Gus Poyet has warned Sunderland to be wary of a
Manchester City backlash when the sides meet in
the Barclays Premier League.
The champions had the opportunity to close the gap
on the leaders Chelsea to one point heading into
the new year when they hosted Burnley on Sunday,
after Jose Mourinho's men had drawn 1-1 at
Southampton in an earlier kick-off. However,
Manuel Pellegrini's men surprisingly surrendered
a two-goal lead to draw 2-2, meaning Chelsea
remain three points clear at the summit.
The Sunderland head coach believes the setback
could stir City and is well aware that his team will
need to play to their maximum potential to leave
the Etihad Stadium with three points.
"Now they [City] have drawn and it's a little bit of
a wake-up call, so I don't know, we will see,"
Poyet said. "We know Manchester City, we know
how good they are, we know the quality they have
got. We need to make sure that we are good on the
day."
Poyet remains without full-backs Anthony
Reveillere (calf) and Patrick van Aanholt
(shoulder), while midfielder Liam Bridcutt is on
the sidelines after suffering a concussion in
Sunderland's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Sunday.
Midfielder Sebastian Larsson is expected to shake
off an ankle complaint in time to feature.
City may have slipped up against Burnley, but
before then had clocked up seven straight league
victories. One of those successes came against
Sunderland on 3 December, with Poyet admitting
his team could not cope with the quality of Sergio
Aguero, who scored twice in a 4-1 away win.
Poyet will not have that problem to contemplate
this time, though, as the Argentina striker is
sidelined with a knee injury. Captain Vincent
Kompany (hamstring), striker Edin Dzeko (calf)
and centre-back Matija Nastasic (muscular
injury) are also out for City, while midfielder
Fernando is suspended having clocked up five
yellow cards.
Pellegrini has enjoyed a 2014 that brought a
Premier League and League Cup double last season
and is hoping to start 2015 in the right fashion
against a Sunderland side they beat in the League
Cup final.
"In general it [2014] has been successful," he
said. "We have the next five months now to
continue to improve the way we play.
"I hope we start the new year winning three points.
Sunderland are a good team with a good manager.
They have strong players."

Arsene Wenger is wary of making too many
changes when Arsenal play their third Barclays
Premier League match in seven days at
Southampton.
Arsenal have enjoyed a productive festive period
so far, recording 2-1 victories at home to Queens
Park Rangers on Boxing Day and at West Ham
United two days later. Their New Year's Day match
at St Mary's Stadium represents their third fixture
in quick succession, and the Arsenal manager
concedes it is a difficult task to maintain their
winning momentum while giving players sufficient
rest.
"We have Southampton which is another game that
will demand a high intensity and commitment, so I
will have to look at how we recovered because we
gave a lot in the last two games in 48 hours," he
said. "It's down now to the quality of the recovery.
"Rotation is a sensitive subject because you can
destabilise your team with too much rotation. So you
have to find the right numbers for rotating the
team. Overall, you want to keep the balance of
your team and as well refresh sometimes in the
positions where players are a bit tired."
Tomas Rosicky made his first Barclays Premier
League start of the season against QPR before
being rested for the trip to the Boleyn Ground and
Wenger confirmed that the Czech midfielder would
return to the fray on Thursday. Wenger has a
fitness concern over Danny Welbeck, whom he felt
would be "short" for the game after sustaining a
thigh problem at West Ham.
Olivier Giroud is still suspended following his red
card against QPR so Alexis Sanchez could be in line
to fill the central striking role, while Aaron
Ramsey (hamstring), Mesut Ozil (knee), Mikel

Having confounded many pre-season predictions,
Southampton head into the clash fourth in the
table, above Arsenal on goal difference. Ronald
Koeman led his side to a spirited 1-1 draw with
league leaders Chelsea on Sunday, while the
south-coast club frustrated Arsenal for much of
the pair's meeting just four weeks ago at Emirates
Stadium, before the match was won late on by
Sanchez.
Despite the grit in those performances to go with
Southampton's abundance of creativity, Koeman
remains cautious.
"Maybe we can come and surprise people," he
said. "Arsenal are always one of the top clubs in
the Premier League because they have very good
players like Sanchez, who can win games.
"We don't have those sorts of players, we're more
about teamwork. The top four is not an obsession
because I don't like to watch every weekend the
table because it means nothing [until the end]."
Morgan Schneiderlin misses out through suspension,
while Nathaniel Clyne (ankle) is injured and
Emmanuel Mayuka has departed for the Africa
Cup of Nations.

Louis van Gaal has warned Manchester United to
heed lessons from their last encounter with Stoke
City when the sides meet on New Year’s Day.

United are halfway through Van Gaal's debut
season as manager and a nine-match unbeaten
run has helped them rise to third in the Barclays
Premier League table. One of United's recent
victories came against Stoke at Old Trafford at the
beginning of December, Marouane Fellaini and
Juan Mata scoring either side of Steven N'Zonzi's
equaliser. However, Van Gaal's men had to
withstand late pressure from Mark Hughes' side on
that occasion, with goalkeeper David de Gea pulling
off a string of impressive saves.
Van Gaal is confident that United can continue to
adapt to his methods as the Barclays Premier
League welcomes in 2015, but is wary of the
challenge Stoke will pose at the Britannia Stadium.

United have welcomed back the defensive trio of
Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Rafael Da Silva
back from injury over the Christmas period. Van
Gaal's options have been further boosted by the
return to training of Ander Herrera and Adnan
Januzaj from an ankle injury and illness
respectively, but they appear unlikely to feature
this week. Angel di Maria (pelvis) and Fellaini
(rib) are also expected to miss out once more, while

Stoke may have lost to United this month, but they

season's corresponding fixture in February, their
