venue : Emirates Stadium - London Referee: R. Madley Time : 6:30pm MATCH PREVIEW Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he is determined to enjoy another successful year in the FA Cup and has set his sights on defending the trophy the club won last May. The Gunners came back from two goals down against Sunday's opponent in last year's final, with Aaron Ramsey scoring an injury-time winner to end Arsenal's nine-year wait for silverware. "We want another cup run and we want to, if possible, keep the trophy. We have won it five times in my period in charge, so that means we know the importance that it has," said the Frenchman. "It is a great memory, but we have a big job to do on Sunday and after [more games in] the Premier League, then we have the Champions League. "What is for sure is that we have room for improvement and we have to manage to do that quickly." The Arsenal boss insisted he would not have left the club had they not beaten Hull at Wembley last year. "Walk away? No. I have just won my 600th game out of 1,000 - that means I have won 60% of the games and after 18 years, you would not be serious to walk away for losing one game," added the Frenchman. "I do my job as well as I can and I respect my contract. It [the suggestion he would leave] was because we didn't win a trophy for years and people want that." Hull boss Steve Bruce says he will "count up the numbers" before selecting his team. "There were a lot of tired bodies after the Everton game and it was our physical work-rate that was the difference in that game. We had energy about us that Everton struggled with," "Let's not forget that the FA Cup was magical for us last season. We couldn't have picked a much more difficult tie to start with this time - especially after playing three games in six days - and I will freshen the side up. "We'll see what we can do and hopefully we'll go there and give them a good game." team news England forward Theo Walcott is expected to start for Arsenal in their third round FA Cup tie against Hull. Goalkeeper David Ospina is set to replace Wojciech Szczesny in Sunday's clash at the Emirates, while Mesut Ozil is close to full fitness after injury. Hull boss Steve Bruce is likely to make changes with Tom Huddlestone and Stephen Quinn back after suspension. Andrew Robertson, Liam Rosenior and Gaston Ramirez will not feature after suffering injuries against Everton. |
Sergio Aguero is on course to make his Manchester City comeback against Arsenal. City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes his 19-goal top scorer ought to be fit for the clash with Arsene Wenger's side on Jan. 18. He also thinks that Edin Dzeko will alleviate City's striking injury crisis by returning sooner, for the trip to Everton on Jan. 10. The Bosnian has missed City's last five games after suffering a calf injury in the warm-up at Leicester, while Aguero suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 win over Everton earlier in December. Pellegrini has always been confident both forwards would be available for the clash with title rivals Chelsea on Jan. 31 and has now confirmed he expects them back sooner. "I hope in the next week Edin Dzeko will be fit and in the next week [after that] will be 'Kun' [Aguero]," he said in his news conference after Thursday's 3-2 win over Sunderland. In the absence of both Aguero and Dzeko, teenager Jose Angel Pozo led the line at Leicester before midfielder James Milner spent three games as an auxiliary striker. Then Stevan Jovetic, who had been out with a hamstring problem, started and scored against Sunderland. However, the Montenegrin said that he, too, prefers to operate in a deeper role, telling the Manchester Evening News: "It is not James' position, and it is also not mine. "I have played a couple of games as a lone striker, but I prefer to play with someone in front of me. But this is an emergency and I feel I did well and can do it again." Pellegrini also suggested Willy Caballero, who came in for Joe Hart against Sunderland, will keep his place for Sunday's FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday. The Argentine, who was a summer signing from Malaga, played back-to-back games in the Capital One Cup and the Premier League in September and Pellegrini hinted at a repeat. He added: "It is important when you play so many games -- not only for Joe but for other players -- to have an important rotation. I did the same before the Capital One Cup for Willy Caballero. So I think it's good for Willy, good for Joe and good for the team." |
Match Preview Chelsea will attempt to get back on track when welcoming Watford in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday. Jose Mourinho's team suffered their lowest point of the campaign by falling to a surprise second league defeat on Thursday. Tottenham were their conquerors, putting in a dominant display to earn a 5-3 triumph as Chelsea began 2015 in dreadful fashion. The result left Mourinho's side, considered as certainties by many for the Premier League title just a few weeks ago, level on points with champions Manchester City at the top of the table. The Portuguese will be determined to ensure that does not represent the start of a rut, even if he seems certain to significantly shuffle his pack having not made too many alterations during an extremely busy festive period. Chelsea have lifted the FA Cup seven times in thei history, with one of those triumphs coming under their current boss. Mourinho oversaw victory in 2006-07 during his first tenure with the club, Didier Drogba - who is also back at Chelsea having spent some time away - grabbing the only goal of the final in extra time to sink Manchester United. They were eliminated at the fifth-round stage last time out, losing 2-0 to a Manchester City side that knocked out Watford in the previous round. chelsea team news Goalkeeper Petr Cech is among those likely to come in, while star men Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are strong candidates to be rewarded with a rest as a full-strength squad provides Mourinho with ample opportunities to rotate. Blues manager Jose Mourinho will aim to balance fielding a side to advance with one which gives his players a rest after an arduous festive fixture schedule which culminated in Thursday's 5-3 defeat at Tottenham Watford team news Watford will have to make at least one change as midfielder Adlene Guedioura has returned to Crystal Palace at the end of his loan spell. Centre-back Sebastien Bassong, who missed Sunday's 4-2 Sky Bet Championship win at Cardiff due to a dead leg, is ineligible to feature under the terms of his loan deal from Norwich. Fellow defenders Joel Ekstrand (back) and Gabriel Tamas (cruciate) are still on the sidelines, but strikers Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra could return to the starting line-up. Among Watford’s current vintage, Hungary international midfielder Daniel Tozser is poised to make his FA Cup debut and insists his team-mates must take on their illustrious opponents without fear. |
The Reds captain will depart Anfield upon the expiration of his contract in the summer, thus bringing down the curtain on a trophy-laden 17 years on Merseyside Steven Gerrard has confirmed that he will leave Liverpool when his contract expires in June. The Reds captain, who made his debut in 1997, has been heavily linked with a move to the American MLS, specifically LA Galaxy. Gerrard was offered a new contract to stay at Anfield in December, with Brendan Rodgers expressing his hope that the 34-year-old would commit his future to the club, but he will instead look to finish his career away from the Premier League. "This is an era where 'legend' is vastly overused, but in his case it actually doesn't do him justice," Rodgers said in a statement following Gerrard's announcement. "As a leader and as a man, he is probably incomparable to anyone I have ever worked with." The star has become a Liverpool legend since making his bow as a 20-year-old, captaining the club to Champions League glory in 2005, and he has also won two FA Cups, two League Cups, one UEFA Cup and two UEFA Super Cups. The one prize that has eluded him remains the Premier League. But, despite his bulging trophy cabinet, Gerrard has had to cope with a withdrawn role this season, with Rodgers often opting to bench the veteran in favour of rotating his options. One such occasion came in the Champions League clash with Real Madrid, leading to reports that Gerrard was considering his future. In total, he has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring seven goals. |

match facts Newcastle United have scored the highest proportion of second-half goals in the Barclays Premier League (76%) this term. Newcastle scored two goals from three shots on target in their 2-1 win over Chelsea at St James' Park in December. Chelsea have scored with 18% of their shots and hit the target with 50%. Both are league-high figures. Newcastle have scored more goals from substitutes than any other team in the top flight (eight), including Papiss Cisse's double in their victory over Chelsea last month MATCH PREVIEW Newcastle United caretaker boss John Carver says he is going to enjoy the challenge of facing Jose Mourinho's Chelsea when the two sides meet at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Carver has been given the interim role following the departure of Alan Pardew, who was confirmed as the new Crystal Palace manager last weekend, and has made no secret of his desire to coach his hometown club on a permanent basis. Newcastle's 2-1 win over Chelsea at St James' Park last month made it three consecutive home league successes against the title challengers but it is different story on their travels to west London. The Tyneside club have earned one league victory at Stamford Bridge since 1986 but Carver is undaunted by the task of improving that record. "We're going up against one of the best sides - and best manager - in Europe, if not the world," said Carver. "We've got a good record against Chelsea and we have to use that to our advantage this weekend. It'll be great standing in the technical area next to him. I'm going to take it in my stride and I'm going to enjoy it, but I want to win." Chelsea have stuttered in the BPL in recent weeks, with a draw at Southampton and a 5-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur leaving them with an identical record to second-placed Manchester City. Mourinho's side now top the table by virtue of alphabetical order, but, after a 3-0 FA Cup win over Championship side Watford, striker Loic Remy - who spent last year on loan at Newcastle from QPR - insists spirits are high. "The mood is really positive and we're still focused on all of our targets. During the season every team will be in trouble at certain times," he said. "For us I hope it's behind us now with the last two league games. The players are still happy. Against Watford we deserved the win and we showed we can react. "We're still top of the league, we've qualified for the next round in the FA Cup so there is no reason to be negative. It's going to be hard but we want to win every competition, that's why the mentality and quality of the squad can make the difference." Chelsea have no injury concerns heading into the fixture. Newcastle could be set to welcome first- choice goalkeeper Tim Krul - out since November with an ankle problem - back into the starting XI after playing in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Thursday. Krul's deputy Rob Elliot (thigh) is still out, along with Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Mehdi Abeid (toe), Ryan Taylor (knee), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Siem de Jong and Gabriel Obertan (both thigh). Sammy Ameobi has a knee complaint, while Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse are both away on Africa Cup of Nations duty. It remains to be seen whether Fabricio Coloccini (buttock), Daryl Janmaat (groin) and Jack Colback and Moussa Sissoko (both hamstring) will be fit after missing the defeat to Leicester City.
