In today’s digital world, social media is no longer just a place for connecting with friends or sharing life updates. It has become a business, a career, and a cash machine for many. With monetisation tools on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, people now earn money based on views, likes, and engagement. But here’s the catch—some are trading their dignity and future for short-term profit.

Every day, we scroll past videos that are crude, misleading, or shockingly inappropriate. Some are made in the name of “just entertainment.” Others are deliberately extreme to spark reactions. But have we stopped to think about what this does—not just to the viewers—but to the creators themselves?

Reputation Is Hard to Build, Easy to Break

Take the case of Kevin Hart. In 2019, the comedian lost the chance to host the Oscars because of old tweets from nearly a decade before—tweets he thought were just jokes at the time. Despite his success, those posts cost him a major opportunity. The internet doesn’t forget.

Or consider Courtney Stodden, who became famous at 16 for marrying a 51-year-old actor. Years later, she spoke about the long-term emotional damage and public shaming that followed. Many of her earlier posts and appearances were brushed off as “entertainment,” but they haunted her career and mental health for years.

Even ordinary people aren’t spared. In 2021, a teenage girl lost a college scholarship because of a TikTok video where she used a racial slur. It was meant as a joke. It became her biggest regret.

Who’s Really Consuming the Content?

Creators often say, “It’s just for fun,” or “I’m not hurting anyone.” But think again. Social media has a global reach. Kids, impressionable teens, and vulnerable adults are all watching. When you put out harmful content—be it offensive language, staged violence, or misleading information—it can reinforce stereotypes, normalize toxicity, or trigger real-life harm.

A 2022 study by the Pew Research Center found that over 60% of teens said they feel pressure to look “cool” online, and many admitted to copying trends even when they felt uncomfortable doing so. Why? Because what they see online becomes their standard.

Ask Yourself This

Before you post that next video, ask:
• Will I be proud of this in five years?
• Could this harm my job, my relationships, or my self-worth?
• What message am I sending to people who look up to me?

Social media can build you up—or tear you down. It’s not a dumping ground for reckless thoughts or desperate trends. It’s a reflection of you, your values, and the legacy you’re creating—whether you’re famous or not.
