Siena: I would get a second opinion on the engine.

I have never seen pistons work loose in an engine, even if it's covered a zillion miles. When he says "loose", does he mean the rings are worn, allowing oil to seep past? Does the engine smoke? Is it noisy, as in rattly? What did it go into the workshop for in the first place?

As for the gearbox, what does it having been worked on in the past have to do with today? I'm just worried your mechanic's trying to lead you up the garden path.
