DSS arrests protest leaders in Katsina

The Department of State Services (DSS) has detained the leaders of the nationwide protest against bad governance in Katsina State. Local reports indicate that Kabir Shehu Yandaki and Habibu Ruma, leaders of the “Struggle for Good Governance” protest, were summoned to the DSS office in Katsina and subsequently arrested. Mujittapha Usman, who led the protest in Malumfashi Local Government Area, was also taken into custody by security forces.

According to VANGUARD news, Friends of the detainees revealed to local media that the DSS contacted Yandaki and Ruma by phone, requesting their presence at the office to answer questions about the previous day’s protest. Upon their arrival at the DSS headquarters in Katsina, they were detained and have not been released.

Vanguard reported that the initially peaceful protest turned violent when a mob, including minors, took to the streets wielding sticks and leaves, chanting “Bamuyi Bamuyi” while destroying public facilities. The protesters burned a NSCDC patrol vehicle and set fire to the ruling All Progressive Congress office in Dutsinma LGA.

In response, the Katsina State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Dutsinma Local Government Area and a 7pm to 7am curfew on the remaining 34 LGAs.

The International Police Organisation (Interpol) has uncovered that hundreds of thousands of dollars are laundered out of Nigeria every hour. The Department of State Services on Thursday warned against the planned nationwide protest against hardship in the country.

The agency said on Thursday that it had already identified the sponsors of the planned protest and warned them not to proceed with it as it is not in Nigeria’s interest.

The warning is contained in a press statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunanya, and made available to Vanguard.

The security outfit warned that it had intelligence that the planned protest would be hijacked by hoodlums to cause chaos and extreme violence in the country.

The statement alleged that the goal of the planners is to cause regime change, especially at the centre.

Part of the statement reads: “The DSS has followed the discourse on planned protests in parts of the country in the coming weeks by persons and groups yet to identify themselves in the public as leaders of the plot. “While peaceful protest is a democratic right of citizens, the Service has confirmed a sinister plan by some elements to infiltrate the protest and use it to cause chaos and extreme violence in the land. Ahead of the planned nationwide protest over economic hardship in the country, the military has warned organisers of the protest against any form of violence.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday warned that the military won’t allow anarchy to befall Nigeria.

He hinted that organisers of the planned protest intend to replicate the recent protest-turn-anarchy demonstration in the East African country Kenya.

General Buba said although citizens have a right to ventilate their grievances, the military won’t condone any form of violent gatherings or protest.

He added that the military has uncovered plots by unscrupulous elements to hijack the protest and turn it into a violent one by attacking innocent Nigerians and their businesses.

“While citizens have the right to peaceful protest, they do not have the right to mobilise for anarchy and unleash terror.

“It is easy to see that the contemporary context of the planned protest is to shadow the outrage in Kenya which I must say is violent and remains unresolved,” he said.

“The level of violence being envisaged can only be described as a stage for anarchy.

“The Armed Forces on its part will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation. This is because we have seen wars and have witnessed anarchy in countries with which we have operated, particularly in times of ECOMOG (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group) and during our peacekeeping operations in various countries.

He said some people fantasise about war thinking that it is like seeing movies but can’t fathom the destructions that come with war.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, governors and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have appealed to Nigerians to shelve the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest slated for next month.

The protest against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, has been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August. The organisers of the protest have been faceless.

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation and economic crisis sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.
