with unforced rhubarb stains). This is where wearable tech comes in. Not the rings that alert you to a WhatsApp message or a Fitbit wristband, which scolds you for sitting down, but something that repels coffee or E Mono’s kebab sauce, something that guards you from your sweat. Witchcraft, essentially, is what I’m after.

Elizabeth & Clarke make shirts and tops with humorous names like “Liz Lemon” (a plain white T-shirt) and “The Olsen” (an off-the-shoulder long-sleeve and homage to the Row designers). Now they’ve branched into affordable wearable tech with a new line of unstainable tops, which they plan to launch next week after being pledged about 10 times their goal on Kickstarter. A stack engineer called Juan (“Hola!” he writes on the site) is behind the technology, which is pretty self-explanatory: the unstainable shirt is made from crepe de chine, so it looks normal enough, but it’s actually covered in a series of tiny fibres. These fibres use nanotechnology to repel virtually any water-based or oil-based liquid – beetroot, coffee, gob or sweat – making it evaporate before even touching the fabric. Still with me? Because each fibre is 100,000 times smaller than a grain of sand, you can’t see or feel them, but they’re there, suspending the spilled liquid above the fabric and stopping it from ever reaching the shirt.

The majority of wearable tech speaks to me on very few levels. So how wearable is this? A shirt is a shirt, but it’s nicely fitted and colours are pretty enough, if pastel or white is your bag. It feels hot and synthetic, but entirely wearable without making its wearer feel like a matchstick. More important, though, is whether it works. Does it actually repel liquid? We tested it out with a glass of beetroot juice in the Guardian kitchen ...

FashionThe Secret Behind Anne Hathaway's Otherworldly Met Gala Look by kayleyons(op): 7:40am On May 05, 2015
For the Met Gala tonight, Anne Hathaway slipped into a Ralph Lauren gown that looked less like fabric and more like pure liquid gold. (Okay, I've never seen liquid gold, but this is exactly how I would imagine it.) Her makeup for the evening also exhibited a hyper-real quality. "I wanted her to look otherworldly," said makeup artist Kate Lee. "And since the look was all about the dress, I didn't want to do anything that would overshadow that."

https://www.allure.com/beauty-trends/blogs/daily-beauty-reporter/2015/05/04/hathaway_vertical_rexusa_2702041at.jpg

To achieve a look that was surreal yet understated, Lee started with the skin, evening things out with Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet Smooth-Effect foundation in a shade that matched Hathaway'a skin tone exactly. "I always have the same approach with my alabaster clients," she said. "Their skin tone is naturally beautiful and it just doesn't look right if you try to warm it up." Next, Lee added highlights to the cheekbones and jawline using a liquid luminizer from Chantecaille (their Liquid Lumière Highlighting Fluid), followed by her favorite cream blush—Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel in Cheeky—to contour underneath the cheekbones. "I like it because you can use it as a contour on pale skin without adding too much color." Then, she smudged a bit of pale gray eye shadow along the creases of the eyes, coated her top and bottom lashes with mascara (this makes the eyes wider and rounder-looking, Lee says), and topped the center of her lips with a "crystal clear" lip gloss—new Chanel product set to hit shelves this September (Gloss Volume Plumping Lipgloss). For her nails, manicurist Alicia Torello continued the minimal theme with two coats of Revlon ColorStay Gel Envy in Checkmate, a pretty sheer nude.

The last element of the look was Hathaway's brows. "Annie has amazing eyebrows and she actually requested that we emphasize them tonight," said Lee, who made them slightly fuller. "It's not a sculpted, angular brow, however, it's just a little fuller, like the best version of a natural brow you could have. You can still see every little hair." To do that, Lee used her go-to technique. "First, I brush the brows down toward the eyes so that you can see where the highest part of the brow is. Then, I fill in any sparse areas with a brown pencil and raise the arch upwards ever so slightly. Once that's done, I brush the brows up, fill in any sparse areas that I've missed, and finish with a clear brow gel (Lee likes Anastasia Brow Gel). If there are any hard lines, I soften them with an angled eyeliner brush."

FashionUnderstanding What Different Body Blemishes Mean by kayleyons(op): 8:33am On May 01, 2015
Spots can seem like a real mystery. One minute your skin is clear, the next it's covered in blemishes. Or maybe you're constantly fighting with pimples in the same areas on your face or body. In a two-part series we look at what spots in certain areas mean and what you can do to fight them. This week: blemishes on the body.

The back

Back acne is often dubbed 'bacne' and can be a real pain in the, well, back.

"Back acne (bacne) tends to be more prevalent in men, but is evidenced in both sexes and is commonly caused by irritation of the skin," Dr Anita Sturnham, from the NURISS Skincare & Wellness Clinic, explained.

"Anything that repeatedly rubs against the skin, such as backpacks, rough massages, tight fitting clothing, weight lifting machines which press on the shoulder area can irritate the skin and aggravate acne in that area."

https://wpc.5011.edgecastcdn.net/805011/origin/content/content/images/0719/ae75775c-ed98-43f4-a45a-be57e78dbe7c_636x978.jpg

So if you're struggling with impurities in this area, consider what your back comes in contact with. Wear loose, cotton clothing and go easy on the weight machines or massages for a few weeks to see if things improve.

Arms

If you suffer from raised pimples that look like goosebumps on your arms, it's likely you have keratosis pilaris. There's no need to panic, as it's very common and completely harmless. It just means that you have too much of a protein called keratin and it's building up under your skin. Cream that contain salicylic acid, lactic acid or urea are usually the best way to go. Priori Hand & Body Revitalizing Lotion has rave reviews from keratosis pilaris sufferers, who say it really helps with smoothing the affected area. Ameliorate's Skin Smoothing Body Lotion also goes a long way for those with bumpy arms.

Chest

Spots on the chest are often associated with lung problems. If you smoke or don't spend much time outdoors in fresh air, you could notice blemishes on your torso. Kicking the cigarette habit is step one for smokers, while city dwellers should consider a trip to the countryside or seaside. Also try and keep your diet healthy and balanced.

Shoulders

It might not seem obvious, but spotty shoulders could point to a digestive problem. If you've noticed a change in your bowel habits, feel constantly worried and also suffer from pimples on your shoulders, try drinking a lot of green tea and upping your fibre intake. Of course you should see a doctor if these problems are extreme and/or consistent.

FashionMaster The Milkmaid Braid by kayleyons(op): 7:41am On Apr 29, 2015
Coming up with new ways to wear your hair is always hard and when the warmer weather starts to creep in, it's even trickier to know how to wear it without ending up a sweaty mess with frizzy locks. But one way to keep cool and look the business without resorting to a boring ponytail or top knot, is by doing a milkmaid braid.

If you're not familiar with the term, you might be with the appearance: a thick plait that looks like it runs all the way around your head, from behind each ear. It's a style that has been favoured by many celebrities over the years, including British actresses Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley and fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen. But how do you achieve such a complex looking style?

It's actually easier than you might think. Once your hair is brushed through, put it in a middle parting so that both sides have equal amounts of hair. If you want to, rub a little styling cream into the roots, as this can make it easier to work with and keep in place.

Plait one side of your hair and fix with an elastic band, and then the other. It can help to thicken the end of the plait by gently pulling on the hair. Once both sides are done, take one plait and pull it over the top of your head, fixing it behind the opposite ear with crossed kirby grips in the same colour as your tresses. Once it's secure, wrap the other one over the top, ensuring it is about an inch behind the hairline so that you'll be able to see the plaits from the front - and remember, it doesn't need to be neat! Hold them both in place with hair pins, slightly pinning the plaits together to make it extra secure. Spray a little hairspray over the top, but don't worry about flyaways; a few can add to the bohemian nature of the look which is so associated with the likes of Sienna and Mary-Kate.

FashionTangles Waiting To Happen – Or Ultra-cool Ways To Channel Seventies Rock'n'roll by kayleyons(op): 8:09am On Apr 27, 2015
I have a confession to make. My name is not Lola and I am not a showgirl; I don’t wear feathers in my hair and my dress is cut down to nowhere near there. Sorry, Mr Manilow, for that mangling – but as the fringe began to fly on the catwalks for spring/summer, the sorry story of the shimmying showgirl sprang immediately to mind. And we all know what happened to her…

So perhaps my fear of fringe is down to the fact that my severe lack of co-ordination means I can no more merengue or do the cha-cha than see myself chilling at Coachella, where the hippie-de-luxe take on the trim – or “sexy Pocahontas”, as one fashionable friend calls it – is de rigueur. Or maybe the knowledge that the closest I will ever get to being one of Tina Turner’s fleet-footed back-up dancers is bouncing awkwardly around to “Proud Mary” in my bedroom is what’s keeping me from setting fringing swinging. Because, trust me, I see the temptation in taking a lesson from Stevie Nicks and twirling and whirling your troubles away, and if the rumours are true and Fleetwood Mac do grace the Glastonbury stage, we can expect the fringed shawl to overtake the onesie as the festival garb du jour. But that’s just it – to me, the fantasy of fringe is so couched in the context of performance that in reality it feels like fancy dress.

On a lithe, leggy model, the long strands of Proenza Schouler’s souped-up grass skirts conjure an empowered image of keeping cool in a hot city, teasingly revealing bare flesh. But on anyone who actually lives, works and commutes in that city, they’d end up more closely resembling the grotty grey strings of a much-used mop. Even the party-perfect outfits trimmed with tufts of short fringe shown by Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Marco De Vincenzo would lose their lustre once caught on your cocktail ring or knotted into clumps by a spilt glass of champagne. And all the bugle beads in the world aren’t going to bring back your shine at that point.

FashionGlassons Slated By Ethical Fashion Report by kayleyons(op): 8:15am On Apr 23, 2015
Women's fashion retailer Glassons has received a dismal overall D-minus rating in a new report designed to expose the exploitation of workers in the industry.

The Truth Behind the Barcode: Australian Fashion Report 2015 surveyed 219 fashion brands on their policies, traceability and transparency, monitoring and training, and workers' rights.

The grades indicate the extent to which a company has traced its suppliers and established systems throughout its supply chain that can enable it to prevent and address worker exploitation and modern slavery, the report states.

Glassons received an F ranking for all but the policies category, for which it was ranked D-plus.

The clothing chain's poor ranking follows a string of previous controversies for the clothing chain, including using mannequins with their ribs showing to advertise swimwear, and an ad featuring a woman riding a bull which attracted the ire of animal rights groups.

A Glassons spokeswoman said the company would not be commenting on the report.

The report was created by Baptist World Aid Australia in the wake of the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh - in which 1100 workers lost their lives.

"The event sparked the collective conscience of consumers, retailers, investors and governments to know more about the people producing our clothes and how they are treated," the report states.

Although there were promising signs for the fashion industry, significant problems remained, it said.

The report said the industry was still categorised by poverty level wages with a mere 12 per cent of companies able to demonstrate any action towards paying wages above the legal minimum.

Despite the minimum wage in Bangladesh increasing by 75 per cent since the

fatal Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, it still had the lowest minimum wage in the world, it said.

The report also highlighted a lack of transparency, claiming 91 per cent of companies didn't know where all their cotton came from.

"If companies don't know how and where their products are made, then there's no

way for them to ensure that their workers are protected," the report's authors stated.

Although there were signs of progress, the report said many of the worst overall performers were iconic Australian fashion brands including the Just Group (owner of Just Jeans, Jay Jays, Dotti, Peter Alexander and Portmans), fast retail brands like Ally, Valley Girl, Temt and Industrie, and low cost suppliers like Lowes and Best & Less.

"These companies have all received D or F grades.

"We could find little evidence that any of these fashion retailers were doing much, if anything, to protect workers overseas," the report's authors stated.

"Many of them had little or no publicly available information and/or didn't respond to any of our requests to engage with the research process."

Companies that had made significant improvements included Kmart - which released a complete list of its direct suppliers, the Cotton On Group - which had taken steps to identify suppliers deeper in their supply chain - and H&M, Zara, Country Road and the Sussan Group, which have made efforts to paying better wages for overseas workers, the report said.

FashionThe Hoodie Goes Desi by kayleyons(op): 7:52am On Apr 21, 2015
The caped coat gets an ethnic twist and is now available in Indian fabrics and textures.

Hoodies have been there for ages. However, the once-casual outfit synonymous with post-fitness wear, has acquired a local flavour in the city. It can now be found in Indian designs and fabrics, taking the hoodie to a whole new level. It's a far cry from its sweatshirt avatar of the past. Considering the desi wave spreading across the world, the desi hoodie gives you enough reason to add elan and panache to style with a tinge of patriotism in it.

Local, yet contemporary

India with its rich textiles and craftsmanship effortlessly blends with any style. And a hoodie with a wide array of Indian designs adds another dimension to fusion wear. For who love to have a bit of the tradition in whatever they wear, and yet be contemporary, the Indian hoodie is just perfect example of that.

Play around with it

You can play with a variety of fabrics and textures by opting for khadi, jute, block print hoodie or a handloom cotton fabric hoodies. For a dramatic note, you can wear a sheer hoodie.

How to wear a hoodie best

— You can pair up a white crisp cotton shirt with a hoodie waist-coat to add a little quirkiness to your outfit. For that a girly look, opt for a hoodie waist-coat or a jacket in ikkat or floral prints and wear it over a tube dress. — Wearing a hoodie at work will add authority and style to your simple kurta. If you have a curvaceous body, then go for medium length hooded textured shirts in bright hues, with fitted cigarette pants in black or brown to look effortlessly chic. — For the festive occasion, try wearing a raw silk hoodie with your bright raw silk skirt for the complete Indo-western look.

FashionJunk Food Hits The Catwalk: The Unlikely Fusion Of Fast Food And High Fashion by kayleyons(op): 7:35am On Apr 18, 2015
Fast food and fashion should have nothing in common. They are diametric opposites, ideological adversaries. Fast food is egalitarian, en masse – let them eat Big Macs! It's cheap and cheerful, makes you fat, greasy and garish, and is available on every corner.

Fashion, by contrast, is elitist. It relies on superlative craftsmanship and fine materials, on the expense those ingredients entail. More than anything else, fashion is exclusive – only available to a few; excluding others.

That's the theory, at least. However, chart the rise of 'fast fashion', the Burger King to high fashion's Cordon Bleu. Fast fashion, generally, is a term applied to high-street clothing. The term relates not only to the speed of production – meaning that stores such as Topshop and Zara have not the traditional biannual drops of fresh clothing, but new stock flooding in every week – but of consumption. Cheaply constructed and hence not made to last, fast fashion clothes have a shorter and shorter use-by date coupled with ever-diminishing prices. They're disposable.

https://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article10180107.ece/alternates/w620/5817866.jpg
celebrity dresses
Fast fashion isn't a new phenomenon – the success of Seventies label Biba was that teenagers could buy Biba clothes they saw on TV on Friday night at the store on Saturday, while the high street has been proposing faster and faster deliveries of clothes directly influenced by catwalk fashions.

Today, however, those catwalk fashion themselves have become fast fashion. Witness American designer Jeremy Scott's first collection for Italian fashion house Moschino, presented last February in Milan. Franco Moschino, the label's founder, once showed a 'dinner jacket' buttoned with knives and forks. Its 21st-century reincarnation? Scott's reappropriation of the McDonald's logo, including a deluxe rendering of the chain's tomato-red and mustard-yellow uniforms. Mc-schino's model carried not a hamburger, but the label's latest handbag – which sported an ersatz version of the Golden Arches. M for Moschino, geddit?

It's all a bit tasteless, in my opinion – particularly so closely aping the uniforms sported by near-minimum wage workers in clothes that cost more than their monthly take-home. Nevertheless, Scott's 'Schino is not only selling, but selling out. The label's revenue rose by almost 7 per cent after Scott's first collection. That's because a capsule collection was on sale the morning after the catwalk show, and consumers bought lustily. "Seventy-five per cent of our offer sells immediately," states Jean Monnier, of accessory-only etailer Monnier Frères. "The most talked-about pieces are often sold out on the day after the show."

Scott isn't unique: he's just more open. Much of fashion apes that fast-food mentality, ever decreasing the time between catwalk and sales rail. Across the board, its lead to the rise in importance of inter-season collections – dubbed Cruise and Pre-Fall – which are delivered earlier than the traditional biannual collections fashion houses present under the banners spring/summer and autumn/winter. For most, those make up 60-80 per cent of sales. Labels like Burberry offer fashion-hungry consumers the chance to order clothing direct from the catwalk show – it's not the immediate retail hit of Scott's Moschino (who has also offered a similar buy-it-now capsule after his subsequent two Moschino catwalk shows) but it satisfies a craving.

https://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article10180145.ece/alternates/w460/JeremyScott_rexfeatures.jpg
prom dresses under 100
Finally, the issue is thus: are we breeding a new generation that will be blighted with aesthetic obesity? Will designs available immediately become the norm, rather than the exception? It's possible for many more brands to offer the kind of immediacy Scott and Burberry give their product, by cutting corners and restricting evolution of ideas. But do we want to strangle that out of our clothing, in the name of getting it that little bit before everyone else? This fashion lives fast, and dies young. But I'm not sure it will be remembered.

MARC JACOBS

With his focus on capturing the transience of the pop culture moment and a love of elevating the everyday, Marc Jacobs is, arguably, the Andy Warhol of fashion. And, if Warhol painted his Coca-Cola bottles in 1962 as the perfect embodiment of democracy and an American Dream of equality, in 2013, Jacobs decided to pattern a sweatshirt with the brand's 'Arden Square' shaded red logo, bisected with a white 'wave'. Incidentally, the designer had also recently partnered with the soft-drink manufacturer on a limited-edition range of bottles patterned with his fashion designs. What a coincidence.

PRADA

For spring/summer 2011, Miuccia Prada took inspiration from uniforms and uniformity for her menswear collection. Quite naturally, that included fast food – jarring contrasts of primary colours in fine cotton poplin, worn with shlumpy chinos or under scrubs inspired by hospital garb. The shoes were the clearest ode: mashing together brogues, espadrilles and trainers into a single, triple-soled monstrosity, they resemble the Big Mac of footwear. And, of course, they became a bestseller.

JEREMY SCOTT

Throughout his career, Jeremy Scott has been obsessed with trash, and with the 'otherness' of American Culture. For one famous show in the early-Noughties, he restaged the US game show 'The Price Is Right', culminating in the designer hurling money emblazoned with his face into an eager crowd. Back in 2006, Scott called his collection 'Eat The Rich', using decorative motifs inspired by food to create his clothing. Sophisticated, it wasn't: imagine wafer cones as a brassiere, eclairs and profiteroles as necklaces and earrings, and reconfigured candy-wrapper prints splooshed across leggings and sweatshirts.

FashionTalking Skincare And Shopping With The Sisters Behind Chantecaille by kayleyons(op): 8:22am On Apr 16, 2015
We like skincare done the natural way, and we also like to celebrate sisters. That’s why we hung out with the adorable Chantecaille sisters—Alex and Olivia—for a little P&P: product and pressed juices. Foundation, foods they love and hate, and French fare…it’s all here.

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

Alex: Cottage cheese with honey and berries—so 1982 of me—but I recently discovered this at a place in Greenwich Village near me, and it’s delicious; I feel so virtuous eating it! I’m sure it’s a ton of calories, but think of all that calcium. Then French Press coffee with a dash of sugar. For lunch, zucchini soup, avocado toast with Maldon salt and a squeeze of lemon, a mâche or baby greens salad from the Union Square Market with lemon and great-quality olive oil with sliced radishes. A couple of tangerines or clementines as a snack. Pre-dinner—this of course means I’m on vacation or just live in France—Brebis cheese, a few slices of saucisson, green butter olives, and Lambrusco. For dinner, lightly cooked greens with tofu in a ginger/soy sauce and a glass of Chablis or a Negra Modelo.

Olivia: I like to begin the morning with English Breakfast tea with raw honey, then a fruit smoothie or Greek yogurt with fresh jam from Beth’s Farm and fresh fruit like papaya and berries. If I don’t have a lot of time, I love the smoothies from Siggy’s on Elizabeth Street. They have one with raw almond butter and fruit that is amazing. If I feel a lull mid-morning, I may grab a green juice from the Juice Press. Lunch in the winter has to be warm food for me. My favorite is the zucchini soup from Bottega Falai, a delicious Italian panini shop near my office on Lafayette Street. If my sister said the same thing, then you know we are related! With that, I love a mix of root vegetables and grains or a fresh salad with avocado and Parmesan. After, I could have a chai tea or a decaf latte with a piece of dark chocolate. For dinner, I prefer eating fresh, seasonal vegetables with grains or sustainable fish like black cod. I’m obsessed with butternut squash; I think my skin might turn orange. Finally, I’m not afraid of a little dessert. My favorite is a flourless chocolate cake with ice cream. It never fails to make me happy!

Alex: I try to sweat it out a few times a week, either with yoga, the elliptical and weights, or underwater in the pool. I get as much sleep as possible, and I constantly have a glass of water by my side. I think good thoughts; it sounds cheesy, but if you’re always stressed and unhappy it shows on your face. Plus people around you can feel it, and a cranky person is not very beautiful.

Olivia: I try to begin my day with a glass of water with lemon to alkalize my system. I’m not a chia seed and flax kind of girl, probably because I’m too French. I love to eat fresh fruit and vegetables and drink coconut water and aloe water. My favorite coconut water is Nirvana; it tastes clean and fresh and it’s made of all-natural ingredients. Also, I take a lot of vitamins, especially antioxidants and vitamin D, and fortunately I prefer water to wine. I try to drink a lot of water. I just got an incredible water purifier, Aquaovo, so I can avoid plastic bottles and harmful phthalates.

How does your beauty routine differ from your sister’s?

Alex: She doesn’t drink! And I eat steak. She also shuns all sun, whereas I love it but wear a lot of SPF and hats.

Olivia: We have different skin, so we use different products. I love our Future Skin gel foundation, and she uses our Just Skin tinted moisturizer. At night, I am busy putting my baby to bed and finishing e-mails, so I cut corners and end up using sleep-in face masks. It’s wonderful; I wake up looking like magic elves gave me a facial while I was sleeping. My sister takes a bath with her mask on.

A beauty tip you’ve taken from your sister that you now love…

Alex: Wash your face in the morning, too. Of course, I always wash it at night, but never thought this was necessary first thing. Now I feel like I’m extra clean in the morning and ready to absorb the skincare that much better.

Olivia: Believe it or not, my sister actually taught me how to tweeze my eyebrows. I am blessed with thick brows, but they definitely needed some grooming when I was a teen. Alex was quick to the rescue! She’s an expert brow shaper.

Do you cook together? What do you like to cook?

Alex: Not often, unless we’re making something for her daughter, Delphina, together—but I’d like to more. We used to bake a lot as kids, especially on rainy summer weekends. I cook for myself (and my dog!) at home in New York. I make a bowl for her and a plate for me! A lot of freshly seared chicken—the trick is to add a healthy pat of butter to the oil to get a great seared crust—with sautéed greens (like spinach) and carrots or zucchini with a touch of water and butter, and a whole grain like a quinoa or brown rice. We’re French. Our secret weapon is butter!

Olivia: We have fun cooking together when we are at the beach at my parents’ home. We all gather in the kitchen with music, the dog, and my baby, and everyone contributes. It feels like more of a party than a chore. We typically cook fish in the oven with local vegetables such as zucchini, butternut squash, and carrots. My mother can also make the most amazing cheese soufflé. She whips it up in no time and it has the perfect golden top. I still need to master that recipe!

Food your sister hated as a kid that you loved…

Alex: The truth is, she is always right. I fought it for a while, but I too dislike red and green peppers! Tough when you’re force-fed ratatouille as a child in a French household. I eat burgers, and she won’t touch them. This affords a special bond between her husband and me, who can discuss the finer points of medium to medium rare, cheese variety, and the pure pleasure derived from a mayonnaise/ketchup/Dijon mélange…

Olivia: Pretty much anything, as my sister went through a phase of only eating bread and butter sandwiches, which had my parents very worried. I thought it was funny. But of course it passed and now she has a very varied palate.

Where do you travel for inspiration, and what won’t you travel without?

Alex: I love wherever I can be outdoors, to hike, swim, surf, and scuba ideally. So that can be Bali or Big Sur. I am actually kind of obsessed with the Pacific Northwest/Northern California. I find our Rosewater and Lip Potion are no longer luxuries but essentials. And a bathing suit—you never know if there’s a great pool in your hotel!

Olivia: I want to go everywhere as long as I can sleep in a comfortable bed at the end of the day. I get ideas for new products and colors from anywhere and everywhere. I sound more adventurous than I really am. I love warm, tropical places at heart, from the Maldives to St. Barts, where I got married. If I didn’t dislike flying so much I would be traveling all of the time. I love studying how people live in different cities, from Rome to Hong Kong. I can’t travel without my Magnolia, Jasmine and Lily Healing Emulsion, which keeps my skin hydrated and balanced; my Pure Rosewater, which I spray constantly; a cashmere wrap from Brunello Cucinelli; and a good probiotic to help my system adapt to different countries.

How do you divide and conquer in terms of work?

Alex: It’s simple. Olivia (along with our mom) makes it and I sell it. That’s a bit simplistic, but that is basically the division of our roles. I head up sales and they’re the creative part of the team.

Olivia: I create the products with my mother and oversee public relations, social media, and advertising. My sister oversees all the domestic sales and promotions. We work together but never step on each other’s toes. It’s fun and a great balance. I truly feel blessed to work with my family every day.

How are your personal styles different? How are they similar?

Alex: I think they’re different when we take risks. I will try lots of different styles; I literally can have a different look going every day of the week whereas Olivia has a work uniform—leggings, boots, a silk shirt, and a thick cardigan (for winter). I also have massive fails, and Olivia seems to never teeter. She must have a better mirror than me at home! We’re both rather classic and like good jewelry—although Olivia’s jewelry collection is on a considerably different level than mine (she’s married after all!). We both appreciate gorgeous but non-flashy pieces.

Olivia: My sister is more creative with her outfits and plays with color more than I do. She is a bit more adventurous and tries new trends. Now that I have a baby, I don’t have as much time to play in my closet. I have a uniform that works for me to look pulled together for work and then allows me to get down on the ground at the end of the day to play with my daughter. In the winter, I love leather leggings with Derek Lam blouses, Brunello Cucinelli sweaters, and Gianvito Rossi boots. During the summer, I live in Giambattista Valli, Peter Pilotto, and Stella McCartney dresses paired with Lanvin flats. I think our styles meld when we go on a beach vacation. We both love colorful bikinis and fun, bright beach dresses and sarongs. I love Eres for bikinis, and beach dresses from Thakoon and Poupette in St. Barts.

Advice to women applying makeup in the morning…

Alex: Wear some—you can’t wear none! But not so much. That’s easy to follow, right?! Finding your correct foundation shade is one of perhaps the biggest challenges, but if you get it right it will set you free in the sense that your foundation will be (practically) imperceptible and you will just look like a better, smoother, and less-red version of yourself. Bronzer cannot replace blush. Blush is meant to represent natural blood flow (think pinching your cheeks to bring a healthy flush to your face). You can live without sun, but you can’t live without blood. So don’t skip the blush and only apply bronzer—it will look odd and unnatural.

Olivia: The most important thing is good lighting, that way you can see the true color of your skin and makeup. You want it to match perfectly so that it disappears. It’s very important that it’s all blended in—no streaks along the jawline. If you wear eye makeup, then I suggest putting on your foundation afterward, in case any powder drops onto your face. I like to begin the day with light makeup and then I can add more during the day if needed. If I’m going out at night, I will apply mascara and a bolder lip.

What are you favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?

Alex: I constantly keep a list of restaurants I must go to throughout the world—especially in the U.S., as I travel a lot for work.

In San Francisco, Zuni Café is a classic for the healthy food movement, and I love the Embarcadero Farmer’s Market. There is a great little place called Bio, run by this beautiful Tunisian woman who makes the best vegan food, crepes, homemade kombucha, and pressed watermelon juice. I am always hoping she’ll open an outpost in NYC!

In Austin, Uchi has insane sushi. Skip the BBQ in this city.

In Paris, I really like the chill cafés in the Marais. There is nothing greater than a chèvre chaud salad in Paris and Chinese food— it’s somehow better there. I don’t love fancy restaurants in Paris; I think because the basic food is just so good and reminds me of how my aunts and grandmothers cook.

I’m dying to go to Nashville for Jonathan Waxman’s Adele’s and Rolf and Daughters.

In Charleston, I love FIG, The Ordinary, and Husk. You could roll out of Charleston easily. I once organized a girls’ weekend there purely based on food I wanted to eat!

And I would do a 24-hour trip to L.A. just to go to Alma downtown.

In Seattle, The Walrus and the Carpenter and How to Cook a Wolf. These are also beautifully designed restaurants. I wish I could work in one of these just to be able to spend more time in their setting. Seattle’s peaches are insane in the summer. I bring them home fresh from local farmers’ markets on the plane with me.

And Vancouver for the oysters, fresh produce, and fish at Yew.

Olivia: My favorite city for food is Sydney, Australia. It’s everything I love. The food is fresh, creatively prepared, and healthy. They focus on sustainable seafood, which is very important to me. A few wonderful spots are Catalina Rose Bay, Boathouse Balmoral, and Nomad. Also a great breakfast spot in Bondi is Porch and Parlour.

What are you coveting right now?

Alex: I’m thinking about oysters and butter right now! I’m really into beautiful and functional bottle openers…I just got my dad a brass one from Fort Standard that I wish was mine. I also found a great gold one from Umbra Shift that reminds me of a Robert Lee Morris cuff. And I am desperate for a humongous banana tree for my apartment. I want to live in a jungle. I’m also really into Stella McCartney lingerie. It’s amazingly well made, super-chic, and sexy. It’s true what they say about wearing good underpinnings: They keep you well pinned!

Olivia: A quick romantic getaway with my husband is on my list. We would love a beach getaway or somewhere sunny. Hermitage Bay in Antigua or Amangiri in southern Utah would be dream escapes. But honestly a night at The Mark would be heaven as well!

I love jewelry. I love to discover new brands or jewelry stores. I love bracelets and rings because they are easy to put on when I’m running out the door, but a great necklace can dress up any outfit and brighten my face. A few of my favorite places to look at jewelry are Barneys, Ted Muehling, De Vera, and Broken English.

One item you’d like to steal from your sister’s wardrobe…

Alex: Just one? Her party dresses. She has a wildly beautiful and girly collection of Valentino lace dresses and Alaïa cutout dresses that give you the best shape! Those—I want those in the will.

Olivia: My sister has some beautiful, delicate earrings that I could happily wear! Don’t tell her…

In the same vein as what is the new black in fashion, what’s “the new potato” in beauty?

Alex: Naturals, but that’s not new for Chantecaille. It’s what we’ve based our company on: Formulas with the highest concentration of botanicals and naturals. Customers want to know what they’re putting on their face—just like they want to know what they’re cleaning their house and body with and what they’re eating. I think our bodies crave natural aromas and ingredients. We respond better to them, and they’re easier to absorb. Much like food!

Olivia: For us, it’s plant stem cells. Our line is based on the power of plants and science to treat the skin in the most potent and safe way possible. Plant stem cells work the most harmoniously with our own cells; they can work on a deep cellular level, creating true change without causing any irritation. It’s very exciting to see what we can achieve today compared to when I first started in the business.

FashionPink Hits Back At Weight Critics by kayleyons(op): 7:50am On Apr 14, 2015
Pink has told people not to be "concerned" about her figure.

Pink has slammed her weight critics by insisting she feels "beautiful" in her "voluptuous" body.

The 35-year-old singer and her husband Carey Hart attended the John Wayne 2015 Odyssey Ball in Beverly Hills on Saturday, where she wore a striking black dress with a daringly low neckline.

While she clearly oozed confidence on the red carpet, it didn't stop internet trolls from sending hateful messages regarding her weight.

Luckily Pink has taken the mean comments in her stride and took to Twitter to share a long response to her critics.

"I can see that some of you are concerned about me from your comments about my weight. You're referring to the pictures of me from last night's cancer benefit that I attended to support my dead friend Dr. Maggie DiNome. She was given the Duke Award for her tireless efforts and stellar contributions to the eradication of cancer," the star wrote, adding that her weight seems to have become more important to people than the cause of the event.

"While I admit that the dress didn't photograph as well as it did in my kitchen, I will also admit that I felt very pretty. In fact, I feel beautiful. So, my good and concerned peoples, please don't worry about my. I'm not worried about me. And I'm not worried about you eithersmiley...I am perfectly fine, perfectly happy, and my healthy, voluptuous and crazy strong body is having some much deserved time off. Thanks for your concern. Love, cheesecake. (sic)"

Luckily Pink and Carey had plenty of fun at the event. To accompany a cute black and white photo of them from the event, in which they're sat at their table beaming at the camera, Pink joked about Carey's outlook.

"and my hubby says "it's just more to love baby" (and then I smack his hand off my booty cause we're in a supermarket) (sic)" she wrote.

Pink added that she's "happy" in her own skin, along with sharing a sweet comment made by her daughter Willow, who asked why her mother is so "squishy".

FashionStyle: Try The Square Scarf Trend by kayleyons(op): 8:06am On Apr 08, 2015
Yet neck ties and square scarves have become the most sought after accessory of the spring/summer 2015 season.

It may be a nod to the 1970's fashion seen on nearly every catwalk in the last year.

Whatever the reason, delicate neckwear has never been so stylish.

At Gucci, the fashion house's famous prints were tied under denim military jackets, or worn in the style of a retro air steward's uniform.

Meanwhile, at Saint Laurent each model sashayed down the runway wearing a long strip of printed chiffon.

Even Tommy Hilfiger got in on the act by dressing models in a long thin scarf draped across the decollage.

Luckily the trend has filtered through to the high street and we're now seeing lots of choice when it comes to scarves.

It is also worth investing in a high quality silk scarf. Try young Scottish designer Karen Mabon for a scarf you'll wear forever.

This pond scene scarf has just the right amount of fun about it.

For a classic take on the trend, head to high street giant Topshop for a well-priced Paisley print neckerchief.

To channel French style wear with Breton stripes, like the model pictured here, or wear with a grey or white Tshirt to jazz up a plain outfit.

Supermarket brand F&F continues to showcase a fantastic range.

This seaside-inspired scarf is just £8 and is a fun way to get on board with this trend.

Another store to try when shopping this look is Oliver Bonas, in Byres Road. Their selection of scarves is wide-ranging and you're sure to find a design that catches your eye.

The scribble heart scarf, pictured in our line-up here, will add a stylish edge to any outfit.

If you're looking for something grown-up with a vintage look about it, head to up-market high street store Jaeger.

They have an extensive selection of silk scarves at the higher end of the price range.

We love their colour palettes, including this orange, pink and black one, as well as the London print scarf.

Don't forget to try French online firm La Redoute, which is stocking this unusual green coloured piece, which is bound to brighten up your accessories wardrobe.

If the high street isn't for you then head to Glasgow's wide range of charity shops to find one-off scarves.

Vintage boutiques including Mr Ben's and The City Retro, both in the Saltmarket, also have a wide selection of unusual prints.

Tie your scarf round your neck, wear it loose - or even try tying it round your wrist or handbag. The most important thing is to have fun with this classic trend.

FashionLee Daniels Watches 'empire' – And Talks Back To The Screen by kayleyons(op): 7:49am On Apr 02, 2015
Lee Daniels was in his Midtown Manhattan loft on a recent Wednesday night, doing what millions of other people were doing at the same time: getting ready to watch an episode of his breakout hit television show, “Empire.”

“Oh, God,” he said as its lead-in on Fox, “American Idol,” finished up. “It’s on. Come on, family.”

Mr. Daniels’s boyfriend, Jahil Fisher, 33, and his 19-year-old daughter, Clara, walked over from the kitchen area. Nearby, buried in a hammock lined with fox fur, was Clara’s twin brother, Liam.

“Get up,” Mr. Daniels commanded. “Say hello.”

The teenager mumbled a greeting. People have a habit of doing what they’re told when the person giving the orders is Mr. Daniels, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker and co-creator of “Empire.” To quote Courtney Love, a guest star on the show, “Letting him down is not an option.”

Mr. Daniels made his name with his 2009 film, “Precious,” based on a best-selling novel about an overweight teenage girl who contracts H.I.V. from her father, who is raping her. Made on a budget of about $10 million, it generated nearly $64 million at the box office and scored six Oscar nominations, winning two.

After the release of his next movie, “The Paperboy,” which earned mixed reviews and not much money, Mr. Daniels returned with another hit, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” a 2013 film loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, a black man who served under eight presidents.

Then came “Empire,” which has confirmed Mr. Daniels’s status as a major creative force. The show debuted in January to an audience of about 10 million and finished its season, on March 18, with 16.7 million watching the final episode as it aired.

Wearing a wool V-neck sweater from Zara, Tom Ford slacks and no shoes, Mr. Daniels described the show as a “black ‘Dynasty.’ ” He created it with Danny Strong, the co-screenwriter of “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and the final two “Hunger Games” films.

Mr. Daniels is not a constant presence on the set of “Empire,” and it seemed he has some issues with not having the same control of every little thing that he is used to as a filmmaker. “I’m in charge, but I’m not directing,” is how he put it.

Still, the show is a clear reflection of Mr. Daniels, a walking, talking exclamation point of a man, with a sensibility so over the top that sometimes even he marvels at it.

“I’m such a queen,” he said.

He is also a throwback to an era before celebrities had the personality sucked out of them by their handlers.

“Empire” centers on Lucious Lyon, a hip-hop magnate who has just been found to have Lou Gehrig’s disease, and his leopard-print-clad former wife, Cookie, who has recently been sprung from prison.

While watching the episode, which was projected onto a living room wall, Mr. Daniels seemed content — until the appearance of a woman in a minor role. “She’s a bad actress,” he said.

He also thought that a physical confrontation between Cookie and her son Hakeem was hackneyed. “She already beat him with a broom,” he said.

And when one of the characters entered an ornate church with stained glass windows, he nearly lost it. “Whose idea was this?” he boomed. “Who is black and Catholic?”

“Charlie Rangel,” replied Mr. Daniels’s publicist, Ken Sunshine, who was seated on a nearby sofa, apparently to keep Mr. Daniels from behaving so much like Mr. Daniels while in the presence of a reporter. (Points for trying.)

As the opening credits for “Empire” appeared on screen, about 15 minutes in, his mood lightened. “There’s my name!” he said.

He also seemed to enjoy live-tweeting his reactions to the episode. Or more accurately, dictating tweets to his assistant, Kaycee Devoe, and his daughter, who tapped away at the keyboard of his MacBook.

One tweet was a shout-out to Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie: “cookies weave… TO DIE in this episode.” Another slighted a costume choice for the character Jamal Lyon, who is played by Jussie Smollett: “no more hats jamal! not cute.”

Occasionally, other people in the room chimed in. When Lucious, who is played by Terrence Howard, shows up to a White Party much like the one given annually by Sean Combs, Mr. Fisher, the boyfriend, suggested his costume was not up to snuff. “It’s like they’re at a wedding in Atlanta,” he said.

“You shady bitch,” Mr. Daniels said back to him.

Once the episode was over, Mr. Daniels flipped over to CNN in time to see an interview he had recently taped with the anchor Don Lemon.

Asked what he thought of the fact that there were so few black people nominated for Oscars this year, Mr. Daniels told Mr. Lemon: “I felt like: ‘Why are we all here presenting? Why are we all there to serve you if we can’t eat the food?’ ”

He also spoke out against the situation in Ferguson, Mo., adding that there was nothing surprising to him about police brutality anywhere. “I’m still pulled over. … We were nominated for two Oscars for ‘Monster’s Ball,’ and I almost didn’t make the Oscars because I got pulled over in Beverly Hills,” said Mr. Daniels, whose father was a police officer killed one night when Mr. Daniels was 15.

While watching the CNN segment, Mr. Daniels actually seemed a little upset that the edited cut focused largely on his comments about race relations, rather than what he had said about his hit series. “I don’t want to have this black conversation,” he said. “It bores me. It honestly bores me.”

He perked up when his iPhone buzzed with a call from the television host Gayle King. “The show is so damn good,” she said, her voice coming through the iPhone speaker. “It just seems to grow and grow. It’s the only one I watch in real time.”

A little more than a week later, Mr. Daniels and Mr. Fisher were on their way to the Tribeca Grand Hotel for the Cinema Society’s unofficial premiere of Disney’s “Cinderella.”

Mr. Daniels wore a black cashmere Vivienne Westwood coat with piping down the sleeves, a black Gucci V-neck sweater, black Tom Ford slacks and black Lanvin sneakers with red shoelaces (untied). “My kids are grown, and this queen wants to see ‘Cinderella,’ ” he said, glancing at Mr. Fisher and shaking his head.

In the downstairs auditorium, the couple took their seats with Gabourey Sidibe, who made her acting debut as the lead in “Precious” and now plays a put-upon record-label assistant on “Empire.”

Within minutes of Mr. Daniels’s arrival, it seemed that three-quarters of those in attendance had approached him to effectively kiss the ring, among them Harvey Keitel, the celebrity stylist June Ambrose and the actresses Gina Gershon and Debi Mazar.

“I’m addicted, to your show,” Ms. Mazar said. “It’s like crack. I want to be Cookie’s lover.” (As yet, no lesbian subplot exists for Ms. Henson’s character.)

Cuba Gooding Jr., who appeared in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” approached as well. “If one more person mistakes me for Terrence Howard,” he said with a smile, “I’m going to punch them.”

The movie began. Mr. Daniels turned to Ms. Sidibe. “How many calories do you think are in popcorn?” he asked.

“About zero,” she said.

He left his seat and soon returned, carrying a small bucket of popcorn.

As Cate Blanchett appeared on screen in the role of the wicked stepmother, wearing a floor-length gown, Mr. Daniels said, “Cate is bringing fashion.”

He continued with the running commentary as the movie went on. Here he was, noting the arrival of the first black man on screen, who was playing one of the prince’s subjects: “We got one!”

And he welcomed the sight of Helena Bonham Carter in another role: “Miss Fairy Godmother is everything.” During the scene of the ball, with numerous young women parading in front of the prince, Mr. Daniels said, “It’s like ‘The Bachelor.’ ”

When the lights went up, well-wishers (including the actor Michael Shannon and the reality TV star Bethenny Frankel) once again swarmed Mr. Daniels.

Mr. Fisher and Ms. Sidibe headed off to dinner without Mr. Daniels; he had to get through a script draft for his next project, a biographic film about Richard Pryor for the Weinstein Company.

“I feel like Cinderella, going home now to write,” he said.

FashionBrittany Snow's Starstruck Toes by kayleyons(op): 7:49am On Mar 31, 2015
Brittany Snow has assured fans that wearing white and clear-strapped sandals isn't easy to pull off.

Brittany Snow has joked her toes had a "fangirl moment" last night.

The actress attended the iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles, where she wore a gorgeous white dress by Yigal Azrouël and sandals with clear and white straps.

In some pictures it made her toes look like they'd escaped from her shoes but luckily she made light of the style blunder by explaining they just got a bit too excited by fellow stars Iggy Azalea and Meghan Trainor.

"You guys try wearing white & CLEAR strapped shoes with Iggy & Meghan on either side of you. My toes and I had a fangirl moment...who cares! (sic)," she posted on Twitter.

Brittany oozed confidence yesterday, looking particularly stunning with her side-plaited hair and slick of red lipstick. While it might look like it comes easy to her, she hasn't always been so happy in her own skin.

"It's always a process, but getting older I've become more confident. I had really bad skin as a teenager, I have very, very dry skin so to hydrate my skin I used a lot of lotions and products and oils, and then I would break out really badly," she recently confessed to Yahoo Beauty.

"So it was always a mission to try to figure out what worked for me, and that took getting older and also realising what to eat and what supplements to take and vitamins. I am a big believer in all of that now, too, and it makes me feel better, inside and out."

That includes staying away from mangos and almonds, which cause outbreaks for her, and taking a lot of Vitamin C.

FashionJulia Louis-dreyfus Talks 'pro-aging' And The One Beauty Mistake No Older Woman by kayleyons(op): 7:57am On Mar 27, 2015
At 54, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is looking better than ever, and we think it may have something to do with her unique approach to aging.

“I hate that word [anti-aging]! It should be something positive, like pro-aging," the actress told NewBeauty Magazine in a recent interview she did as their spring cover girl.

Louis-Dreyfus thanks her genes for her ageless looks, though her mother's welcoming approach towards aging was a bit more accepting than her own. "I won’t let it go to seed. I want to stand up to it. I think it’s great I’m in my 50s and still going," she said.

Indeed, the actress and mother-of-two has her hands full between filming "Veep" and appearing as the new face of Old Navy. She said the 17-hour days on set can take a toll, what with the lack of sleep and difficulty staying on track with nutrition. But she says she manages to stay in shape with the help of healthy snacks and some sort of cardio at least once a week. "Besides hiking, I like spin classes ... I think it’s so important and anyone feels better after they do it," she said.

Louis-Dreyfus also opened up about the importance of skin care and shared some of the tricks and tips she's learned along the way, including drinking plenty of water, wearing sunscreen and washing off your makeup every single night. And she had an important word of warning for older women everywhere: "Less really is more -- especially when it comes to makeup. I’ve found that a huge mistake you can easily make that ages you instantly is putting on too heavy foundation. All it does is define the lines you have."

Though she's taking her "pro-aging" efforts seriously, she's said in the past she doesn't plan to go under the knife. Although she's considered it, her husband Brad Hall is against it. "I like that he likes me as I am -- that's important to me," she said in a 2013 interview with Health Magazine.

We're happy to hear it. We also love you just the way you are, JLD.

FashionHow To Make Hair Removal Wax At Home by kayleyons(op): 7:29am On Mar 23, 2015
There are times when you can't find the time to visit the salon to get your waxing done. When that happens, it's better to get waxed at home instead of shaving.

Step 1

Take a saucepan and heat some sugar in it. Keep stirring until it starts melting. Let the sugar caramelise.

Step 2

Mix in a few drops of honey and lemon into the mixture. Keep stirring until the mixture becomes really hot.

While stirring, you need to make sure that the wax has good consistency .

Step 3

If you think that the mixture is too thick, add a little water to it and keep mixing.

Step 4

Once the mixture is ready , take it off the stove and keep it at room temperature for about an hour and allow it to cool down.

Step 5

Once the wax has been cooled, take a tin container and refrigerate it.

Benefits of using homemade wax

- Compared to the ones that are available in the market, a homemade wax has several benefits. Here are a few.

- Since the wax is made using natural ingredients, it makes your skin soft and glow.

- You are not likely to develop any skin rash or infections by using homemade wax.

- It will remove the hair as well as will also moisturise your skin.

- Homemade wax lessens the production of hair, so the next time you wax, you will realise that the hair growth has considerably reduced.

- It will exfoliate your skin and also open the pores of your skin to allow the dirt to get out.

How to take care of your skin after waxing

- Always apply a moisturiser after you are done waxing.

- You can also wet the skin us ing a damp cloth so that it stays nourished and does not dry out immediately .

- Avoid going out in the sun too much after waxing. In case you have to, always wear a sunscreen.

- Avoid taking warm or hot wa ter showers after you've waxed. This will strip you off the essential oils.

- Before you go to bed at night, apply a nourishing lotion on the area so that your skin stays moisturised.

- If the area starts itching or turns red, apply talcum pow der to reduce it.

- You can also try applying a cube of ice on the affected area to reduce the redness.

FashionDolce&gabbana Say Comments About Family Not Meant To Judge by kayleyons(op): 8:44am On Mar 16, 2015
Fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana drew applause for sending a pregnant model down the runway as part of their tribute to mothers, but their endorsement of traditional families in a recent interview unleashed harsh criticism and calls to boycott their label.

The designers, under growing social media pressure, issued a statement Sunday saying their comments in an interview with Italian magazine Panorama supporting traditional families with a mother and a father weren't intended to judge the choices made by others.

Elton John added his voice to the call to boycott the designers' Dolce&Gabbana label, expressing offense at their skepticism about the use of in vitro fertilization and surrogate mothers to create families. The musician's two children were conceived by in vitro fertilization.

Singer Ricky Martin, the father of twins born by a surrogate mother, called on the pair to "wake up" in a message on Twitter, admonishing the designers that their voices were too powerful to spread hate.

Gabbana said in a statement Sunday that "it was never our intention to judge other people's choices. We do believe in freedom and love."

Dolce says he was expressing his view about family based on his experience growing up in a traditional Sicilian family "made up of a mother, a father and children. I am very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I've known."

Dolce said he was expressing his personal views "without judging other people's choices."

The designers, who are gay and formerly were a couple, have put the traditional family at the center of their last two collections, sending a pregnant model and models with their own children down the runway to celebrate motherhood for next winter's womenswear collection, while featuring grandmothers with their grandsons for menswear.

FashionUnusual Cosmetic Surgeries On The Rise by kayleyons(op): 7:50am On Mar 12, 2015
Most people, who go under the knife, opt for shapelier noses, slimmer waists or bigger breasts.

But with celebrities going in for butt implants and belly button surgeries, there has been a surge in unusual plastic surgeries. We take a look at some of the most unconventional ones.

Thigh gap treatment

Singer Beyonce sparked off the infamous thigh gap, after which, a growing number of women have started to opt for thigh gap surgery. A simple-one hour procedure, this is a new form of liposuction that helps address loose skin in the inner and outer thighs, and removes excess fat to enhance contours.

Six pack implants

emerald green bridesmaid dresses

Also known as abdominal implants, this body contouring surgery is for men who want washboard abs, without having to follow a rigorous gym routine. It is done by etching the skin in longitudinal lines and removing superficial fat from the body through a technique called lipo-sculpture.

Grin Lift

As you age, the laugh lines around your lips sag, making your mouth droop, giving the appearance of a frown. The grin lift, a 15-minute procedure, is a surgical way to restore the smile, without fatty injections. Small skin triangles are removed from above each corner of the mouth to cause it to lift, thus raising the lips into a slight smile.

Cinderella surgery

Women are requesting cosmetic surgeons to alter the shape and size of their feet to fit into designer stilettos. Termed the Cinderella surgery, it involves changing the length of the toes or removing unsightly bunions to make heels look better and more comfortable to wear. Some women also have fat inserted into the soles of their feet, to allow them to walk more comfortably in heels.

Eyebrow and eyelash transplants

The trend of sporting power brows took off years ago thanks to haute couture models on runways. But it has become a hot trend now because of celebrities like the Kardashian sisters and Megan Fox, who wear their eyebrows thick. Customers can design their ideal eyebrows using stencils. The painstaking and pricey treatment, originally developed for burn and dog-bite victims and later used to remedy baldness in men, is being increasingly used by women for vanity purposes. Along with eyebrows, women with sparse and scanty eyelashes are opting for eyelash transplants that will eventually help them grow real lashes. The process involves removing a section of hair from the patient, typically from the back of the head, and grafting the hair to the eyelids, replacing the existing eyelashes.

Chubby cheek reduction

Medically known as buccal fat removal, it offers a solution to those who want to reduce the size of their cheeks and get a chiselled look. In this procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision inside the cheek and removes a gumball-sized chunk of fat. This causes the cheek hollows to contour inward.

Vacation breasts

A plastic surgeon in New York has created a 24-hour 'insta breast' procedure — a new kind of saline injection that allows temporary breast enlargement for a day. These vacation breasts slowly deflate as the saline is absorbed into the body. The surgeon is now trying to come up with a version that will last up to two weeks.

FashionTowering Monoliths In Ballet At Paris Fashion Week by kayleyons(op): 8:10am On Mar 10, 2015
Normally the action at Paris fashion shows is provided by the models -- but at Kenzo's event Sunday, towering monoliths danced a technical ballet that literally overshadowed the collection on the catwalk.

Seven giant two-story-high blocks moved around on hidden wheels, apparently guided by computers, in a vast industrial hall in northwest Paris as the brand's collection paraded around them.

The idea was a forest -- but a technological one, befitting the 21st century and Kenzo's autumn collection featuring mostly dark colors offset with lateral or diagonal stripes and complex floral prints.

"We wanted the women to feel like they were dancing with these trees in this forest," said Humberto Leon, co-designer with Carol Lim.

"We wanted to give the season an interpretation that was ours. So we almost wanted to sum up this amazing imagery that the house owns and kind of show it in a way that we think is 2015," he said.

The overall impression of the collection was of ethnic modernity, a little bit masculine, with touches of Peruvian and Japanese traditional dress thrown in.

Ricci's informal elegance

Nina Ricci threw the focus of her show on Saturday squarely on the clothes: elegant but informal, sophisticated yet simple.

Designer Guillaume Henry offered almost transparent lace dresses, and knee-length skirts topped with t-shirts or easy flowing pants.

"Sophistication doesn't mean decoration," he told AFP after the show. "It's about handling fine materials in the same way as poorer ones, to get rid of the barrier between day and night (wear)."

For Mugler Saturday, sexiness was more the game, embodied by a collection leaning heavily on leather.

Georgian designer David Koma, who took up the creative reins at the house in late 2013, presented hide cut short and close to the body and in black, white and marine.

Patterns looking like computer circuitry highlighted the theme of "artificial intelligence", but some of the openings on the dresses revealing the skin suggested a more carnal undercurrent.

FashionWays To Protect Your Hair During Holi by kayleyons(op): 8:52am On Mar 07, 2015
Post the onset of spring, it's now time to welcome the beautiful festival of colours. Holi brings us plenty of fun and joy, but it also adversely affects and makes a complete mess of our mane.

It's during this annual amalgam of toxic colours and water that we have to be extra careful. Experts provide us with some handy tips as we all get ready to indulge in the hair care ritual for Holi.

1) Apply moisturising oils and hair masks

KissyDress prom dresses 2015

You may sport different hairstyles for this special occasion, but nourishing and protecting your tresses is your priority. Senior hair stylist Wendy D'silva says, "A dry scalp absorbs colour faster. So firstly, massage your hair with moisturising oils like coconut, olive, lavender, rosemary, castor or jojoba oil two hours before playing Holi. These oils will protect your hair from harmful chemicals and will remove the colours easily while washing the hair post Holi. Secondly and most importantly, tie up your hair. Braided hairstyles and pony tails more than help during this festival. Thirdly, use hair masks, which form a protective layer around the scalp and hair, and prevent colour from entering the pores and hair shafts. Try to use organic colours as colours with chemicals aggravate scalp-related issues."

2) Use scarves, shower caps et al

Your locks are one of your most important assets and the need of the hour is to shield them at any cost. Hair consultant Dr. Girish Shah explains, "You don't get pure gulaal nowadays. The toxic colours stick to the surface of the scalp and the hair strands, don't come off easily, and damage the keratin layer of your mane. This leads to wreckage and loss of hair, mild allergy and itching of scalp. Hence, use scarves, shower caps, decorative Holi caps or even swimming caps to protect your hair from getting spoiled."

Did you know?

Using a good leave-in conditioner or ideally, a combination of oil and leave-in conditioner is especially necessary for dyed hair, particularly for lighter shades, as they tend to absorb colour faster.

FashionDries Van Noten Chooses Independent Women For Paris Catwalk Playlist by kayleyons(op): 1:28pm On Mar 05, 2015
If anyone can make the lyrics to Destiny’s Child’s Independent Women seem cerebral, it might be Dries Van Noten. The song was on the soundtrack to the designer’s autumn/winter 2015 show on the first day of Paris fashion week.

It was spliced together with other party playlist tracks including Rude Boy by Rihanna, Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, Get Ur Freak On by Missy Elliott and and Blondie’s Rapture. The twist was that he used the acapella version for all these familiar floorfillers. This gave a sparse power to proceedings in the ornate hall of the Hotel de Ville.

Along with the sound of pop’s women throughout history, only the footsteps of models could be heard, although some of the front row – which included Jane Birkin and Kanye West – could not resist mouthing along to the words on Wednesday in the French capital.

Van Noten’s soundtrack is always a clue to the inspiration behind his collection. This season, with the homage to music’s independent women, the Belgian designer focused on “the kind of women I admire. They have guts, and wear the things that they want”.

https://i.guim.co.uk/media/w-620/h--/q-95/b13132d278f3b44042dc7bee6dca910301726eea/0_0_4096_2456/1000.jpg
prom dresses

He namechecked Birkin along with Isabella Blow and the late contributing editor to Italian Vogue, Anna Piaggi, describing them as “women in the past who were crazy about fashion, and had a nonchalance. I feel that is missing and I want to bring it back.”

The collection designed to do this would certainly appeal to icons of eclecticism, such as Piaggi, who could typically be seen sporting mismatched boots, blue hair, a pink fur stole and a miniature top hat.

Each look was piled high with ideas, vibrant colours and rich textures – starting with the opening outfit, which consisted of wide-legged khaki trousers, knee-length overcoat with goat hair collar, ruby red jacquard blouse and feathered organza neckpiece in chartreuse and violet.

With a long, voluminous silhouette dominating, those wide trousers continued and came printed with a supersized poppy pattern, while there were floor-length flared skirts, some in a quilted patchwork fabric and others in iridescent floral jacquard, teamed with transparent blouses.

If they sound like clothes only for true fashionistas, Van Noten’s strength is in translating these ideas to the real world. Pulled apart this was a happily commercial collection – the show notes even referenced a “grounded glamour”. While Piaggi (or Anna Dello Russo, arguably her successor, who sat in the audience here) would wear these clothes wholesale, as they are seen on the catwalk, shier and more retiring fashion editors were heard discussing which items they might buy to add a bit of eclectic spirit to a low-key wardrobe.

The embellished knits – some with gold beading, others with iridescent blue and green beading like the colours on beetles’ wings, or stripes of sparkly sequins – were high on the list, along with knee-length jacquard skirts in red and gold with a frill on the hip.

Van Noten said the richness in content and diverse mix of fabric came from collaborating with small mills. He said: “I got to play with things and see what we can do with fabrics. It was a joy for me to make this collection.”

His significant fanbase will no doubt enjoy wearing it. Van Noten has built up a brand that is sold in more than 400 stores worldwide, without advertising or, as is more common for luxury brands, a reliance on accessories.

With nearly 30 years in the fashion business, he has a cult following of fashion insiders as well consumers, who want pieces that will add something interesting to what they wear. Van Noten – with his artisanal take on luxury – can be relied on to provide that.
