Senator Hope Uzodinma of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been arrested for thumb- printing ballot papers at a private residence during the gubernatorial election rerun in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State. Arrested alongside Mr. Uzodinma were his uncle and elder sister. However, while his uncle and sister were detained, Mr. Uzodimma was released on personal recognition. A top police source involved in providing security in the area told PREMIUM TIMES that soon after his release, Mr. Uzodinma’s supporters in the area set bonfires on the road to prevent the police from taking his relations away. The police had to call for reinforcement from the army and officials of the secret police, the State Security Service before the bonfires and hoodlums were cleared and his relations carted away to be detained in the state capital, Owerri. Meanwhile, the rerun election in the local government was almost marred by pockets of violence and irregularities. At Oru East Local Government Area, which has majority of the Polling Units where rerun election were held, some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were caught thumb- printing ballot papers in favour of one of the political parties. Also arrested were fake INEC officials who posed as Returning Officers at the collation centre. The Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mike Igini, who was among the INEC team deployed for the election, said the INEC officials were arrested at Umumma primary school Ward 10 Polling Unit 008, Polling Unit 003 and three others. “Myself accompanied by the Assistant Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police have arrested poll officials in Oru East involved in mass thumb-printing and are now taken to owerri. “Upon my suspicion, an imposter, who claimed to be lNEC staff without proof, acting as a presiding officer, l ordered his arrest and it was effected by the Police”. At Ozuh-Omuma, an agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bernars Nwaokoro, was shot by thugs and the ballot box of his unit hijacked. Also, one Rex Anunobi was kidnapped from his home but was rescued by a team of Policemen led by one of the visiting Assistant Inspector Generals of Police to the state.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/182070-imo-election-senator-hope-uzodinma-of-pdp-relatives-arrested-for-fraud.html |

The Ondo Government has banned the production and consumption of locally- made gin, commonly called `ogogoro` in the state. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Akinyanju, announced this at a news conference in Akure on Saturday. The commissioner attributed the ban to the outbreak of an unknown disease two weeks ago in Irele Local Government Area of the state. “Our clinical analysis reveals the fact that there were no known viruses, while toxicology reports have confirmed our prime suspicion of methanol poisoning. “We have reviewed our strategies and embarked on sensitisation to let people know that locally-made gin is prohibited. “We will also embark on searches because this batch of methanol-containing gin must have gone round because 4 cases: 2 alive and 2 dead have been found in Odigbo Local Government Area,“ he said. Akinyanju said that stakeholders such as religious leaders, transporters, youths, market women, and the relevant association would be informed of the development. He said, “We will start with the entire South Senatorial District, then move to the Central Senatorial District. According to the commissioner, the unknown disease has so far claimed 23 lives with ten other people receiving treatment. “Two of them have regained their sights and are back home. “We appeal to the general public to desist from drinking the gin until we are able to identify the source of contamination or find out how the methanol got into the drinks,“ he said. The commissioner said that the state government was working closely with the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control and the National Orientation Agency to sensitise members of the public to the dangers of consuming such drinks. 20 out of the 125 mass marriages contracted and sponsored by the Sokoto State government in January, 2014, had collapsed, an official has disclosed. Alhaji Aliyu Kofar-Rini, the Chairman of the state’s Sunnah Marriage Mediation Council, the organiser of the marriage, disclosed this in Sokoto on Saturday while commenting on the current state of the marriages. He told news men that the state government had in January, 2014 spent over N 30 million in sponsoring the mass marriages of 125 couples. “The state government paid the dowries and provided all the wedding cloths and materials for both the 125 grooms and 125 brides. “Out of these marriages, 20 had since collapsed leading to divorces, sequel to mainly unemployment and other problems such as incompatibility of the couples,’’ he added. Kofar-Rini also said that the council was now working round the clock to ensure that the remaining 105 mass marriages were saved from failure. The chairman also said that the council had concluded arrangements for the conduct of the second phase of such marriages among 250 couples.(NAN)http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/20-out-of-125-mass-mariages-collapse-in-sokoto-official |
