The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) said yesterday that it had intercepted 40 by 40 feet containers laden with Tramadol and other dangerous pharmaceutical products worth over N7.3billion. A large number of the dangerous drugs, NCS said, were imported into the country by some scrupulous importers from India to endanger the health of the nation. Attempt by the importers to bribe Customs officers with over $400,000 (about N150million), to effect the release of just one container out of the 40 seized, it was gathered, was rebuffed by the officers. Addressing reporters at the Apapa command of the Service while displaying the dollars yesterday, its Comptroller-General, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), said NCS has also impounded two helicopters that can be used for nefarious activities. One of the helicopters with registration number SN-BLI, the Customs helmsman said, was intended for export, and was concealed in container number PONU7789246, while the second helicopter, a Cessna 182A, was imported into the country from the United States of America for unknown assignment. Ali said the first helicopter was falsely declared as 388 bags of cashew nuts, while the second was concealed in container number MRKU 4457663 before they were intercepted by some vigilant and patriotic officers of the command. Its importation, Ali said, violates Section 36 of the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA), Cap C45, LFN 2004 over failure to provide End-User-Certificate from the offices of the National Security Adviser and approval from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority. Investigation, the CGC said, was ongoing to fish out the owners of the two helicopters. He said three suspects with some Customs officers that were involved in the clearance of some of the containers laden with Tramadol drugs from the port have been arrested for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Buhari is a bastard |
President Muhammadu Buhari has denied statement credited to him making the rounds that many Nigerians are suffering from mental illness. The report had it that president Muhammadu Buhari in his address in the Paris Peace Forum, said 40 million Nigerians were mad. But, reacting, Femi Adesina the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity denied the statement saying ‘evil minds’ created the fake news. He urged Nigerians to beware of those spreading fake news, adding that they would go to any length to gain political advantage even if it’s with the mental health of Nigerians. Adesina on his verified Twitter page wrote: “Evil minds claim President Buhari says 40 million Nigerians are mad. Fake news. “They now play with the mental health of people to gain political advantage. Beware of them.” Source: http://dailypost.ng/2018/11/16/buhari-speaks-saying-40m-nigerians-mad/

var to be used in epl come next season Video assistant referees are set to be used in the Premier League next season, after clubs agreed in principle to the move, BBC reports. The Premier League will now make a formal request to the International Football Association Board and Fifa. VAR was used at the 2018 World Cup, is in operation in Italy and Germany's top divisions, and has been utilised in some FA Cup and Carabao Cup games. The Premier League has been carrying out "non-live" trials this season. VAR will also be used in the Champions League from next season. There have been growing calls for it to be introduced into the English top flight for several years. But in April Premier League clubs voted against it being used for the 2018-19 season. On Saturday, Southampton forward Charlie Austin called for a change after he was denied a goal for offside against Watford, a decision he called a "joke". Saints manager Mark Hughes added: "All the major sports have video reviews and for some reason the Premier League, which is watched all around the world, is still in the dark ages." VAR has been trialled regularly in a "non-live environment" in the Premier League this season, although match officials have not been contacted by those conducting the trials. Clubs were given an update at a meeting on Thursday. A statement from the Premier League said its testing programme would continue for the rest of the season "with a continued emphasis on those Saturday afternoons which have several matches being played concurrently". How VAR decisions are communicated to fans in the stadium will also be addressed. Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live's Afternoon Edition: "I think it is a good thing. I know a lot of people are against it but we've got to embrace it now and move forward. "We've seen this season a number of incidences that have been called wrong, especially this weekend when there were a number of goals ruled out when they shouldn't have been. "I think as long as we get the training and education right, and we get the right personnel, that's the most important thing for me. "The referees will still want to go out and get the key match decisions right, it's very important that referees are not hiding behind the VAR - they've still going to be making these big calls correctly." Super Eagles player, Odion Ighalo has been ruled out of the Nigeria vs South Africa AFCON qualification clash. Odion Ighalo, a Super Eagles striker, has been ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification game against South Africa, TheCable reports. Ighalo sustained a hamstring injury in Changchun Yatai’s game against Tianjin Quianjian on Wednesday. The five-goal hero in the two-legged AFCON qualification games against Libya in October was stretchered off the pitch in the 16th minute. Ighalo disclosed to TheCable that it’s a hamstring injury. “I pulled my hamstring,” Ighalo said. The extent of his hamstring will be determined after a scan which will be carried out later. The Super Eagles will take on the Bafana Bafana on November 17 in Johannesburg. It takes up to three weeks for a player to recover from a hamstring injury. |
