Webmasters / Yahoo Official And Unofficial Address Book Hack by kehers(m): 3:59pm On Jul 14, 2008
I was reviewing a way to import addresses from Yahoo address book as utilized by many social network sites of late. It turned out to be not as easy as I thought but somehow, I found my way around it. For developers hoping for similar solution, I have decided to put up something about it here: http://blog.ngbot.com/articles/57/
Webmasters / Re: Webdesign Softwares by kehers(m): 4:33pm On Jun 24, 2008
Come whatever, knowing the basic HTML codes is still the best way to web design. Really I dont believe HTML is that hard to be seen as something that shouldnt be embrassed by beginners. In the long run, you will need it, even if you are going the DW, frontpage way, knowing HTML still saves u a heck of headache,
I used Notepad as a beginner but now, it is EditPlus. EditPlus has a lotta interesting features that rocks for develpment. Undoing to the start, syntax coloring, file auto backup, line numbering, regexp searching to mention just a few.
Webmasters / Re: A Word Is Enough For A Wise by kehers(m): 4:30pm On Jun 24, 2008
The one thumb rule is never to over rely on a host. Be always ready to move at any Jack Robinson. And the way to it is to be sure if things go wrong, you are safe and can pitch ur tenth somewhere else as fast as possible. For one, backup as often as necessary and two, it is adviceable to have your domian name registered elsewhere and let ur hosting company handle just the hosting alone so that if things go wrong, you an easily get ur files elsewhere and change the name server of ur domian name to the new one.
Generally, and with some bad experience, I dont that trust Nigerian hosting companies. Pardon my "unpatriotism" but the fact is that the infrastructure in the country today cant afford a Nigerian hosting company giving the best of service (even if he wants to) - take electricity for one. I only use Nigerian hosting companies I know are resellers to a company elsewhere and that is if it is a very small job,

From a glimpse i can guess d site was designed with a WYSIWYG app. Hey as webmasters, we need to leave dos realms - i mean realms of frontpage and co. Using a WYSIWYG app will only give u d same old look and add exra junks to ur code, it's a world of web 2.0 and we need to embrace it.
Phones / Re: Sms Gateway, Please by kehers(m): 4:44pm On Jun 07, 2008
Clickatell rocks. They offer many features most other gateways dont e.g MMS, Wappush. And they have a good documentation and support. The one challenge wit them however is that 'names' with which u send your message must be registered with them due to scam reasons. Whatever, its worth a look.
Webmasters / Re: Do You Use Javascript Libraries? by kehers(m): 4:38pm On Jun 07, 2008
I've omced or more reviewed all the listed libraries including others like Google's GWT, mooTools and extJs. While it may be well argued that YUI has a good documentation, I think there is more to libraries than that. I will actually rate scriptaculous higher coz of its simplicity, mooTools for effects and then extJs for its capabilites. Some of their drawbacks however include GWT's dependency on external non-web based standards, mooTools for its incomatibility wit prototypeJs and YUI/ExtJs for size.
Liking my things simple, I use prototypeJs (jQuery in rare instance). prototypeJs has a good documentation and everything is kept simple in the one page script. However it is not a whole library on its own like the YUI and co that has effect, autocomplete, etc modules. It is simply a cross browser prototype (as name implies) for javascript programmers to build on - meaning it only helps making your scrtipting easier than doing things from scratch. It's not like Im a coding freak but the my issue with most of these libs are the extra junk of unneeded codes they add up. And for another, I like toying with things my own way so if the challenge is one I can tackle easily, I'd simply get my butt down and do the coding myself (on prototypeJs)
On a last note, ajaxian is a great resource for js prototypes, libraries, scripts and co,
Webmasters / Re: What Would You Want From A Nigerian Web Hosting Company? by kehers(m): 5:03pm On Jun 06, 2008
Value and reliability.
By value I mean something affordable and ok, I actually host on a foreign company dat gives about 1500GB space, 10 times dat bandwidth and jaw breaking other features for just $100/annum (say 13000k/annum). While Im not saying you should give away such at dat meagre price, giving enough space at cheap prices rocks.
And talking reliability, I mean server uptime closing up to 100% and 24/7 support.
Webmasters / Re: Why Not Create Web Services And Web Apps? by kehers(m): 4:51pm On Jun 06, 2008
There is actually more to designing a web service/app than we seem to think of. Beyond the necessary coding skills [server side - (php, asp, aspx nd co), database (mysql, oracle, ), standards (xhtml, css, js, ajax, rss, xml, atom, , )] there is a lot more. From experience, this is just the beginning. The other things to consider ranges from publicity (getting users) to payment integration, maintening the site (which is the biggest) and a lot others. The atmosphere around here is a bit hard on startups and dats why dos who seem to have the idea, skill and will shy away.
On a lighter note, here is inviting everyone to the proposed online Nigeria mobile community ngBot mobile @ http://mobile.ngbot.com
